Recap / Ultraman Z Ep 12: The Cry Of Life

Go To

Ten years ago, a monster crashed to Earth and fell into a deep sleep. Now that monster, Grigio Raiden, has awakened! Z faces off against the monster, but something is wrong with Haruki... King Joe STORAGE Custom fights hard to follow the lackluster Z. How will this battle end?

  • Foreshadowing: Ignoring Haruki's Heroic BSoD, the entire episode is about Kuriyama becoming desperate to order an alien weapon reverse engineered for human use and King Joe was seen in a different light, as if mankind STORAGE is slowly trying to fight in a warfare against monsters with even more deadly weapons. Episode 21 retread this in a very horrifying perspective.
  • Heroic BSoD: Continuing from the previous episode, Haruki's hesitation to kill monsters just hits harder every time he tries to fire the Zestium Beam, both times causing Z to lose his power instantly.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Except for a few instances of holding shoulders, noticed just how the cast members are limited to only the main characters and each of them maintaining their distances were in light of the COVID-19 restrictions in the filming industry. For a better example, try comparing to the STORAGE members bowing in apology to the director in episode 3 to the one in this episode.
  • The Reveal: Grigio Raiden was used as a template for STORAGE's robots in the past.
  • Shoot the Dog: Discussed. Following Haruki's recent breakdown from the previous episode, he asks Yoko that is it necessary to kill the monsters attacking even though some of them did nothing wrong to harm humans. Yoko, however, bluntly responds that she will do whatever means necessary to protect the people. It hits home when she does destroy Grigio Raiden near the end of the episode.
  • Skyward Scream: Haruki, of all people at the end of the episode after Grigio Raiden is destroyed.
  • Tragic Monster: Grigio Raiden is implied to be one, it seems to be in pain from being modified into a bio-weapon and when it's about to killed it cries in vain for its life before King Joe kills it.
    • Given that episode 24 implies that Celebro was responsible for its modification/creation and pretty much destroyed its homeworld doubles the tragic aspect.
