Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 4 E 158 Fate Of The Pharaoh 3

Go To

With the Seal of Orichalcos on his side of the field, the tide of the duel against Rafael turns in Yami's favor. Unfortunately, not only does the Seal prevent him from using Timeaus, but its corruptive powers leads him to start disregarding his monsters. When Rafael plays his strongest monster and the unthinkable happens, it takes someone making the ultimate sacrifice to save the pharaoh's soul.

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • Big "NO!": Yami screams this when Rafael attacks with Guardian Eatos to wipe out Yami's Kuribabylon and Catapult Turtle and then, the rest of his life points.
  • Break the Haughty: Yami is left shattered after losing both the duel and Yugi's soul to the Seal of Orichalcos.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Up until this point, Yami has never been beaten save for a few special circumstances (Pegasus's mind-reading, surrendering to Kaiba, etc.). The Seal Of Orichalcos notwithstanding, this is the first duel where he loses all of his life points.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Yugi allows the Seal of Orichalcos to take his soul, saving Yami.
Yugi: It only needs one of us, so I'm letting the seal take me instead.
    Yami: No! Yugi!
  • He Who Fights Monsters: In his duel with Rafael, Yami uses the Seal of Orichalcos and is quickly brainwashed by it, causes him to uncharacteristically sacrifice his monsters when he judges them of no further use.
  • If You Die, I Call Your Stuff:
Weevil: If Yugi loses, I call dibs on his Dark Magician.
Rex: That’s not cool. Why don't you show a little compassion for a change… and let me take his Dark Magician?
    Joey: Watch it!
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Under the influence of the Seal, Yami starts to sacrifice his own monsters left and right, much to the horror of Yugi and Dark Magician Girl.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: In a Call-Back to the duel with Arkana, while it was technically a card effect, Yami's monsters seem all too willing to give Eatos their strength after being recklessly sacrificed by their master.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Yami realizes what the Seal of Orichalcos has done to his monsters and to himself. He even begs for forgiveness to the ghosts of his monsters before they add power to Rafael's Guardian Eatos to defeat him. To top it off, Yugi makes a Heroic Sacrifice and takes Yami's place when the Orichalcos claims his soul.
Yami: (to his monsters) Please forgive me for what I've done to you!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: With Yami having activated the Seal of Orichalcos, Timaeus ditches him.
  • Survivor Guilt: Yami really has this going on, since it's his fault that Yugi's soul gets taken.
Yami: It's All My Fault! Yugi, come back! (slams his fists on the ground) It should have been me, not him! It's not fair!
  • Tears of Remorse: Yami cries bitterly after causing Yugi's soul to be taken. This is the first time he openly weeps (not counting the Single Tear he sheds near the end of his duel with Joey).
  • This Cannot Be!: Joey and Tristan are both shocked when they see Yami lose.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Yami can only stare in shock after Guardian Eatos destroys his Catapult Turtle and Kuribabylon in one attack, along with the rest of his life points.
  • Villain Has a Point: Everything that Rafael said about Yami having the potential for evil has been proven correct, as Yami chose to activate the Seal of Orichalcos rather than accept a meaningless no-stakes loss and has become a darker, more ruthless version of himself.
  • Wham Episode: For the fact that Yugi's soul was taken. And because Yami was defeated fairly!
