Tropes

  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Xena brings it out to outsing the Sirens.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Xena tries to deny her affections for Ulysses to get him back to his wife. He doesn't believe her, but agrees to stay in the end.
  • Call-Back: Ulysses knows that Xena helped the Trojans. She insists she was there to help Helen, but he doesn't begrudge her in the slightest.
  • Continuity Nod: Xena remarks she's blinded a Cyclops, too, which was established in the first episode.
  • Easily Forgiven: Ulysses doesn't hold Xena helping the Trojans against the Greeks against her.
  • Evil Laugh: Poseidon, as he leaves the heroes.
  • Green Around the Gills: Gabrielle finds out she has a severe case of seasickness. Doubly funny after she tries to get Xena to appreciate nature.
  • Not Quite Dead:
    • Ulysses had been told by some fishermen that Penelope was killed while searching for him, but she's very much alive. He realizes the fishermen were lying on behalf of Poseidon in order to break his resolve.
    • Just about everyone on Ithaca believes that Ulysses is long dead.
  • Papa Wolf: Poseidon hounds Ulysses for blinding Polyphemus.
  • Performer Guise: Gabrielle disguises herself as a dancer as a distraction so that Xena and Ulysses can hijack a boat.
  • The Power of Rock: Xena breaks Ulysses out of his trance by outsinging the sirens.
  • Sarcasm Mode:
    • Xena has tons of fun with Gabrielle's seasickness given the episode's first conversation:
Xena: Hey, Gabrielle, how’s it hanging? Yep, the peaceful grandeur of the sea sure has a kick to it, doesn’t it? Maybe you should just close your eyes and smell the seagulls.
Gabrielle: Xena, I will remember that, in my moment of misery, you chose levity rather than sympathy.
    • After the heroes refuse to be intimidated, Poseidon departs with a mocking, "Have a nice voyage."
  • Taking the Bullet: Ulysses takes an arrow meant for Gabrielle. Xena berates him for this as she could have easily stopped it with her chakram.
  • War Is Hell: Ulysses describes the Trojan War as ten years of bloody madness that he wants to put behind him.
