Recap / Wakfu S1E8 "Xav the Baker"

Go To

Once again lost, the gang finds a village where a local baker is being attacked by a bread monster, which destroys his supply of ingredients. Yugo, per usual, volunteers the group to help Xav win a bread-making contest against his stubborn father.

Tropes:

  • Attack of the Killer Whatever: Again, a Bread golem. As in, a giant golem made of bakery products.
  • Diagonal Cut: Ruel's swirling shovel manages to cut the Breadnought's main body into several, equally-distant slices.
  • Epic Fail: One of the contestants uses highly-advanced techniques to make his bread... only to instantly burn the loaves of dough he was preparing, getting expelled from the competition.
  • Fanservice Extra: Chochanna, idol baker and specialist in soft buns, not helped by her cardboard cutout showing her holding two large buns at chest level.
  • Foreshadowing: When the group awakens in the forest, Ruel is the only one who looks in order and perfectly rested. The next episode answers that.
  • Graceful Loser: Ratafouine, while annoyed that he lost to Xav, still accepts that his son won the competition and tells his assistant to stop when she goes berserk and tries to attack everyone with her bread golem.
  • Green Thumb: Amalia uses her Sadida powers to make the seeds of Golden Wheat grow in a few minutes, though apparently it's very difficult and exhaust her.
  • Guile Hero: When the rest of the party agrees to refuse to go along with Yugo's offer to help Xav, the young Eliatrope is able to persuade Amalia, Ruel and Dally with cunning words, pushing the right buttons. When Eva asks why he didn't try to persuade her, Yugo replies that he knows she's too smart for that.
  • Hope Spot: Again, subverted: during the finale of the bakery contest, the judges openly praises Xav's bread for its taste and soft inside... but claims that he lacks a proper crust (his father's specialty, from which he wanted to separate himself) that would make it perfect. Still, they decide to award him to encourage new ideas and experiments.
  • Hurricane of Puns: The original French episode had plenty of bread-related puns.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Eva chastises Sadlygroves' Jabba Table Manners, only to proceed to wolf down a whole baguette with jam herself.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Yugo's Chronic Hero Syndrome is given one.
  • Love Makes You Evil: The villain is Ratafouine's assistant, who acted out of love for him. When he orders her to stop, she does without complaint.
  • Mis-blamed: Xav is convinced that his own father Ratafouine is behind the attacks of the Breadnought and the sabotage. Turns out, his own assistant was acting behind his back.
  • Nausea Fuel: In-Universe, the Ecaflip baker works the dough by chewing it and spitting it out when he's done. The second time he does this, the male announcer actually vomits offscreen.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In trying to fight the "Breadnought" our heroes cause just as much damage.
  • Serious Business: Bakery. Justified, since winning the bakery contest means that the baker has the right to serve his bread to the court of the King of Bonta himself. Based on a real-life French competition.
  • So Proud of You: By the end of the episode, Ratafouine mends fences with his son and congratulates him for his bread.
  • We Need a Distraction: Inverted, when Ruel and Dally are tasked with taking some quality water from the spring, guarded by a ferocious ram-like animal. Ruel claims that they'll have to be careful... only for Dally to rush in and being chased by the beast, which does allow Ruel to recover the water.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Amalia is not too pleased to learn that they just spent a night out in the woods with a whole village of bakers not too far from them... a village that Ruel knew about.
