Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 4 The Jury Story

Go To

When a news story about a prisoner being released appears on the television, Felix and Oscar tell the Pigeon Sisters about the first time they shared a room while serving on the same jury.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • The Ditherer: One of the jurors keeps saying that the opposing sides may be right and hedging his comments. This seems to come from an insecure personality.
  • Elevator Failure: After the defendant was acquitted, the elevator broke down for two hours. Unfortunately, he got stuck in there with Felix. This led to another series of assaults.
  • House Husband: One of the jurors complains that if they have to stay there much longer, he won't have time to put a roast in the oven and complete other chores before his wife gets home.
  • The Idealist: Felix stalemates the other jurors because he's concerned that they're not taking their responsibility seriously enough in light of its importance. Unfortunately, most of the others just want to go home and increasingly dislike Felix for keeping them there. After some time, they all change their votes to "not guilty" just to appease him, but Felix still isn't satisfied because he wants an honest assessment, not just a victory.
  • Jury Duty: The episode featured future roommates Oscar and Felix meeting as fellow jurors in a parody of 12 Angry Men with Felix in the Fonda role. Interestingly Jack Klugman (Oscar) played one of Fonda's fellow "Angry Men" in the original movie.
  • Rogue Juror: Felix and Oscar tell the Pigeon sisters how they met during jury duty, with Felix in the rogue juror role. Though the jurors eventually found the defendant not guilty by reason of extenuating circumstances, he was driven to commit a violent assault after the trial due to being trapped in an elevator with Felix.
  • Running Gag: The lone female juror keeps asking who some major player in the situation (e.g., the defendant) is.
  • Tempting Fate: After finding out he has to spend the night in a hotel room with no TV or radio and a heavily edited newspaper, Oscar expresses relief upon being told he's supposed to have a roommate, meaning he'll at least be able to talk to someone. Then Felix carries his luggage into the room.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Almost the whole episode consists of Oscar and Felix remembering the trial that introduced them to each other.
