Recap / The Simpsons S 31 E 13 Frinkcoin

Go To

Professor Frink invents the Frinkcoin and becomes the richest man in Springfield. Burns plans on winning his title back one way or another.

  • Adam Westing: Jim Parsons hosts the video about cryptocurrency, going way over the top in trying to convince the viewers that he's not a big nerd like Sheldon Cooper.
  • Answer Cut: After several billboards pop up disparaging Wiggum’s arrest rate, he and Lou ask who could be leaving them. We then cut to Eddie painting “Give Eddie more to do” on a new sign.
  • Bad Boss: After Smithers calls him "Monty", Burns makes Smithers chew his lobster for him, which Smithers is allergic to and relocates his parking spot far away from the power plant.
  • Bait-and-Switch Sentiment: When Lisa worries she may lose Frink as she's lost other friends in the past, he reassures her that he'll "always be right here," appearing to gesture towards his heart. He's actually pulling a flash drive out of his jacket.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Frink's officemate Prof. Hessler can't stand being with him. When he gives up his fortune and comes back, they immediately start making out.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gil Gunderson suffers several Amusing Injuries.
  • Continuity Nod: Lisa mentions Bleeding Gums Murphy.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Professor Frink.
  • False Friend: In an attempt to break Frink's spirit, Burns tells him that Homer, Lenny, Carl, Barney, Moe, Gil, and Kirk only like him for his wealth. Despite his greedy intentions, he was right. Frink presents Lenny and Carl non-skybox tickets to a baseball game and Lenny suddenly remembers he needs to get a zit removed and Carl needs to be there to resuscitate him. He takes Gil and Kirk to a Chinese restaurant and when asked if they could pay the bill, they run off.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Lisa tells Bart that he'll end up like Homer, Bart lets out a high-pitched scream; as he does, his face turns into Homer's for a split second.
  • Genre Savvy: Well aware that Status Quo Is God in her world (and having already outlived Bleeding Gums Murphy), Lisa is concerned when Frink calls her his best friend, warning him that she loses everything she cares about.
    • Both Krusty and Mel know that no-one in Springfield will solve Burns’ equation, since the town built a wind farm indoors and needs instructions to make ice.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: An intentional example. Burns hires nerds to make him the richest man again. They come up with an equation to make all digital currency worthless but can't solve it for another 9,000 years even with help and working on weekends. Frink solves the equation to return to his humble roots.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Frink suffers much the same problem as Lisa, which ultimately causes them to bond with each other.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: After losing all the False Friends he gained through wealth, Frink ultimately concludes that Lisa, as the only one who truly understands him, is his best friend.
  • Rags to Riches: Professor Frink's newly invented Frinkcoin makes him rich. Though he willingly loses it when he realizes everyone except Lisa only liked him for his money.
  • Rule of Three: in the group counseling meeting Smithers goes to, the name "Roseanne" is used 3 times, and the name "Trump" is said 3 times in a row.
  • Take That!:
    • A package with an "A" and a curve resembling a frowning mouth is thrown through Frink's mansion window starling Lisa. Frink tells her it's just an Amazon delivery.
    • Selma asks if Patty has a cigarette. Patty replies "Not since we moved to Disney". They then put on Mickey Mouse ear hats.
  • Visual Pun: Mr. Burns claims to know all about the blockchain, pressing a button to reveal a man chained to cinder blocks.
