Recap / The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody S 2 E 1 Odd Couples

Go To

When London falls in love with a merit scholar, Trevor, Maddie helps her pretend to be smart in order to impress him. And after Zack's messiness gets out of hand, Cody moves into the suite's coat closet.

Tropes:

  • And I'm the Queen of Sheba:
London: After all, I am a merit scholar.
Mr. Moseby: (sarcastically) And I'm an Egyptian belly dancer named Melina.

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: It doesn't start off as belligerent at first. At the start of the episode, Maddie clearly finds Trevor attractive, agreeing with London about him being cute, and chuckles at his jokes, but she's generally cordial towards him the few times they interacted in the first half of the episode. Their tension only becomes belligerent when Maddie finds out about his anti-environmental political beliefs and gets into a heated argument with him, which results in two equally heated make-out sessions.
  • Closet Sublet: Cody decides to live in their suite's front closet when he gets fed up with Zack refusing to clean his side of their room. He moves back once Zack decides to clean it up.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Cody, out of frustration from constantly having to clean up his brother's messes in their room, decides to leave. Zack at first doesn't care but eventually starts missing sharing a room with Cody so much that he cleans up the room for him as a peace offering.
  • Feigning Intelligence: London hires Maddie to help her keep up with Trevor's intellectual conversations on her dates with him. The plan backfires when Maddie can't restrain herself from getting into a debate over politics with him, culminating in a Slap-Slap-Kiss. Fortunately, London seems more confused than hurt.
  • Playing Cyrano: Maddie helps London pretend to be smart on her date with Trevor by feeding her lines through a microphone and an earpiece. This is because Trevor is intelligent and London is... well... not. It falls apart when the guy says something that upsets Maddie (he's a conservative, she's a liberal), causing her to yell so loudly he catches her, which leads to a Slap-Slap-Kiss between him and Maddie.
  • Repeat After Me: When Maddie explains the Playing Cyrano plan to London:
Maddie: All you have to do is repeat after me.
London: All you have to do is repeat after me.
    Maddie: Not now, London.
    London: Not now, London.
Maddie: (sighs) This so isn't worth the hundred bucks.
London: This so isn't worth the hundred bucks.
Maddie: (brightly) Maddie, I'm gonna pay you $250!
London: Maddie — never gonna happen.
  • Shout-Out: The episode title is a reference to the show The Odd Couple (1970).
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Towards the end of the episode, after Trevor finds out about Maddie and London's Playing Cyrano scheme, Maddie and Trevor get into an argument due to their opposing political beliefs that ends with the most passionate make-out scene ever on children's programming:
Maddie: The good news is, nut girl will probably vote for you, unlike me.
Trevor: Oh yeah? Well I don't need the vote of some tree-hugger.
Maddie: If you have it your way, there won't be any trees left to hug!
Trevor: Oh, next you're going to blame the oil companies for global warming.
Maddie: Yes, 'cause they're to blame.
Trevor: Oh cry me a river!
Maddie: If I did, you'd pollute it!
    Trevor: You bleeding heart liberal!
    Maddie: Establishment puppet!
Trevor: Do you want to kiss me as much as I want to kiss you?
Maddie: I'm surprised someone as smart as you would have to ask!
    (They kiss)
London: (to a museum employee) Wow, didn't see that coming.
    Maddie: I hate you!
    Trevor: I hate you more!
    (They continue kissing)
London: (to the same employee) Boy, I wonder what they'd do if they liked each other.
    • It doesn't help that Trevor and Maddie are played by the same people who played Troy and Sharpay.
  • Slobs vs. Snobs: The crux of Cody's and Zack's conflict in this episode is basically this. Cody is so sick of Zack constantly messing up their room that he moves out.
  • The Stateroom Sketch: Actual Closet variant, completes the homage by having their mother open the door so that everyone tumbles out.
