"You didn't hear the noises? The guys in the masks that just shot up the house?"
Diego to Grace

"Extra Ordinary" is the third episode of The Umbrella Academy's first season.

After seeing an incriminating tape of Grace and Reginald the night of the latter's death, Luther and Allison begin to suspect their "mother" of killing Reginald. Diego and Eudora investigate the ruins of the department store as Hazel and Cha-Cha face continued pressure to kill Five, who continues to track the prosthetic eye. Vanya struggles with her violin career and finds comfort in Leonard.

In a flashback, Vanya sees a copy of an Umbrella Academy comic featuring her siblings in a pawnshop window; she promptly buys a typewriter and uses it to write her memoir, Extra Ordinary: My Life as Number Seven. This same flashback implies, through voiceover and her siblings' horrified and hurt reactions, that Vanya spilled their secrets and did not portray them (and herself) in a flattering light.

Luther and Allison share their suspicions with their siblings; Diego in particular takes the accusations hard. Cha-Cha and Hazel break into the mansion and attack the siblings. In the aftermath, Vanya goes to Leonard's, and the agents kidnap Klaus.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Ambiguous Situation: At this point it's unclear if Grace truly did kill Reginald, but it turns out she is malfunctioning.
  • Brutally Honest: Fellow violist Helen criticizes Vanya on her progress, not in lacking of practice but in lack of passion.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Klaus does it in the bathtub after seeing the faces of dead people.
  • Comfort Food: Hazel got himself a jelly doughnut after the failed coup at the mansion.
  • Dartboard of Hate: In the flashback showing the writing, publication, and fallout of Vanya's book, we see Diego hitting a punching bag with Vanya's author photo taped to it.
  • Diegetic Switch: The song Klaus listens to on his earphones in the bathtub shifts onto the soundtrack.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Grace during the fight at the academy.
  • Falling Chandelier of Doom: Cha-Cha drops a chandelier on Luther when she and Hazel attack the mansion. He survives because of Super-Toughness, but the agents are able to escape as a result.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: A brief shot of Reginald's portrait during Cha-Cha and Hazel's break-in shows that it was shot seven times.
  • Grew Beyond Their Programming: Diego believes that Grace's care for the children is genuine, because Reginald never would've programmed it.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Klaus remains unaware of the fight scene at the mansion because he has his headphones on. Thus, was completely off-guard when Hazel kidnapped him.
  • Improvised Weapon: Cha-Cha uses a pool cue to attack Allison and Diego.
  • Internal Reveal: Diego confessed to stealing the monocle. He took it from Grace because he knew Luther would jump to conclusions.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Diego (after he had to shutdown Grace) tells Vanya to leave because she's a liability. Allison think he may be right. For Vanya, it's the underlying fact that she's just not super-powered like her siblings.
  • Mercy Kill: At the end of the episode, Diego deactivates Grace after seeing how far her programming has degraded.
  • Pensieve Flashback: When Diego flashes back to the moment he overcame his speech impediment by help of his mother, his adult version is in the room sitting on the bed.
  • Safe Behind the Corner: Vanya is hiding from the baddies behind a column of an arcade. One of the henchmen enters the arcade and turns towards Vanya's hiding spot but then changes his mind and walks back.
  • Self-Surgery: Five stitches his shoulder wound.
  • Title Drop: "Extra Ordinary" is the title of Vanya's autobiography.
  • Trunk Shot: Of Hazel and Cha-Cha looking at Punk in the Trunk Klaus whom they captured at the mansion.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Hazel finishes off Luther with a suplex.
