Recap / X-Men S3 E1 "Out Of The Past, Part 1"

Go To

Wolverine is lured into the Morlock tunnels by a former lover, who is accompanied by a group of cybernetic mercenaries called Reavers. Wolverine discovers this woman he used to love isn't the woman he once knew, as she's gone through the same cybernetic alterations that the Reavers have, and a new moniker, calling herself Lady Deathstrike. She has discovered a long-buried alien craft and needs Wolverine's adamantium claws to cut it open.

  • Adaptation Origin Connection: In the comics, Yuriko was modified by Spiral at her Body Shop and later joined the Reavers instead of being directly modified by them.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Murray Reese is blond in the comics, here he's redheaded.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers appear before both The Phoenix Saga and The Dark Phoenix Saga. In the comics, they didn't appear until well afterward and for the Reavers, this is crossed with Decomposite Character, but the Reavers are originally guards of the Hellfire Club Wolverine mutilated when he fought his way back in to rescue the rest of the captured X-Men during the events of Dark Phoenix.
  • Animation Bump: This two-parter features darker, more color-saturated and more fluid animation.
  • Adaptational Modesty: Lady Deathstrike's costume has a more substantial white blouse that covers her chest instead of the Navel-Deep Neckline of the comic version.
  • Composite Character: Yuriko Oyama takes the place of Mariko Yashida as Wolverine's Japanese former lover.
    • Her father, Professor Kenji Oyama, is a mix of the comics' Professor Thorton and Kenji Oyama/Lord Dark Wind.
    • Even though Scaleface appeared in "Captive Hearts", in this episode Ape morphs into a draconic creature, just like she did.
  • The Cameo: Maverick makes a cameo in Wolverine's memories.
  • Combat Pragmatist: After Wolverine is captured, Gambit prevents Jubilee from rushing in by pointing out they're outnumbered. He suggests hanging back and waiting for the right moment for a sneak attack.
  • Continuity Nod: Callisto wants to uncover the secrets of the alien ship in order to reclaim her place as the true leader of the Morlocks. In "Captive Hearts", Storm defeated Callisto in a fight for leadership of the Morlocks but left Callisto to rule in her place when the Morlocks refused to join the X-Men at the Xavier Insitute.
  • Cyborg: The Reavers, who have altered themselves with cybernetic parts. The most extreme of them is Bonebreaker, whose legs have been replaced with a miniature tank track.
  • The Dragon: Murray Reese, to Yuriko's Big Bad role of the episode.
  • Evil Redhead: Murray Reese, an evil redheaded mercenary.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Jubilee is insistent on following Wolverine in case he needs help, saying the team is like a family and that they look out for each other.
Gambit: Family? Ha! This family nothin' but trouble.
  • Mythology Gag: Murray Reese speaks with an Australian accent. In the comics, the Reavers operated out of Australia.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Reese prevents Lady Deathstrike from killing Wolverine so that he can get them inside the alien ship. He says she can do whatever she wants to Wolverine after that's done.
  • She's a Man in Japan: In the Latin-American dub of the episode, Callisto is inexplicably depicted with a male voice, even though in her first appearance she was correctly depicted as female.
  • Skewed Priorities: The plan was to capture Wolverine and force him to breach the ship. Lady Deathstrike, however, almost succumbs to her rage and kills him when he's incapacitated, but Reese and the other Reavers threaten to shoot her if she doesn't back off.
  • That Man Is Dead: Yuriko states she's no longer Yuriko, but Lady Deathstrike, calling herself a Living Weapon of revenge.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After the ship is breached.
Jubilee: What is it, Wolverine? What's happening?!
    Wolverine: I don't think I wanna know.
  • To Be Continued: Wolverine breaches the ship to free Lady Deathstrike from the force field, and something nasty starts to emerge.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Callisto's desire to reclaim leadership of the Morlocks causes a chain of events that results in a deadly alien being released.
  • Wham Shot: After Lady Deathstrike gets caught in the force field, Xavier receives a psychic jolt that allows him to understand the alien language. The warning "Lethal Predator" immediately begins flashing on his screen.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Yuriko and the Reavers.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Leech delivers Yuriko's message to Wolverine, she has the Reavers incapacitate him with their stasis webs.
