Ichiiro: Our motto is "Do one good deed a day". Even if it's a small thing, anything you think is good counts...

Summary

After school, Kaho eagerly congratulates Risa -her best friend- on having officially become a couple with Izumi, a guys he's been crushing on for sometime now. Risa is glad that Kaho has been so supportive and claims it's because of her that she worked up the courage to confess. Kaho remains pleasantly humbled as Risa reminds her of how much effort she went through just to help her; like asking other students information about him, helping her cheer for him during games, and helping her meet him. However, because they are dating she will be going home with him from now on, and she apologizes to Kaho. While she is disappointed, Kaho claims it was expected and how it isn't a big deal to avoid making her feel badly.

Taking off, Kaho decides that because Risa will be busier now she should look for something to kill time. Joining a club would be a good start; so she looks around when one happens to catch her attention: the Do-Gooders Club.

While wondering what kind of club it is, she attempts to peek through the door when someone catches her and opens it. Kaho is intimidated until the girl warmly brings her inside under the assumption that she wishes to join them, and she calms down as the three members welcome her with open arms. As she tries to explain that she only came to look, they explain how it is their duty to do kind things for others. Not only does it help make things better, but it allows them to earn a sense of self-fulfillment. Ichiiro -the club president- brings up how they were going to visit the Soccer Club today in order to do some cleaning, and with nobody better to do, Kaho accepts her offer to join them.

Arriving to the small, filth-covered room, the Teacher in charge of the team apologetically explains how they haven't had a club president for a while now, so the room doesn't get the proper attention it should. With everyone pushing themselves to their limits, it hasn't been a priority. Kaho remains in disbelief as she gets to work with the others, and in a few hours they finish. The members join them and express amazement as they admire the cleaned room and thank the girls. They are followed by two girls who have come to ask if they have seen her missing bus card and eagerly thanks the Do-Gooders club after they reveal having found it earlier. The other girl also thanks them, explaining how the meditation they taught her has helped to keep her calm and focused, and she's no longer bullied thanks to their help. Both girls would like to give them something as thanks, but Ichiiro claims it isn't necessary- they can't ignore someone in need.

As this exchange is going on, Kaho is surprised realizing how much this club actually does for others. She continues to think about as they head outside to be surrounded by other students and even the Principal and teaching staff, who shower them with praise and admiration. She is earnestly stunned by this, but comes to conclude that this club might just be for her after all.

The following day after class, Kaho is approached by admiring classmates who heard she was with the Do-Gooders club. She confirms this and is excited by all of the attention, but when she sees how depressed Risa looks, she asks if she is feeling okay. Risa claims it isn't important though, and she runs off after saying Izumi will be waiting for her. Sadly, Kaho comes to the realization that perhaps Risa really doesn't need her for anything anymore since this isn't like her, and she remains concerned as she heads to the club room.

For today the club will be heading to the north block to clean the restroom. Another club keeps dirtying it up and nobody wants to use an unsanitary restroom, so it's up to them to make it usable again. However, Ichiiro and the others quickly realize something is off with Kaho as she works and ask her about it. She hesitates until they convince her that they would like to help her, and she explains her problem before suddenly getting an idea. Since they helped her get this off of her shoulders, maybe they can do the same for Risa!

After they finish Kaho makes her way to the gymnasium to find Risa patiently waiting for Izumi to finish practice. She attempts to tell her that should she need a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen, she's welcome to visit the Do-Gooders club to discuss a problem she might have. But Risa refuses, saying it would be uncomfortable speaking about personal matters to people she doesn't know ,then she runs off to meet up with Izumi again.

By now Kaho is getting frustrated to be ignored by her supposed friend. She storms outside and complains, wondering why she continues to reject her attempts at helping her. She is momentarily distracted by an announcement over the system, saying that as school is closing, everyone should be making their way home now. Resigning herself to the fact that Risa may be a lost cause, she prepares to leave until a noise nearby catches her attention. She follows it, curiously wondering who would still be there and peeks through the door- only to find two of the Do-Gooders trashing the soccer room!

Kaho is horrified by this and she quickly hides, wondering why they would do this when they just spent a few hours cleaning it the day before. She takes off, deciding to tell Ichiiro what she saw the next day.

However, when she goes to anxiously inform her of what she witnessed, she is shocked when Ichiiro happily remarks on how she's glad hearing this. She had intended on asking Kaho to take care of the room next week anyway, so now that she knows it shouldn't be a problem. Bewildered, Kaho can only listen to Ichiiro as she explains that the members of Soccer club will be happy to have such a clean room next week again; only to pause and ask Kaho why she seems so alarmed. Seeing the others join them with items they recently lifted and the money they used to pay another student, an enraged Kaho calls them out on resorting to such things. Ichiiro refuses to acknowledge her concerns though, stating that by giving people what they want, they provide them with happiness. If Kaho feels happy when she does good it's fine, and from now and forever, they will continue doing this.

As Kaho thinks back about everything that recently went on, she runs out of the room in order to find a teacher to report what happened. She has to tell someone the truth; at least until she overhears Izumi and Risa speaking nearby. Curious, she stops to listen until Izumi takes off, leaving a devastated Risa to stand alone. Kaho quickly approaches her to ask what happened, and Risa bursts into tears before revealing they broke up. Izumi wants to get into a good high school and focus on basketball, and because he didn't want to have to split the time and only give half of the effort to it or her, he decided he had to choose what was best for his future. But she loved him more than anything- she didn't want to break up.

As Risa continues to cry, Kaho sadly confesses that she had been worried something like this would happen. She didn't want to say anything though, to make it sure she didn't curse their relationship. She attempts to comfort Risa, but seeing the pain she is in causes her to feel worse.

But she isn't like those other people...

Kaho continues to comfort her distressed friend, who pleads her help in feeling better. As she thinks about things recently, she is alarmed upon realizing that for some, strange reason, she feels happy. She can't understand as Ichiiro's words play over in her mind. She had been very happy from all of the attention she got from everyone, and she wonders if maybe she actually isn't very different from them after all...

A while later Izumi stands at a street signal with his friends. He admits that he didn't want to break up with Risa when they begin to scold him for being cruel like that, but he claims that while he feels terrible and loves her, he has to focus on basketball and didn't have enough time for them both.

As they continue to talk, neither male notice a figure approach them from behind. Before they can react, the figure pushes Izumi into the way of an oncoming car.

The following day word quickly travels regarding Izumi's horrible accident. He'll be okay in due time, but the basketball recommendation he worked so hard for was canceled, and he probably won't be playing anymore.

With Risa, Kaho happily listens to her as she explains getting back together with Izumi. After the accident, they reconciled and he requested that she be his support during recovery. She embraces Kaho and thanks her for being so supportive, voicing how happy she is to have someone like her for a friend. Kaho eagerly insists that she could never leaving a trouble friend in need though, and she is shown to be observed by the members of the Do-Gooders club. Kaho then goes on to reveal that she has become an official member.

Tropes:

  • Beauty Is Bad: Ichiiro is a light example of the trope. She is very pretty and kind, and because of her friendliness and desire to help others nobody suspects a thing.
  • Break the Cutie: Kaho's friend Risa suffers a small case of this after Izumi dumps her, and possibly Kaho herself. Seeing Risa in so much pain causes her to snap and after helping her, she becomes an official member of the Club and will go on to do bad things like them.
  • Club Stub: The Do-Gooders club only has three members. Four with Kaho at the end.
  • Good Samaritan: What the Do-Gooders Club appears to be... but later turns out to only be doing it for recognition.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Kaho is shown shoving Izumi into traffic, but he isn't shown being hit.
  • Karma Houdini: Nobody is punished for what they do during the story.
  • Only Friend: Risa appears to be Kaho's. Her becoming too occupied with a boyfriend was what caused Kaho to seek a club to join.
  • Paranoia Fuel: In her closing statement, Yomi blatantly says people like those in this chapter actually exist.
  • Secretly Selfish: What the story essentially boils down to.
  • Yandere: Kaho shows very slight non-romantic tendencies when Risa is involved. She resorted to the equivalent of stalking to learn more about Izumi, then forfeited her attempts at coming clean after seeing how devastated she was after Izumi dumped her in order to help her. She then resorted to violence for her sake.
  • You Are Not Alone: After Ichiiro convinces Kaho of this, she tries to tell Risa the same thing in hopes of getting her to talk about her problems.
