"It's all about perspective."
The show's tagline

#blackAF is a Mockumentary series on Netflix that premiered in April 17, 2020. The series stars Kenya Barris (the creator of the series) as a fictionalized version of himself and Rashida Jones as his wife, Joya Barris.

The series follows Kenya and his family trying to get by as a black rich family and dealing with issues pertaining to them. Like his other series black•ish, the series was based on his own experiences growing up.

The series was initially renewed for a second season, but that plan was scrapped, with the possibility of the show being reformatted into a film series.

The series contains examples of:

  • Age-Inappropriate Dress: This was discussed in episode 3, via Drea's explanation of "adultification", and also where Joya walks in on Izzy and her friends dressing inappropriately.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: The kids see Pops as one, especially in the Season 1 finale, where he gets shot down constantly by Izzy and Cam.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Izzy, though she's 12. She states that she doesn't want to get involved with her family and the mockumentary they're filming.
  • The Dreaded: Izzy is implied to be one, as stated from the many scenes from the characters. They even say she is scary. One example of this is how Izzy stares down her sibling to watch television, and she gets the remote.
  • Dysfunctional Family: The Barris family. They even admitted it themselves many times and is a story arc in Season 1.
  • Living Prop: Kenya and Joya's youngest son, Brooklyn. He doesn't get to do much other than just provide the typical "He says or does something that kids shouldn't".
  • Only Sane Man: Kenya tries to paint himself as one, but is sometimes proven wrong. This is especially true with how he feels about his coworkers in episode 5.
  • Parents as People: Kenya and Joya. This is a major plot point in the series, where Kenya tries to figure out where he stands in the world and issues surrounding his community and Joya tries to figure out her children, her life standing and her marriage with Kenya.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The show uses the song Win by Jay Rock.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: How Kenya feels about some of the people he hangs around with.
  • Vacation Episode: The last two episodes involve the Barris family going to Fiji and the issues with the Barris family ensue.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Inverted with Chloe and Kenya. Chloe is a more laid back and a person who likes to have fun, while Kenya is more serious about his work and is often critical of certain things.
