Recap / The Ultimate Evil, "Help"

Go To

After Jackie acquires the Demon Archive, Valerie agrees to make for Jade a fake tattoo of its symbol while they have a girl's night at her apartment, leading to her being assaulted by Hak Foo who mistakenly thinks she has the Archive. A retelling of the first part of "Queen of the Shadowkhan".

  • Actually Pretty Funny: While Valerie is outraged by the nerve Shendu exhibits in his latest love letter to her, a part of her finds amusement in it.
  • Bridal Carry: Shendu carries the injured Valerie this way.
  • By the Hair: Hak Foo restrains Valerie at one point by grabbing her hair until she manages to break free by jabbing her elbow in his nose.
  • Call-Back: Jackie taught Valerie in the previous chapter to do a counter attack right after a sweeping block. She manages to successfully perform this once on Hak Foo.
  • Can't Take Criticism: When Tchang Zu says Shendu had better not dishonor their family by having carnal desires towards Valerie, Hsi Wu retorts that he's not innocent of such desires himself. The Thunder Demon responds by sending a lightning bolt at the Sky Demon.
  • Chekhov's Gun: In the beginning of the chapter, Shendu adds to his letter to Valerie his symbol which she can use to summon him. When Hak Foo's attack leaves her barely alive, she accidentally uses the symbol to summon Shendu before she passes out.
  • Cliffhanger: Shendu takes the barely alive Valerie to the fish cannery and starts treating her back to health.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Valerie, a bookwormish Action Survivor, is badly outmatched against Hak Foo, a muscular master martial artist, but she manages to use Jackie's self-defense lessons to give him a few painful strikes, block one of his blows (much to the surprise of them both), and slash his forearm with a carving knife before he inevitably brings her to her knees.
  • Fantastic Racism: Bai Tza and Tchang Zu are the most vexed of their siblings to learn that Shendu's Other is a human, for they consider humans to be below them in every way.
  • Foreshadowing: Each Demon Sorcerers' individual thoughts about Valerie give a good view on how each of them will regard her in the future.
  • Get Out!: Valerie screams this as she makes one last attempt to attack Hak Foo.
  • Hypocritical Humor: As the Demon Sorcerers discuss about the implications of the existence of Shendu's human Other, this exchange occurs:
Tchang Zu: Let us hope that Shendu only has want of her power, lest he dishonour our kind further with touching her filth.
Hsi Wu: As if you never had an appetite for the softness of female flesh, brother.
  • Kick the Dog: Hak Foo callously leaves Valerie to die after trashing her apartment in a failed attempt to find the Demon Archive.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Jackie gets to Valerie's apartment right after Shendu teleports out of there with Valerie.
  • Never My Fault: Shendu orders Finn and Ratso to bring him womenswear without telling them that they're for Valerie or giving any specifics on what kind of womenswear are needed. Believing he has a fetish for dresses since he's started wearing a sorcerer's robe, the clothes they bring him turn out to be dresses or too big for Valerie, making him curse their incompetence.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Hak Foo doesn't pull his punches against Valerie, leaving her on the verge of death.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: While treating Valerie's wounds, Shendu admits to himself that despite his low opinion on humankind, their modern medicine usage is effective.
  • Punch Catch: Hak Foo does this with Valerie.
  • Soft Glass: Averted; Valerie being thrown on her coffee table by Hak Foo leaves her even more injured by the glass shards that stick to her back.
  • This Cannot Be!: Bai Tza has this reaction to learning that Shendu has found his Other in the form of a human female.
  • Undressing the Unconscious: Downplayed when Shendu removes Valerie's shirt to treat her wounds; he leaves her bra on, though he does have to keep a reign on his urges before he puts a new shirt on her.
  • Villainous Medical Care: The chapter ends with Shendu giving Valerie first aid and preparing for her a Healing Potion.
  • Villainous Rescue: With Valerie gravely wounded by Hak Foo, she unintentionally summons Shendu who teleports himself to her trashed apartment. He uses the same technique to bring her to the Dark Hand's hideout where takes her under Villainous Medical Care.
