Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 3 Felix Gets Sick

Go To

Oscar returns from an airplane trip high on life and ready for his incoming date with one of the stewardesses. Unfortunately, Felix turns out to have developed a 48-hour virus and is sick in bed. Despite his illness, Felix urges Oscar to bring his date back to the apartment. Thus begins a very long weekend.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Caretaker Reversal: Subverted. At the end, Oscar turns up in the middle of Felix's date, claiming that he's caught Felix's virus. However, once Felix starts to hustle him into the kitchen for some hot tea, Oscar tells him that actually, he doesn't have a bug; he was just trying to get revenge on Felix.
  • Gilligan Cut: Felix suggests a poker game to cheer up his roommate, but Oscar answers that no one would be crazy enough to come to the apartment in the rain. Cut to Speed at the table, setting things up.
  • Implied Death Threat: Oscar, irritated at Felix for messing up his date, tells him quietly not to commit suicide while he's out, because he wants a piece of the action.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: While Felix is trying to make him feel better, Oscar grouches that right now he just has his sick roommate. Felix asks if he has something he wants to do at the moment, and Oscar answers that there is, but it has to look accidental. After Felix further irritates him, he mutters that perhaps he won't bother.
  • Pulled from Your Day Off: Barbara has a date with Oscar for the last bit of the weekend, and he's taken her to a very romantic restaurant. Unfortunately, her airline calls the apartment to tell her that there's an emergency and ask her to return immediately. She's off to the airport before Oscar can say goodbye.
  • Rock Star Parking: Averted for laughs. When Oscar asks Speed if his wife let him out to play poker, Speed answers that he dropped her off at her mother's and she thinks he's looking for a parking spot.
  • Sexy Stewardess: Oscar describes the stewardess with whom he got a date as an X-rated Ms. Fanservice.
  • Tempting Fate: While telling Murray about his date, Oscar announces that the best part is that Felix is in Washington for the next few days, so he'll have the whole place to himself. Unfortunately, Felix turns out to have come down with a 48-hour virus on the trip. He returned to the apartment to ride it out.
  • Wrong Assumption: Oscar thinks Barbara left when he returns from dealing with Felix to find her no longer on the couch. It turns out she went to the kitchen to get him water to wash down the medicine.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Oscar sets up a date with Barbara for the last part of the weekend. When she can't stop worrying about Felix, Oscar agrees to call him. While he's gone, Felix turns up to tell Barbara that he got a message from her airline asking for her to return immediately. She's gone before Oscar can return.
