Recap / Wednesday S1E4 "Woe What a Night"

Go To

Wednesday asks Xavier to the Rave'N dance, sparking Tyler's jealousy — but Thing's got something up his sleeve. Meanwhile, Eugene stakes out the cave.

Tropes:

  • Air-Vent Passageway: How Thing gets into the morgue so he can open the door for Wednesday. Justified, since Thing is just a hand and can thus easily fit into narrow spaces.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After discovering Wednesday’s deceit, Xavier asks her if there is someone in her life she does care about.
  • Bad Liar: Wednesday attempts to distract Xavier by asking about the homework assignment they received... only for him to point out they don't have homework. It's subtle, but the way her eyes shift indicates she has an internal Oh, Crap! reaction.
  • Chewing the Scenery: The only apt way to describe Wednesday's wild, over-the-top dancing at the Rave'N, all while retaining her usual stoic expression for a side of Cold Ham. As many viewers have stated, she ATE that scene.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Wednesday failing to reach Eugene in time to stop the Beast's attack, although it's unclear if he's still alive.
  • Covered in Gunge: Lucas and his friends disrupt the Rave'N dance by rigging the sprinklers to spray the Nevermore students with red goo à la Carrie — much to Wednesday's disappointment, it's paint rather than pig's blood.
  • Cut Himself Shaving: Xavier invokes this, pretending that his awkward movements and mostly hidden neck wounds are from getting nailed in fencing. Wednesday doesn't buy it.
  • Dropped Glasses: Fleeing from the monster in the forest, Eugene trips and loses his glasses. By the time he finds them and puts them back on, the monster is already upon him.
  • Faint in Shock: Enid isn't comfortable at all with Wednesday describing the murders and the various missing body parts. After getting handled a few pictures taken straight from the autopsies, Enid swoons and faints. Wednesday then implies this isn't the first time.
Wednesday: [to Thing] Fetch the smelling salts. Again.
  • Faking the Dead: Wednesday's best idea to evade notice inside the morgue is to pose as a new corpse. She fools the coroner.
  • Five-Finger Discount: Thing didn't buy the dress for Wednesday. He just pilfered it from the shop. Wednesday name-drops the trope when she interprets his sign language.
  • Gagging on Your Words: Although she does it mostly to keep an eye on Xavier, Wednesday gets uncharacteristically tongue-tied when asking Xavier to the Rave'N dance (after stating she'd rather stab her eyes with needles).
  • Hidden Depths: Bianca came off as the typical popular girl and nemesis to the new girl. However she admits to Wednesday that her siren song makes it impossible to know a person's real feelings as she can't turn it off. Even her amulet isn't 100% effective, resulting in her being self-conscious on relationships. Being accused of using her power on him is why Xavier dumped her the first place.
  • High Heel Hurt: Wednesday declares that whoever invented high heels was a torturer. For once, she doesn't mean it as a compliment which is saying a lot considering the family she comes from.
  • High-School Dance: The Rave'N is one that Wednesday would really rather not go to. Unfortunately, the universe conspires against her and she ends up going anyway.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: After Ajax clears the air between him and Enid, the two both agree that they should take their relationship slowly... right before launching into a vigorous make-out session.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Tyler accuses Wednesday of being this when it comes to their interactions.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Lucas asked Enid to the Dance, not so they can make their respective ex’s jealous, but as part of a revenge plot for Wednesday destroying the statue of Joseph Crackstone. But after talking to and bonding with Enid he tries to talk his friends out of it but they are unswayed. Lucas feels terrible when Enid confronts him.
  • Poor Communication Kills: This is part of Enid and Ajax's issue. They both brought other dates to the party just to make each other jealous, but when Ajax explains to Enid that the reason he missed their date in the previous episode was a dumb accident that he was embarrassed about, everything is forgiven.
  • Shout-Out: The Sheriff calls teenage detective Wednesday "Velma" and her friends the Scooby Gang.
  • The Stakeout: Wednesday planned for her and Eugene to stake out the monster's lair. Unfortunately, Wednesday is shanghaied into the Rave'N, leaving Eugene alone in the woods... until he isn't alone any more.
