Recap / The Venture Bros S 7 E 2 The Rorqual Affair

Go To

Part two, of "The Morphic Trilogy". Wide Wale finally captures the Blue Morpho. 21 and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch with the help of Red Death try to rescue him.

  • Back from the Dead: Dr. Dugong, who claims that while the Monarch did kill him during Tears of a Sea Cow, his body was able to fully regenerate his head thanks to his starfish DNA.
  • Cerebus Call-Back: The Sharky’s Machine "Movie Night" incident on Gargantua-1 was told to Hank and Dean all the way back in Season 1's Careers in Science.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Dr. Dugong's death from Tears of a Sea Cow served nothing more than to quickly showcase how unstable the Monarch is. Here however, his death plays a much more integral role.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Again, Dr. Dugong.
  • Cliffhanger: Just like the previous episode. It ends with the group baffled as the Venture Building shakes, while they witness a second Blue Morpho emerging from their car. Justified though, as the episode takes place during the same time as the last one and not a mere continuation.
  • Continuity Nod: 21 is sporting the lower back butterfly tattoo he got back in season 2.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Wide Wale is the brother of Dr. Dugong, and despite pursuing opposite paths, Wide Wale still loves his brother and wants revenge on the Monarch.
  • Fake Nationality: In-Universe. After Wide Wale reveals he and Dr. Dugong are brothers, Monarch begins to poke holes in his 'Italian mafiosi' persona. According to Wide Wale, his wife was half-Italian, and he may or may not have studied in Italy for a while. Both Monarch and Rocco mock the idea of taking a trip and coming back with an accent.
  • Foreshadowing: During part of the Monarch's captivity, the Monarch dreams that he's swimming in the ocean and he asks Rusty to join him. Rusty refuses because it's cold and the Monarch starts to say something along the lines of "oh come on, you were never there for me". This reference is semi-explained in the next episode. The next episode shows that the Monarch may have played with Rusty when they were kids because their dads were "good" friends. Venturion (cyborg Blue Morpho) hallucinates about the two playing with a toy truck together which may be one of his lost memories. The next episode hints that due to Jonas Venture's actions, Rusty Venture and the Monarch are half-brothers, revealing that the Monarch's and Rusty's hatred of each other may be some kind of subconscious Cain and Abel and Sibling Rivalry complex.
  • Friendly Enemy: The Monarch forms a very bizarre one with Wide Wale and Rocco. Despite being their prisoner, the Monarch actually bonds with them over acquired accents during vacations and goes along with Wide's lie about not being a villain. Also, Rocco tries to do Mad Libs with the Monarch.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: Wide Wale tries to get "Enrico Matassa" to kill the Monarch as part of his initiation into his criminal enterprises. For bonus evil points, he knows Enrico is actually Hank.
  • It Was Here, I Swear!: Gary, having finally confessed the Monarch's plan to Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, brings her down to the Morpho Cave, only to find it's been replaced by an ordinary basement with an inadequate water heater.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Both Rocco and Wide Wale make fun of how obvious that the Blue Morpho is The Monarch in disguise. Later on, the Monarch was able to tell that Enrico Matasa was Hank in an instant.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Dr. Mrs. The Monarch offers Red Death the fun of getting to "break into an O.S.I dummy corp" i.e. a fake corporation that is a front for the O.S.I. One Gilligan Cut later reveals the exterior of the building literally says "Dummy Corp".
  • Shout-Out:
    • One of Wide Wale's henchmen refers to Dr. Mrs. The Monarch as "Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS."
    • There are several references to Jaws:
      • Red Death paraphrases profession shark hunter Quint:
You all know me. You know how I earn a living...
      • A Guild villain takes credit for catching Blue Morpho who is really a hobo in a costume. He's even strung up on a dock like the tiger shark in Jaws. Phantom Limb, knowing it isn't the real Blue Morpho, still wants to say that the matter is resolved just like the mayor in the movie.
  • Skewed Priorities: Red Death's only reason to team-up with 21 and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is so that he can kill the Monarch himself in order to join the Council of 13, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch convinces him otherwise though.
  • Synchronous Episodes: This episode takes place during the same time as The Venture Bros. & The Curse of the Haunted Problem. The plots only intersect at the very end, with the confrontation with Wide Whale happening at the same time as the Triad's exorcism.
  • Villain Episode: This episode entirely focuses on the Monarch's side of the plot, with Rusty only briefly appearing in a dream, and Hank becoming involved towards the end.
  • Villains Out Shopping: We see more of Red Death in his home bonding with his daughter before he discusses business with Gary and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch.
  • Wham Line:
Red Death: (pulls out a red ticket from his wallet) You ever seen one of these, kid?
21: A ticket stub? Yeah. What’s that, from the first time you got some girly action?
Red Death: No, Gary. That’s a ticket stub for Movie Night… on Gargantua-1.
Dr. Mrs. The Monarch: (pulls a file out of the drawer she was searching) Found it. (realizes what he said) Wait… you were at Movie Night?
  • Wham Shot: The Stinger shows that there's another Blue Morpho, who may or may not be the real one.
  • What's Up, King Dude?: Much of Wide Wale's dialogue with Rocco is usually casual banter about their personal lives, something Monarch gets in on when it comes to henchmen.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Something Dr. Mrs. The Monarch lampshades and takes full advantage of with the sea-lice minions she seduces.
  • You Killed My Father: Dr. Dugong is revealed to be Wide Wale's brother, and Wide Wale wants to kill Monarch for revenge. Dugong turns out to be alive at the end of the episode, so Wide Wale drops the vendetta.
