Recap / Thundercats 1985 S 01 E 06 The Terror Of Hammerhand

Go To

"A boy and his dog are no match for HAMMERHAND!"

The land First Earth knew as Egypt and the Thundercats now know as home has some visitors — a ship full of pirates called the Berserkers, Berserkers, BERSERKERS! (No, not those Berserkers, although their leader Hammerhand is certainly deranged enough.) They've come to hunt — specifically, unicorns. Snarf gets himself captured helping one escape from them. Lion-O's saving another unicorn from being eaten by a hostile tree when he gets the alert. He goes looking for the beach he saw in the sword and ends up finding the whole herd of unicorns and their two elf-like keepers. Although they're suspicious of him at first, the keepers come to trust him, especially after he saves the unicorns from the Berserkers. Unfortunately, they still get away with Snarf and the baby unicorn. Lion-O manages to catch them with some help from the Ring of Power his unicorn friend gave him, and a sea battle ensues with quite the unexpected ending for the time...

This episode provides examples of:

  • A Boy and His X: Hammerhand refers to Lion-O and Snarf as "a boy and his dog" (suggesting he's never seen a dog before...).
  • Amphibious Automobile: The first time we see the Thundertank enter the water like a boat.
  • Antagonist Title
  • Arcadia: Half the episode takes place here, where the unicorns and their keepers live.
  • Artificial Limbs: Hammerhand gets his name from the giant metal fist he has in place of a left hand.
  • Badass Normal: The Berserkers (except for Hammerhand) in this episode.
  • Combat Tentacles: The branches that the tree uses against Lion-O take on this form.
  • Cutlass Between the Teeth: Lion-O holds the sword in his teeth when he's forced to dive into the ocean.
  • Declaration of Protection: The two unicorn keepers are fiercely protective of their flock. They're ready to attack Lion-O until they realize he means them no harm.
  • Gender-Inverted Trope: In-Universe! The keepers are stunned when they learn one of the unicorns trusted a man enough to give him her ring — "No man has ever worn that ring!" (Maybe they wouldn't be so surprised if they knew he was much younger than he looks...)
  • Giant Flyer: The Sword of Omens is grabbed by a giant bird.
  • Licked by the Dog: The keepers trust Lion-O once they see he made friends with one of their unicorns.
  • Mega Maelstrom: Lion-O gets sucked into one as he tries to catch up with the Berserkers' ship.
  • Now, Let Me Carry You: Lion-O saves a unicorn from a tree monster; in return, she gives him a Ring of Power that gives him a Heroic Second Wind when he has to escape a whirlpool.
  • Mood Whiplash: Pretty standard episode with a lighter plot than usual... wait, did the heroes just kill the bad guys?!
  • Parental Bonus: The episode becomes highly amusing once you're old enough to know why it's supposedly rare for a unicorn to befriend a man.
  • Ravens and Crows: The dragon-sized bird Lion-O has to fight for the sword resembles a giant crow.
  • Ring of Power: It gives Lion-O the strength to swim out of a whirlpool.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: The unicorns only make what sound like neighs and whinnies to us, but their keepers apparently understand them as if they speak perfect English.
  • Teleportation: Lion-O's unicorn friend teleports him onto the back of the giant bird flying away with his sword.
  • Unexpectedly Dark Episode: The episode ends with the Thundercats killing the Berserkers. note
  • Verbal Tic: The Berserkers like to repeat everything three times, three times, three times!
  • When Trees Attack: Lion-O saves a unicorn from a sapient tree trying to eat it.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The unicorn the Berserkers set their sights on is just a baby.
