Siempre bruja, also titled Always a Witch in English, is a Colombian Netflix series based on the novel Yo, bruja by Isidora Chacón.

Carmen Eguiluz (Angely Gaviria) is a 19 year old slave who is romantically involved with her slave master's son, Cristóbal. When they are caught, she is accused of witchcraft, and when Cristóbal objects, his father shoots him. While she is imprisoned and awaiting execution by burning at the stake, the wizard Aldemar teaches her an incantation and offers her a deal: if she travels to 2019 to deliver a stone to a woman named Ninibe, she can then travel back in time and save Cristóbal.

Siempre bruja contains examples of:

  • Big Bad: Throughout Season 1, the Fire Killer who turns women into ashes is the Big Bad. Lucien is presumed to be the Fire Killer. However, Aldemar is the real Fire Killer.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: Carmen almost instantly adapts to modern technology, clothing, and university. Her life is also much improved by the end of slavery and by women's rights.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Johnny Ki takes Carmen's powers away in an attempt to help her hide from Lucien. Carmen later takes Lucien's powers to defeat him. Aldemar takes her powers to trap her.
  • Burn the Witch!: Carmen is being burned at the stake when she uses magic to travel to the future. She arrives in 2019 with burns on her feet.
  • Equivalent Exchange: For everything that magic gives, it takes something away. Especially when a witch attempts to open the secret chapter in the Book of Shadows.
  • Fantastic Drug: An elixir that Carmen makes functions as a stimulant. Daniel and León sell it on campus.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Johnny Ki becomes this in the first season finale when he travels to the past.
  • Love Cannot Overcome: Despite being in love, Cristóbal cannot adapt to 2019 and chooses to return home to the past.
  • Portal to the Past: The stone that Aldemar asks Carmen to deliver is used to activate the portal.
  • Powers via Possession: When Amanda is possessed by the spirit of a witch, she gains the powers of a lineage witch.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Alicia discovers that she and Kobo have been together in many past lives. Tragically, it always ends in Kobo's death.
  • Survivor Guilt: Johnny Ki has this because he was the driver in the boat accident that killed his parents.
  • Sympathetic Slave Owner: Cristóbal, Carmen's love interest in the first season.
  • The Ghost: Alicia's brother and Daniel's boyfriend, Juanjo.
  • This Is My Boomstick: Johnny Ki impresses people of the past with his smartphone and flashlight.
