Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 4 E 8 Go Flip Yourself

Go To

In this episode of Go Flip Yourself, the Daltry brothers arrive at Staten Island and face their toughest challenge yet, a musty old mansion full of quirky housemates!

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Once again one of Nandor's wishes comes back to bite him. The novelty of Marwa liking everything he likes has worn off and is now starting to get on his nerves. She also takes over his man cave, locking him out of the room.
  • The Bus Came Back: Simon the Devious is revealed to still be around and coveting Laszlo's witch's hat, having been behind the show with the explicit aim of grabbing the hat one day.
  • Call-Back: Elvis is still part of Simon's crew. Both Laszlo and Nadja still hold a grudge over his betrayal.
  • Celebrity Casualty: In-universe example only, with Toby Daltry (one half of a No Celebrities Were Harmed parody of the Property Brothers) ending up drained by Nadja.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • While Laszlo introduces himself to Simon (posing as Bran), we can see Nadja feeding off of Toby in the background.
    • Simon (posing as Bran) stands in the backyard explaining to the audience that Toby has taken ill and will be sitting that episode out. As he says this, we can see Guillermo burying Toby's corpse in the background.
  • Gambit Roulette: Simon the Devious pitched, sold, and filmed several seasons of a reality tv show all with the express aim of eventually getting one of the vampires intrigued enough to watch it and send in a request for the crew to renovate their house. On top of that, Simon also deliberately cultivated a friendship with Toby and paid for his architecture education so he could create a convincing facade for the show. The invitation would then allow him an opening to eventually make off with the witch's hat. The others are slightly incredulous at the sheer convolution in this plan, but Simon is more surprised that Laszlo actually watched the entire show, since he just needed mere curiosity. It all went off without a hitch, and Simon actually manages to get away with the hat from Laszlo after his previous two failures.
  • Home and Garden: Laszlo starts watching a Show Within a Show called Go Flip Yourself about home renovations. He even hails it as a masterpiece because the renovators truly understand their trade. Everyone else is of the opinion that Go Flip Yourself suffers a bad case of Strictly Formula.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Simon might have walked off with the hat, but during his next episode, the hat's curse causes the house he's showing off to explode violently with him still inside.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Bran and Toby Daltry are in general parodies of Home and Garden hosts, but specifically their status as (supposed) twin brothers brings to mind Drew and Jonathan Scott-at least until Bran is revealed to be Simon the Devious.
  • Out-of-Genre Experience: The mockumentary format is dropped for the pretense of being merely one episode from a long-running Home and Garden show, Go Flip Yourself. There's much more editing involved as they frequently flashback, mark scene transitions, and place more text on-screen besides people's introductory titles in Confession Cam scenes. This conceit extends as far as the credits, which displays the Daltry Brothers production company among the people involved with the making of this episode.
  • Pretend to Be Brainwashed: The people brought in for the new show turn out to mostly be vampires from Simon's crew and were completely aware of what's going on the whole time, pretending to be hypnotized by Nadja to not know Toby is dead.
  • Product Placement: Parodied. Both Laszlo and Simon talk about the show's sponsors and take time to shill them to the audience.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Guillermo points out that Simon could have found someone else who already knew about architecture to be his patsy and saved some of the time invested in this whole venture. Simon's excuse is that his show needed Toby's "it" factor.
