References to the popular Romantic painting Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.

Comic Books

Films — Live Action

  • The Count of Monte Cristo (2024): The first poster with Edmond Dantès/the count (Pierre Niney) looking at the sea from a rocky sea shore invokes the painting.
  • Crimson Peak: While making the film, the costume designer reportedly told Tom Hiddleston that they planned to base his character's wardrobe around this painting. Hiddleston complained that he was getting a little tired of playing characters modeled on the Wanderer.
  • Dune: Part One: In one of the scenes on Caladan, Paul is dressed in a dark coat and overlooking the planet's waters as one of his family's ships rises out of it. His back is to the viewer, giving an Art Imitates Art impression.
  • I'm Thinking of Ending Things: The painting is discussed by Jake and his girlfriend.

Live-Action TV

  • In Lost Girl, the image symbolizing The Wanderer is a minimalist version of the painting with sunbursts added at the top right.
  • In the Sherlock episode "The Hounds of Baskerville", Sherlock Holmes climbs onto a Dartmoor mound to survey the landscape, his hair, and dark coat billowing in the wind, in a visual reference to the painting.

Music

  • The album "The Confessor" (1985) has the painting as the back cover art. The front cover is another Friedrich painting, Two Men Contemplating the Moon.
  • The Wolves in the Throne Room song "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog" references the painting.

Radio

  • The original art for the 25th album of Adventures in Odyssey, "Darkness Before Dawn", bears a notable resemblance to the painting, with Regis Blackgaard standing with his back to the viewer looking at Whit's End, even holding his cane in his right hand.

Video Games

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's cover art strongly evokes the painting, with Link (an amnesiac "wanderer") standing on a cliff and contemplating the foggy scenery below him.
  • A cropped and heavily pixelated version of the painting appears in Minecraft.
  • The Sexy Brutale contains numerous shout-outs to famous artwork. In Eleanor's Painting Room, there's a parody where the wanderer has a noose around his neck.

Web Comics

  • Aurora (2019): The cover for Arc 2 chapter 1, "Ripples" recreates the painting with Erin Ruunaer as the subject.
