Nolan and Harper are given the job of escorting four juvenile delinquents to a prison in order to "scare them straight." It is a program that none of the police, other than Nolan, have much faith in due to its poor success rate. While at the prison, a riot breaks out and they have to make a deal with Oscar Hutchinson in order to survive.
Meanwhile, Rachel assumes a mother is poisoning her son and has him removed from her custody, only to discover that it is the result of a toxin-infused well. Getting the child back proves a tremendous struggle. Lopez and West also work with a programmer of an algorithm designed to flag problematic cops, which includes Lopez. They stop a shooter at his dating service, only to discover Lopez was not the cop meant to be flagged.
Grace ends her relationship with Nolan when he's about to say he loved her, wanting to get back with her ex for her child's sake.
- All for Nothing: All of Lopez's efforts to prove her point turn out to have been unnecessary because it was a typo rather than the actual program that flagged her.
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The designer of the algorithm's dating app did not flag an active shooter due to him lying about his history of domestic violence.
- Alone with the Psycho: Averted. Hutchinson is a murderer but his It's All About Me attitude gets him to cooperate with the Warden and cops.
- Angry White Man: The active shooter at the dating app HQ is one of these.
- Contrived Coincidence: What are the chances of Lopez being called in to deal with an active shooter at the HQ of the man presently evaluating her?
- Delinquents: Nolan and Harper have to try to influence a group of these to change their ways. They may have succeeded with one.
- Dramatic Irony: Grace leaves Nolan for exactly the same reason he left her.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Rachel reacts this way when she discovers that her actions may have separated a loving family.
- Prison Riot: One of these happens at the facility that Nolan and Harper are taking some juvenile delinquents to.
