Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 10 Give Up The Ghost

Go To

Yugi uses Spellbinding Circle to destroy Ghost Kaiba's Blue-Eyes, but he immediately plays another one! Yugi is convinced that while he may have Kaiba's deck, there's no way he can be the real Kaiba. And he's right—the real Seto Kaiba is still hacking into the network to help Yugi defeat his double.

Seto manages to reduce the attack of the second Blue-Eyes to 2000, but is interrupted before he can affect the third. Yugi is still forced to play monsters offensively, which would spell his doom... But the Blue-Eyes hears its real master's call and disintegrates, stunning everyone present and letting them know the real Kaiba is still alive! Flipping out, the Kaiba impostor reveals himself to be a shapeshifter of some kind; his real form is of a toadlike clown.

The mimic plays the third Blue-Eyes and laughs that Yugi has nothing strong enough to beat him—but Yugi decides to take a play from the real Kaiba's book, using Monster Reborn to summon a Blue-Eyes himself and use the Mystical Elf to strengthen its attack. He defeats the mimic and banishes him with a Mind Crush, but in the meantime Kemo has taken Mokuba away...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Negate Attack is changed from a Quick-Play Spell card to a Trap Card in the dub.
  • Adaptational Explanation: In the original Manga that second Blue-Eyes simply self-destructs on its own somehow reacting to Kaiba recovering from his coma in a reference to Yugi and Kaiba's first duel. The anime version downplays the anomaly a bit, as Kaiba (who isn't in a coma in this adaptation) actively hacks into the duel arena to infect the Blue-Eyes and reduce its ATK points, but is interrupted before they're reduced enough to make its attack survivable; Kaiba yells in frustration, only for the Blue-Eyes to somehow react to that by self-destructing in time.
  • Badass Boast: After defeating the Ghost, Yami Yugi uses his Millennium powers to warn Pegasus that he's coming.
"Pegasus, I sense that you're watching. Consider this a warning: nothing you send against me with stop me! And when we finally duel, believe me, victory will be mine! I'll win back my grandfather's soul, and you will pay for all the people you've hurt in the name of your sick little game! I'm coming for you, Pegasus!"
    (Pegasus's wineglass shatters)
  • Exact Words: In the dub, the imposter keeps telling Yugi that he is the real Kaiba, before finally saying "or at least part of him; the dark part", revealing he is the evil part of Kaiba's heart Yami previously banished to the Shadow Realm.
  • Fat Bastard: The imposter's true form, which stands in sharp contrast to the Lean and Mean Kaiba.
  • A Glass in the Hand: Pegasus' wine glass shatters, but not because of anything he does. It's because Yami's aura is so powerful that it shatters the glass from across the island.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Yugi defeats the imposter with one of the Blue-Eyes that he stole from Kaiba.
  • Insult to Rocks: When the true form of "Kaiba" is revealed, Yugi doesn't know what to call him.
"I was thinking about 'monster,' but I didn't want to insult the cards."
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: Yugi to the Ghost when he commences his final attack.
    • Here it is in the original English dub:
"Consider this a message from the real Seto Kaiba: YOU LOSE! NOW, BLUE EYES!!! OBLITERATE!!!" (after destroying Mimic's Blue Eyes) "Pegasus may have freed you from the Shadow Realm, but it won't happen again! NEVER AGAIN!"
    • And here it is in the uncut dub:
"Prepare yourself! This is Kaiba's anger! Let's do this! HOLY BURST STREAM!" (after destroying Mimic's Blue Eyes) "You stole Kaiba's deck and stained his heart! I won't forgive you! MIND CRUSH!"
  • Residual Evil Entity: In the dub, the fake Kaiba says that he's the evil part of Kaiba's heart that Yami banished to the Shadow Realm after defeating Kaiba back in the pilot. This is in contrast to the original version, where he's a Master of Disguise assassin hired by Pegasus.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Kaiba hacking into the game and the Blue-Eyes disobeying the imposter, who would've totally beaten Yugi, is treated as the right thing — probably because the imposter is using a stolen deck, making it more akin to Screw the Rules, They Broke Them First!
  • Squick: The imposter, after Yugi proves he isn't really Kaiba, expands his entire body, bursting out of his costume, which Tea and Joey find disgusting.
    Tea: Eew! It's hideous!
Joey: I always thought that this duel just might turn ugly, but I never thought that ugly.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The impostor completely loses it when Yugi proves he's not Kaiba, reverting to his true form in the process.
