Recap / The Venture Bros S 7 E 5 The Inamorata Consequence

Go To

Doctor Venture, Brock and the family return to the remains of the Venture Compound for the re-signing of the G.C.I. and O.S.I.'s Treaty of Tolerance.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Rusty realizes that his father was just as bad a parent to him as he was a mediator between the O.S.I. and the Guild years earlier after he sees the "traditions" his father came up with, such as the pool fight, and how the O.S.I. and Guild representatives act like petulant children towards each other. The story about the mass-produced H.E.L.P.eR.s also hints that he didn't really bother to child-proof them so that their parts wouldn't end up as a choking hazard.
  • Blatant Lies: During Phantom Limb's introduction, he is stated to be the "Victor of the Battle of Cremation Creek". He was decidedly not the winner there and several individuals are present who were (Dr. Mrs. the Monarch, Rusty, Brock, Hank, Dean...). No one calls him out on it as everyone is introduced with impressive sounding titles and accomlishments as part of the event's bluster.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Inverted, as both sides use their own tactics to try and make it look like they have the objective high ground. The Guild lowballs just how threatening their villains can be, such as waving away the dangers of Level 5 villains and heroes when the previous episode showed how powerful they can potentially be in the form of Victor von Helping. The O.S.I. (mostly Hunter) outright accuses the Guild of slander and frames whatever they say as hyperbolic personal attacks.
  • The Bus Came Back: Dermott makes his first appearance since "All This and Gargantua-2." Likewise, the star-crossed OSI agent Kimberly McManus and Guild Stranger S-464 previously appeared in the season 6 finale, during the joint Guild-OSI sting at VenTech Tower.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The Peril Partnership, first seen in "Any Which Way But Zeus".
  • Continuity Nod: S-464 goes around announcing his brain dome to people because in Red Means Stop, this is how he and Agent McManus said they would recognize each other again.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: It is finally revealed after all of this time why Rusty did not simply reproduce H.E.L.P.eR. and profit off of that; his father already did. After a while, the H.E.L.P.eR.s were recalled when the parts were declared choking hazards, Team Venture's H.E.L.P.eR. and a red second-generation H.E.L.P.eR. the only surviving robots.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Rusty chews out the O.S.I. and Guild for acting like children with their inability to compromise. Nobody denies his words.
  • Like a Duck Takes to Water: After previously only being shown to talk big but almost never deliver on it, Dermott seems to have taken to being an O.S.I. grunt pretty well.
  • Logical Latecomer: Rusty learns the bizarre traditions of the summit as he moderates it, calling out how odd they are. By the end, he realizes that they exist because Jonas Sr. saw the O.S.I./Guild conflict as a bunch of children fighting and treated them as he treated his own son.
  • Minor Flaw, Major Breakup: Kimberly ends up breaking up with S-464 because he got pee-pee on his belt. Subverted when it turns out she didn't breakup with him because of having urine on his belt but because he was a mole for the Peril Partnership.
  • Product Placement: The Fudgie the Whale cake that's served at the Treaty of Tolerance. During the original airing of the episode, Adult Swim promoted a contest in which people were to call in to be entered for a chance to purchase one of four Venture Brothers-inspired ice cream cakes made by Carvel, the makers of the Fudgie the Whale cake.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Part of Dragoon's introduction states that he was "the overseer of the execution of the Iron Infidels". After, he whispers to Red Mantle that he doesn't remember that.
  • Shout-Out:
Corporal Snoopy: Was this gala catered by Doc McStuffins, by any chance?
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rusty not only chews out both sets of representatives for wasting time with "pool battles" and slinging petty insults/threats at one another like children, but goes into a posthumous Calling the Old Man Out on Jonas, Sr. for passing the buck on his responsibilities in maintaining peace during the treaty signing, reinforcing Jonas' position as an overall "shitty parent", not just towards Rusty, but to his allies and associates as well.
  • Robot Buddy: Jonas intended for H.E.L.Pe.R.s to be mass-produced as household servants, but things went downhill after a baby managed to pluck one's eye out and almost choke on it. It's heavily implied at this point in the series that he could have avoided this if he had just made sure to build them a little better.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: While things don't usually go well for him, Rusty can successfully mediate a deal between the Guild and the O.S.I.
  • Wetware CPU: Ben augmented his second-generation H.E.L.Pe.R.'s intelligence and capabilities using human parts. It may be implied this is where Jonas got the idea to turn Blue Morpho into Venturion.
  • Wham Episode:
    • This episode hints that Rusty was also cloned and brought back to life repeatedly, just like Hank and Dean. At least, that's how Dean interpreted it. Instead, it could be that Dean is Rusty's clone.
    • The Guild has a mole from the Peril Partnership, discovered because Hank and Dermott spied on OSI Agent Kimberly McManus and Guild Stranger S-464 having a cross-agency romantic affair.
  • Wham Line:
    Dean: Goodbye, H.E.L.Pe.R. Model-2.
    H.E.L.Pe.R Model-2: Goodbye, Rusty Venture.
    • And:
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch: We have to put a tail on S-464.
Phantom Limb: Oh, give him a break. Just a kid in love with the wrong person.
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch: Limb, he had "PP" on his belt.
Phantom Limb: It happens! Even I do it! Sometimes you think you've got it all out, and then...
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch: No! Really? Why would they fight over that? No, he had "PP" on his belt. The letters "P" and "P". All members of the Peril Partnership wear a belt buckle with two "P"'s on it. Hello?! We have a mole!
