Tropes for the series:

  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Except for the pilot, every episode is similar to the series title, such as "Not a Tiger Yet'', "Not Out of High School Yet", "Not Dating Yet", etc.
  • I See Dead People: Nell starts seeing dead people after being assigned to writing their obituaries, where she gets unlikely life advice.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine:
  • One-Word Title: Pilot.
  • The Show of the Books: Based on Alexandra Potter's Confessions of a Forty-Something Fuck Up.
  • Social Media Before Reason: Piper, Nell’s assignment in “Not Out of High School Yet”, died taking a selfie in front of a cliff. She managed to post it while falling.
  • Special Guest: Usually playing the ghosts of Nell's obituary assignments.
    • Martin Mull as Monty, who is the first ghost that Nell has to deal with and the husband of bartender Cricket.
    • Brittany Snow as Piper, a former schoolmate of Nell's who fell off a cliff trying to take a selfie.
    • Wendie Malick as Mary Sue Manners, an advice columnist.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Lexi is always trying to get the approval of her father Duncan. She went so far as to stage a fake awards ceremony in the hope that he’d thank her in his acceptance speech. He doesn’t.
  • Wham Line: At the end of "Not the End Yet", Nell finds Duncan in the break room, looking around the newspaper office before he sells it. Then Dennis comes in and informs Nell that Duncan has been taken to the hospital, meaning the Duncan in the room is his ghost.
  • Wham Shot: In “Not Dating Yet”, Nell meets a man named Jesse and they spend all night having fun. When the sun rises, Nell takes a picture of the two of them together. She looks at the photo and Jesse isn’t in it — he’s another ghost.
  • Whodunnit to Me?: In "Not Solved Yet", Nell's latest ghost thinks he was murdered, so with the help of Lexi, a fan of true crime podcasts, she tries to solve it. Turns out he wasn't killed, he just had a bad reaction to his medicine and stumbled down the stairs.
