Chapter 14: Elixirs and Potions

Uodeela's apprentices finally get to make their first potions.


Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • The Ace: Due to her studying before her apprenticeship, Amara successfully makes the Elixir of Light on the first try.
  • Arranged Marriage: Discussed. Lilly explains to Luz about how most frogs do this, but her father would never do that to her. However, Amara wouldn't have a choice due to her family being upper class and using it as a chance to gain more wealth.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Uodeela's hand has finally grown back after being cut off.
    • Lilly mentions Amara telling her and Gustav about her family's private library in "New World, No Friends".
  • Flashback: To 500 years ago when Uodeela's mother and grandmother teaching her how to make potions, then to 200 years ago when Uodeela first met King Andrias.
  • Forced Sleep: A variant. The first potion Uodeela has her apprentices make is a sleep potion, high demand for farmers and laborers who need a full night's sleep to recover from their day's work.
  • In Spite of a Nail: In spite of the fact that magic works differently in Amphibia, the first bit of magic Luz performs is still a light spell.
  • Light 'em Up: The latest potion the apprentices make is the Elixer of Light, able to give one night vision for up to three hours. Ehen Luz drinks it, she conjures up an orb of light.
  • Time Skip: A few days have passed since the previous chapter and a few more weeks go by before Uodeela decides to let her pupils brew their first potion. More weeks pass as they learn to make other potions.
  • Wham Episode: Luz discovers she can use magic through her potions, which Uodeela realizes is due to her Calamity Gem powers. Uodeela's mother and grandmother were eaten by herons 200 years ago and she was taken in by Andrias, who told her about what Amphibia was once like.
