  • Jack of the Red Hearts: When Jack asks if Glory is good at math, her mother says, "Glory's no Rain Man. No genius savant upside."
  • Molly (1999): When a doctor at Molly's institution says she has "minor savant-like talents," Buck says, "I know, she recites stuff verbatim, she's Dustin Hoffman. But the fact is she's pretty much nonfunctional."
  • In Silent Fall, a cop says, "I saw Rain Man, Jake. That little boy has got a picture of the guy all locked up in his tiny little brain. I have an eyewitness. The only problem is he's not talking."
  • In Keep the Change (2017), David grumbles to Sarah, "What are you, Rain Man or something? I mean, you have to have a system for everything."
  • In Tropic Thunder, after Tugg Speedman's disastrous Oscar Bait film where he plays a mentally challenged farmhand, Kirk Lazarus discusses this movie along with Forrest Gump and Being There as examples of not going "full retard" to win an award. (On the other hand, as he states, Sean Penn in i am sam went "full retard", and did not win.)
  • In Jimmie (2008), Jan asks Kathy of Jimmie, "He's not a Rain Man kind of guy, is he?" Kathy shakes her head and says, "Fortunately not."
  • If You Could Say It in Words: When Nelson demonstrates his knowledge of etymology, Mark says, "He's Rain Man. Let's play some cards."
  • In Meadowland, Adam's foster father tells Sarah, "He's a sweet kid, but if you're looking for Rain Man, or like a math genius, or a classical fucking pianist, you're out of luck."
  • In Ming and Ming, Daming asks his autistic cousin Xiaoming, "Have you seen the movie Rain Man? Tom Cruise is in it. I figured you hadn't seen it. I heard that some of you autis- some people like you are geniuses. Is that true?" He gives Xiaoming some complicated math problems, which Xiaoming solves correctly in a few seconds.

Literature

  • Drea from Harmonic Feedback has Asperger's and watched Rain Man in the hopes of seeing a character like her, but she found that she couldn't relate to Raymond at all.
  • In Shtum, Rachel asks Ben if Jonah has "something he's amazing at." This annoys Ben, who knows the question is asked only by people who think Dustin Hoffman is a textbook representation.
  • In Eye Contact, one of Adam's teachers asks, "Shouldn't he be good at this stuff?" thinking of Rain Man. Cara answers, "He's not. Autistic kids are all very different, and math is Adam's weakest subject."
  • The Roosevelt: In Carry the Ocean, David says to some frat boys who were harassing him, Emmet, and Jeremey, "Go ahead. Wow them with your Rainman joke." Emmet says, "I'm Train Man."
  • In No One Needed to Know, Heidi's Autistic brother Donald calls out to her when she's on a date with Kirk. Not wanting to admit she knows Donald, she says, "Maybe he's like that guy from that movie Rain Man - seems really dumb but certain things stick to his head like names and dates."

Live-Action TV

  • The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: In "A Decent Proposal" after a devastated Will reverts back to (pretending to) being helpless in a wheelchair when Lisa turns down his marriage proposal, Geoffrey then states "Come along, Rain Man!" as he shoves his chair into the kitchen for breakfast.
  • In The Good Doctor pilot, Dr. Glassman tells the board of directors, "Shaun isn't Rain Man. He's high-functioning. He can live on his own and manage his own affairs."
  • In the original I Love the 80s special from 1988, the panelists discuss the film, particularly citing how while Charlie truly does love his brother, he nonetheless kept the money he manipulated Raymond into swindling out of the casinos.
  • The Surreal Life: In one of the far less humorous examples, when the participants of season five are playing a charity bowling game against some special-needs adults, Janice Dickinson yells out as one of the adults is about to bowl, "Hey, Rain Man!", angering the opposing team and thoroughly disgusting her own.

Western Animation

  • Runt from the "Rita and Runt" segments on Animaniacs is based on Raymond.
  • The Critic:
    • One of the films reviewed by Jay is a Rain Man send-up called Snow Man which ends with him melting during a trip to Las Vegas.
    • Another episode has another parody that's a mixture of the film as well as Interview With The Vampire and Bram Stoker's Dracula where Raymond is a vampire, he states that his favorite show is The Munsters and he attempts to fly and crashes into a wall.
    • Another episode has Jay and his son Marty buying matching suits to cheer the latter up and coming down an escalator like in the film, only for two identically dressed clowns to go up the adjacent escalator at the same time, unintentionally embarrassing them.
    • Another one has Duke displaying to Jay how the latter recycles his jokes and has him expressing via a split screen how Rain Man, A Few Good Men, and The Firm are all terrible Tom Cruise films that showcase his limited acting range.
  • Eek! The Cat: Eek once had to help an octopus with a Rain Man voice find his way home.
  • One episode of Family Guy has news reporter Tom Tucker conducting an "interview" with Dustin Hoffman that consists only of poorly-edited together clips of him from The Graduate, Rain Man and Hook.
  • The Simpsons: Raymond makes an appearance in "$pringfield", which coincidentally takes place in a casino and he is seen at Blackjack dealer Homer's table.
  • Sewer Urchin from The Tick is also inspired by Raymond.
