Recap / Titans S 2 E 1 Trigon

Go To

With Rachel's father Trigon having successfully turned Dick dark, he sets out to win the others over to his side by embracing their inner darkness. With everyone under Trigon's control, Rachel and Gar find themselves fighting what seems like a hopeless battle against the powers of Trigon.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • And Show It to You: Trigon rips out Rachel’s heart and crushes it in front of her.
  • Apologetic Attacker: In Kori’s hallucination, she apologies to Rachel before attacking her.
  • Badass Normal: Dawn, Hank, Jason, Dick.
  • Batman Gambit: Appropriately. Having gone into Dick's mind, Rachel puts herself in a deadly situation on the trapeze in his old circus, hoping (correctly) that he'll rescue her and snap out of Trigon's whammy.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Gar tries to protect Rachel as best he can throughout the episode.
  • Boom, Headshot!: In Jason’s hallucination, this is how he kills Dick.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Trigon manages to gain control of everyone but Gar and Rachel. He uses them to attack and beat Gar.
  • Break the Cutie: Trigon’s goal with Rachel, he needs her heart to break in order to be free to roam Earth.
  • Cooldown Hug: A handholding variant.
  • Destination Defenestration: In Donna’s hallucination, she throws her parents' killer out the window after he tells her to arrest him.
  • Flipping the Bird: In Jason’s hallucination, he flips Dick off after he tells him to give up.
  • Hallucinations: Trigon uses these to break everyone and gain control over them.
    • Kori sees herself completing her mission and killing Rachel.
    • Donna sees herself trying to save her parents from a fire, not succeeding, and killing her parents' murderer by throwing him out a window.
    • Jason sees himself fighting Dick and then killing him with a gunshot to the head.
    • Hank sees himself regretting letting Dawn see him kill his former coach and helping her become addicted to drugs.
    • Dawn sees herself becoming addicted to drugs with the help of Hank.
  • He's Back!: Slade’s assistant asks him if he’s back in business.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight:
    • Rachel tries to talk Dick out of Trigon's influence. It fails the first time, but the second time she goes on a Journey to the Center of the Mind and is more successful.
    • When Gar attempts this with Rachel after she is under Trigon’s influence, it works.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: When Gar comments that he knows that everyone wasn’t themselves when they attacked him as Dick was actually funny under Trigon’s control, Dick tells him he is listening.
  • Internal Reveal: Donna reveals to Dawn, Hank and Jason that Kori is an alien.
  • Kill It with Fire:
    • In Kori’s hallucination, she uses her starfire blast to incinerate Rachel to a husk.
    • In Donna’s hallucination, her parents are killed by a fire set by an arsonist neighbour.
  • Mythology Gag: Raven gets her iconic forehead gem.
  • Neck Snap: How Trigon kills Angela.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands:
    • While Gar said last season that his default form was a tiger, this episode has him turn into a snake with no explanation.
    • Rachel’s ability to defeat Trigon comes out of nowhere. However multiple versions of Raven have been implied to be born with power either equal or greater than her father.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jason screaming out on a live news report that the Titans are back alerts the retired Slade Wilson to take up the mantle of Deathstroke again to finish what he started.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • In Jason’s hallucination, his fight with Dick is pretty one-sided. Jason only get the upper hand when he grabs the gun Bruce keeps in the Batcave to use on Dick.
    • With everyone under Trigon’s control, Gar suffers this at their hands.
  • On One Condition: A non-money variant. Bruce allows Dick to use the San Francisco Titans Tower again, only if he takes Jason with him.
  • Pyromaniac: The man that set the fire that killed Donna’s parents is this.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Slade pulls this on the shopkeeper after he sees Jason claim the Titans are back on the news.
  • Unseen No More: Bruce Wayne finally appears. He looks just like Iain Glen.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Angela fails to grasp all the way to her death that this has always been what she is to Trigon.
    Trigon: First, some housekeeping.
    Angela: I don't understand.
Trigon: You never did. (snaps her neck)
  • Walking Wasteland: Grass and trees turn brown and birds fall dead from the sky as Trigon strides across the land.
  • Wall of Weapons: Slade has this in his locked armoury, mostly of guns.
  • Who Are You?: Donna asks this about Jason, when he shows up in his Robin costume to fight Trigon.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Trigon has no problem using people under his control to attack children – Gar – or ripping his own daughter’s heart out.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Rachel tells Dick that if she dies inside his mind, she'll die in real life.
