Recap / Total Drama: "Working K9 to 5"

Go To

The campers must avoid being mauled by angry police dogs, brought to the island courtesy of one Valentina MacArthur.

Tropes:

  • Angry Guard Dog: MacArthur's dogs are Edward Scissormouth, Beartrap, Chainsaw, Bloodhunter, and Booger. The former four are vicious Dobermans decked out with metal teeth and chains.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Booger is able to grab Caleb and effortlessly drag him under the water, Priya just stands there and refuses to rush in and help him. You'd be expecing it's because she's still angry at him or terrified, but she admits in the confessional, she wanted to see what the little chihuahua can do.
  • Birds of a Feather: Chris and MacArthur have a sadistically swell time watching the campers get mauled over and over again.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • MacArthur returns to help Chris and Chef inflict pain on the campers.
    • The purple raptor that Julia earned the ire of last season also makes its reappearance when Julia tries to hide in its cave.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: In their first attempt to avoid their dogs, Raj and Wayne attempt to eat their socks in order to prevent the dogs from tracking them through their scent. Surprisingly, this briefly works until Wayne accidentally burps out his socks which land on the dogs' noses.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Caleb tries to deny that Julia is telling him who to vote for, but then realizes that his deal with her where he votes as she does as thanks for the immunity last episode is exactly that.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even Chef thinks Chris and MacArthur are getting too excited about siccing a bunch of vicious dogs on the campers.
  • Femme Fatalons: Julia, the Big Bad of the season, has nails long and strong enough that she's able to dig into the ground hard enough for a dog to have a harder time carrying her, allowing her to be brought back slightly later than Priya and win.
  • Gale-Force Sound: The purple raptor roars at Julia, blowing off her trash shield and allowing Beartrap to sniff her down immediately.
  • Jerkass Ball: In a scene deleted from the BBC version, after Raj dunks into the outhouse to see which side the coin landed on, Wayne doesn't let him out in spite of his pleas, pretending not to hear him. While it's meant as a friendly ribbing, it's the second of two scenes (and more glaring one than the Hockey Bros' introduction) where Wayne acts far different from his usual sympathetic portrayal.
  • Kick the Dog: Julia mentions in the confessional that she had a purse dog, but got rid of it because it got more likes than she did.
  • Killer Rabbit: Booger may be a sneezy chihuahua, but she is still strong enough to drag Caleb around.
  • Meaningful Name: Chainsaw can bite through trees, with MacArthur lampshading that she didn't name him that for nothing.
  • Not Now, We're Too Busy Crying Over You: It takes Wayne a while to realize that Raj is not the mauled crash test dummy that he's crying over.
  • Rank Up: In the meantime between The Ridonculous Race and the show, MacArthur has gone up from cadet all the way to master sergeant of a K-9 unit.
  • Record Needle Scratch: The ominous music that introduces the dogs scratches when Booger shows up.
  • The Runt at the End: The last dog to show up is the chihuahua Booger. That said, she is just as much of a powerhouse as her fellow canine companions, and is shown to be capable enough to drive a freaking jet ski.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Wayne describes a puppy as if a dog and another dog had a baby, which Chef points out that's exactly what a puppy is.
  • Shout-Out: Edward Scissormouth is a reference to Edward Scissorhands.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Invoked when Julia tries allying with the purple raptor to ward off Beartrap. The raptor opts to join Beartrap in mauling her instead.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: The dogs do not stop for any obstacle. Shut the door? They know how to open it. Climb a tree? They'll fell it by biting through the trunk. Jump in the water? They'll fish you out. Use an escape boat? They'll chase you down on a jet ski.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Even though MacArthur appears, she fails to mention her partner, Sanders, and her love interest Brody.

MacArthur's dogs

MacArthur's dogs are all vicious Dobermans with intimidating names... and then there's Booger, who is a vicious chihuahua with a silly name.

How well does it match the trope?
