Recap / Total Drama: "You Poor Saps"

Go To

After getting drenched in the sap of the rare Icky Splat Tree, one of the stickiest substances in the known world, the teams must race to the other side of the island, with the team that has the must amount of contestants reach the finish line within the time limit being declared the winner. As the contestants race through the island's rough terrain, they must contend with booby traps, sabotage, and even interpersonal conflict from within their own teams…

Tropes

  • All Up to You: With a majority of Rat Face stuck to the same log, it's up to Caleb to carry them all there. Unfortunately, he collapses from exhaustion before they reach the finish line, causing the team to lose.
  • As You Know: After the example in Person as Verb below, Zee appears in the confessional to explain that Ripper used Priya as a human shield in Season 1.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When MK decides to spray Raj and Wayne after they get stuck together, and after they previously expressed a desire to not cheat, Julia stops her...because she wants to see how tangled up they get.
  • Blatant Lies: Chris tries to claim to Rat Face he is out of the spray to remove the sap off them (at that point everyone except Nichelle and Zee are stuck to the same log) while still holding a can and using it to free Millie when she is eliminated.
  • Butt-Monkey: Essentially, the whole of Team Rat Face is this to an extent with all the slapstick happening to them. Emma, Damien, Axel and Millie have it worst with Axel getting stuck to Ripper by their butts and getting stuck to Caleb's log once freed, Emma getting covered in feathers, attacked by a cat, and ending up on the bottom two, Millie getting covered in dodgeballs and stuck to Damien when they reconcile, and Damien trying and failing to cross a bridge while stuck to Millie and has his tongue stuck to his jacket, preventing him from explaining he and Millie made up, leading to her elimination.
    • Whilst everyone in the team got hit by slapstick, Nichelle gets the lowest amount, only being hit by barrage of candy that sticks to her. Other then that, she has the best luck for her team. Zee also gets off relatively easy, being mostly unscathed aside from getting a raccoon (which he manages to tame) and some garbage stuck to him thanks to Julia and MK's sabotage.
    • Ripper also has moments of this here, being stuck to a tree after he uses his farts to get himself unstuck from Axel (remaining so even several hours after the challenge ends) and the only one on the Skunk Butts not to cross the finish line.
  • Call-Back:
    • Axel and Ripper being stuck together is similar to what happened to Courtney and Duncan in "Paintball Deer Hunter."
    • Damien's tongue being stuck and him therefore being unable to explain he forgave Millie right before her elimination is similar to how Bridgette wasn't able to warn her team of Alejandro in "Anything Yukon Do, I Can Do Better" and how Amy wasn't able to explain who she is after being poisoned with Manchineel Fruit in "Twinning Isn't Everything." The only difference is that this time said inability to explain something important caused someone else's elimination.
    • The raccoon that gets stuck to Zee, which he names Olivia von Trashpanda, is the same one he encountered in the Trash n' Crash Slide the previous episode.
  • Cats Are Mean: Due to being covered in chicken feathers earlier in the challenge, Emma gets constantly attacked by an angry cat who mistakes her for an enormous bird while she's stuck to Caleb's log.
  • Chained Heat:
    • Axel and Ripper spend the challenge stuck together by their butts because of the sap.
    • Raj and Wayne are briefly stuck together after they give each other high fives while still covered in sap and eventually get tangled up when they try to get unstuck until MK uses the spray to remove the sap off them. This happens again as Skunk Butt (minus Ripper) is reapplying the sap, much to Bowie and Julia's annoyances.
    • Damien and Millie end up stuck together after Damien gives Millie a hug when they reconcile.
    • All of Team Rat Face (except Nichelle and Zee) end up stuck together by the end of the challenge and remain this way at the elimination ceremony until Millie is eliminated, requiring the spray to get them unstuck.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: In her final confessional after her elimination, Millie says she should have read Priya's training manual so she could've avoided performing worse than she did in the previous season.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted HARD. The rest of the team makes it clear to Millie that they aren't going to forgive her for injuring Damien anytime soon, and she's basically a social pariah for the entirety of the episode since only Priya will initially talk to her. Eventually, after Millie gives a heartfelt apology to him and admits that she was wrong to have treated him that way and that she still thinks that he's an amazing person even if she knows he’ll probably never trust her again, Damien forgives her as well, but she's still sent home by the rest of the team by a result of 5-3 after they lose the sap race challenge.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While not having problems cheating himself initially, Bowie refuses to force Raj and Wayne into helping Julia and MK sabotage the other team after seeing how guilty they feel about it and opts to just walk them to the finish line.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Axel comes up with the plan for her and Ripper to create a giant fart bubble to get them unstuck and it works successfully. Only now he's stuck to a tree and she's stuck to the log with the rest of her team.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Priya notices Chris holding a can of desappyfying spray at the start of the elimination ceremony, which he claims to have merely misplaced it. The fact that he had it ready despite not being willing to use it until that point meant that one of the still stuck-together members of Rat Face was going home. Indeed, Millie is revealed to have been eliminated soon after, requiring the use of the spray.
  • Heroic BSoD: Raj and Wayne spend the episode bawling their eyes out in shame after being forced into cheating in the challenge.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While their methods of winning are harsh, unethical and undoubtedly the wrong thing to do, MK and Julia do bring up a valid point of how Rat Face currently outnumbers them and how they need to come up with a way to stay one step ahead of them, especially with Raj and Wayne constantly getting stuck to each other from the sap.
  • Jerkass Realization: Despite initially trying to justify her injuring Damien just to win the Waterslide Basketball challenge to the rest of her team initially, being compared to Ripper when he used Priya as a human shield during the last season is all it takes for Millie to realize what a terrible mistake she's made.
  • Knew It All Along: Priya reveals to Millie that she already figured out Millie didn't bother to read her training manual between seasons.
  • Late to the Realization: Raj and Wayne finally understand that the show makes the challenges harder on purpose, to the bafflement of Chef.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Raj and Wayne have this mentality after they get dragged into cheating against their will by Julia and MK. Their sense of remorse goes as far as to try to literally clean themselves of the cheating in the showers and feeling like they are at fault even though Julia was the one who used the anti sap spray on them without their consent.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: What finally gets Millie to realize just how badly she screwed up in the last episode was Damien pointing out that, by getting a teammate harmed purely to win a challenge, she's no different from when Ripper used Priya as a Human Shield in the previous season.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Damien and the rest of the Rat Faces are still furious with Millie after her actions in the last episode, with only Priya being willing to still try and talk to her initially. Even after Millie manages to make amends with Damien and doesn't really do anything wrong in this particular challenge, the severity of her mistake is still enough for the rest of the team to send her home once they lose.
  • Ordered to Cheat: Raj and Wayne are forced into cheating with the rest of the team (minus Ripper due to him running off to find Axel). Granted they try to refuse, but MK forces them to go along with it anyway when they keep getting stuck to each other and MK has to use the spray to get them unstuck.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: MK's intern disguise is just her in the uniform with a large fake moustache. Chef gives her a weird look, while Chris seems oddly amused by something during the briefing.
  • Person as Verb: Damien calls Millie a "Ripper" while telling her off about her actions in the previous episode.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Damien tries to tell the rest of Rat Face that he reconciled with Millie after she apologized to him, but due to getting his tongue stuck, no one is able to understand him which leads to Millie still remaining disliked enough to be voted off.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": How Raj and Wayne react when MK sprays them with the sap remover, pretty much forcing them into cheating.
  • Running Gag:
    • Members of Team Rat Face getting stuck to a log that Julia and MK threw on Priya, Emma and Caleb.
    • Raj and Wayne high fiving each other while covered in sap and getting stuck together.
  • Sarcasm Failure: MK doesn't have anything sarcastic or otherwise to say when Raj truly believes the de-sappifier spray cans that she hid in a log just happened to be there by coincidence.
  • Shower of Angst: Wayne and Raj each take one after the challenge, trying to wash off the smell of cheating.
  • Something We Forgot: Ripper is left behind stuck to a tree by the end of the episode.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When Chris jokingly says that the literally tongue-tied Damien might be saying a meatloaf recipe and Chef says he heard paprika, Nichelle admits in the confessional she also thought he said paprika.
  • TV Never Lies: According to Zee, there's a treasure at the end of every rainbow because it's illegal to lie in cereal commercials.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: Made by Ripper in a confessional after Axel suggests he fart to get them separated. Axel lampshades it.
Axel: You better not be giving that camera love eyes.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Julia has this reaction in response to Raj and Wayne high fiving each other a second time after the team reapplies the sap to ensure Chris doesn't catch them cheating.
