Recap / Whats New Scooby Doo S 1 E 5 Big Scare In The Big Easy

Go To

The gang stays at a housing estate next to a graveyard during their spring break in New Orleans. They soon realize that two Civil War ghosts re-enact a duel every night to scare away guests. Daphne is later kidnapped so it's up to Fred, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby to find her and uncover the truth.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Ate the Spoon: A variant; when he can't untie Daphne's bonds, Shaggy uses hot sauce to eat through them.
  • Bound and Gagged: Daphne is given this treatment after being kidnapped by the ghost brothers. Eventually, she's found and freed by Scooby and Shaggy.
  • Community-Threatening Construction: Cyrus T. Buford, one of the suspects, wants to buy the Leland family cemetery to expand his water park. Lorelei doesn't want to sell, and he warns her that she may not survive the haunting. Ultimately, he and Lorelei reach a compromise of creating a theme park based on the Leland family.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: The culprit has access to projectors that display very realistic images of the ghosts and would make a fortune if he used his designs in a haunted attraction or theme park. Instead, he uses it to con tourists out of their money.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Caleb, the Confederate brother, sports an eyepatch presumably resulting from battle.
  • Fine, You Can Just Wait Here Alone: When Shaggy sees Leland Gables, he refuses to go into the Southern Gothic building. Velma points out that the alternative is staying outside next to the cemetery. Shaggy admits that either option is creepy, so he chooses the one more likely to involve food.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: Velma notes that the ghost brothers that chased them couldn't be the real thing because of their height. One of the real brothers was taller than the other, while the imposters were the same height.
  • Red Herring: Lorelei's brother has mud on his shoes right after the gang's first ghost sighting and tells the gang a spooky story to keep them out of the cemetery. He isn't either of the culprits.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: A different variation, where the culprit simply uses harmless projections to con tourists. However, when the gang was getting closer to discovering his scheme, he and his assistant dress up as the ghost brothers stop them.
  • Villain Ball: The culprit uses his realistic images of the ghost brothers to con tourists when he could just use them to make an honest living through haunted attractions. Instead of coming clean about it when the gang was close to discovering the truth, he and his accomplice kidnap Daphne to try and hinder the investigation. Now they're charged with kidnapping alongside their con.
