Recap / The Omnitrix Hero S 1 E 3 Save The Trees

Go To

As Flash and his friends hang out at the local forest, an agency called the Sen-Trees kicks out humans in the area under the justification that they are intruding on a natural environment. Things only get weirder when the plant life turns hostile and the Sen-Trees turn out to have more sinister, ulterior motives.

  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Misty Vail and Trail Blazer, original characters from The Flash Sentry Chronicles debut here, in which they never abandoned Flash and have always been close with him as parents.
  • Always Someone Better: XLR8 teases Rainbow Dash over this as he carries her to safety.
Rainbow: Hey! Going fast is my thing!
XLR8: Then I guess going faster than you is my thing.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The sentient trees start hostile to all humans due to the Sen-Trees' pollution causing them great pain. But when they hear Bushwhacker angrily calling out Oakheart for his treatment towards them, they assist him during his battle against Oakheart, asking him if he really cares about them and is their friend.
  • Bookends: The chapter begins with Flash and his friends hanging out at the local forest together and having several fun activities together, like playing frisbee and trying to get Flurry Heart to walk. At the end of the chapter they all gather there again, but this time all of the living trees join in on the fun.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Chamalien downloads all the evidence against Oakheart and the Sen-Trees, but accidentally drops the flashdrive during his escape. After Oakheart and his goons are arrested, Shining Armor and his boss lament they might not have enough evidence to lock them up for good, until the living trees drop the same flashdrive to them with their vines, providing them with all the evidence they need.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Shining Armor and Cadance's baby daughter Flurry Heart is this as usual. When Flash sees her for the first time, he can't help but tickle her tummy while calling her a cutie. Twilight similarly gushes over her, showing she loves her niece very much.
  • Dramatic Irony: After XLR8 saves everyone and runs them out of the forest to safety and declares everyone is safe, Misty Vail says it isn't because her son is still missing, unaware that XLR8 is her son.
  • Engineered Public Confession: In his exchange with Flash, Oakheart casually admits to being a fraud and happily pollutes the forest for his own gain, which ends up being recorded by Shining and Trixie. Unfortunately, they have no reception in the area to call the police and they're forced to run away from the Sen-Trees before they can share the evidence.
  • Gaia's Lament: The trees turn out to be sentient beings that are harmed by the Sen-Trees' pollution, turning them hostile to any humans. Fortunately, Flash gets the Sen-Trees arrested and placates the forest by promising to have it cleaned up and better protected, which he lives up to by getting a real environmental agency involved.
  • Green Aesop: The chapter ends with a theme of humanity needing to co-exist with nature, neither seeking to destroy or separate themselves from it entirely.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: This is discussed by Flash himself briefly. After Shining Armor tells him how after Flurry Heart was first born, he was paralyzed with fear over the possibility that if something happened to him, it would lead to Flurry growing up without a dad. This makes Flash think about how dangerous his double life as a superhero is and how it could hurt his parents and friends if he got hurt, and wonders if he can even have a relationship with someone because of this.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: The Sen-Trees are introduced as unfriendly eco-activists who do rude things to protect the environment. As Flash finds out, this is a cover-up; they just want to reserve the area for them to dump their waste in.
  • Save the Villain: When Oakheart's mech is immobilized, the forest's vines prepare to kill him for his crimes. Fortunately for him, Flash intervenes and urges them to show mercy, which they oblige. But Flash makes sure he doesn't get off too easy, by punching him in the face himself, knocking him out.
