Recap / Young Justice S3 E25: Overwhelmed

Go To

Artemis enlists Zatanna's help to resolve her issues with Wally's death, while Superboy helps Forager find his place. Metron kidnaps Halo, Cyborg and Lian.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Afterlife Antechamber: Subverted. Zatanna insists that while she can't bring Wally's spirit from the afterlife, she can help Artemis meet him halfway. In reality, however, Zatanna can't even do that much, so she fakes the whole experience using M'gann's telepathy so Artemis can get some form of closure, if not 'real' closure.
  • Artificial Family Member: In a sense. Metron considers Mother and Father Boxes his children, so he calls Violet and Victor his grandchildren, since they are born from his children.
  • Babies Ever After: Part of Artemis's time with Wally involves a happy ending with her suddenly having a child.
  • Better as Friends: The series briefly tackles this head on with Artemis and Will sharing a candlelit dinner and a kiss. But after the events of this episode, they've decided they really are much happier being close friends.
  • Bilingual Dialogue: Halo and Cyborg are only able to speak in Motherbox and Fatherbox noises while in the void, and Metron's responses are the only indication of what they're saying. They seem to be able to understand each other, though.
  • Blatant Lies: Zatanna tells Artemis if she doesn't leave 'Limbo' before a deadline, she will be trapped forever. That was blatantly a lie since Artemis didn't ever really go to Limbo, but they needed some reason to give her a (fake) deadline. Really, just about everything is a lie on the part of Zatanna and M'gann (though Zatanna does all the talking) with regards to Artemis' whole "reunion" with Wally, as Artemis is never speaking to Wally's spirit, but Zatanna, Raquel (who was in on the secret even if she didn't participate) and M'gann let her leave afterward believing she did.
  • Breather Episode: Aside from Baron Bedlam staging a coup in Markovia in the last moments of the episode and Metron's warning to Halo and Cyborg, there really isn't much action going on this episode, especially after the climatic two-parter that was resolved last episode.
  • Call-Back: Artemis reminds Zatanna about the ghost Secret as proof that it is possible to speak to the dead.
  • Children Are Innocent: Lian is completely oblivious to the weirdness of wherever Metron teleported them to, and spends most of her time cartwheeling around in zero gravity.
  • Eldritch Location: Wherever Metron transported Halo and Cyborg to. They can only speak in Fatherbox and Motherbox noises, they seem to be in space but neither they nor Lian have any problems breathing, and the location indicator just says "Unknown" with the time zeroed out, indicating that they're outside both time and space.
  • Glamour: Dubbilex uses his psychic powers to project an illusion over the town, making all the genomorph residents appear human. He drops it when there are no outsiders around.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: The fact that Artemis couldn't call her baby he or she is what starts to break her illusion. Wally calls her out for using "it" to describe the child.
  • Let's Just Be Friends: Will and Artemis both agree they are not right for each other. Artemis is still not quite over Wally, and Will feels it's just too weird.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: The world Zatanna sends Artemis to responds to her desires, causing her to create the life she never had with Wally. She's warned that staying beyond sunrise would see her trapped there forever, and Artemis is tempted to stay until Wally convinces her to move on. Since Zatanna and M'gann are controlling the illusion, it's doubtful she was ever in any danger.
  • No Sparks: Both Will and Artemis have been confused about their feelings toward each other since they've been living together, and finally kiss early in the episode, after which Artemis panics. Once she achieves some closure regarding Wally, however, she is able to look at her and Will's relationship with more clarity...and confesses to him that she really didn't feel anything during the kiss, to which Will responds with relief because he felt the same.
  • So Proud of You: To the extent that Metron can show pride, he admits to being impressed with how Halo and Cyborg have developed.
  • Take That!: Yet another Lex Luthor = Donald Trump joke, with Lex insisting that he can't take sides in the Markovian rebellion because there are good people "on both sides". Trump took heat from the media after insisting there was "violence on both sides" and later "good people on both sides" during the Charlottesville protest rally.
  • The Unintelligible: When Metron boomtubes Halo and Cyborg to the Source Wall, the latter two speak in the same tones used by Mother and Father Box. Metron is able to understand them just fine.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Metron tells Halo and Cyborg that a galactic conflict is coming, and that they'll both be big players in it, if Darkseid doesn't kill them first. He doesn't elaborate any further on the matter.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The episode starts on Valentine's Day. Artemis coming home to a romantic dinner with Will is what prompts her to seek out closure with Wally.
