Recap / The Muppet Show S 5 E 6

Go To

Brooke Shields plays Alice as the Muppets take a shot at adapting Alice in Wonderland. A misfire with the special effects leads to Brooke shrinking too much, and Fozzie thinks they're doing a different play.

Songs and Sketches:

  • "Falling Song", done by Brooke Shields and the Muppets as she falls to Wonderland.
  • The caterpillar scene.
  • "These Are the Yolks, Folks", sung by Humpty Dumpty.
  • UK Spot: "When You're Smiling Medley", sung by Dr. Teeth, Floyd, Gonzo, the White Rabbit, the March Hare, and the Duchess.
  • "Jabberwocky", performed by the Muppets.
  • The trial scene, featuring Marvin Suggs as the judge.
  • The Mad Tea Party, which to leads to a rendition of "We're Off to See the Wizard".

"These are the tropes, folks:"

  • Adaptational Decay: Lampshaded In-Universe during the opening number as everyone informs Alice/Brooke of what to expect throughout the episode. Given that the closing number ends up being "We're Off to See the Wizard", they're not lying.
Scooter: Don't be surprised if you meet Captain Hook.
Dr. Teeth: Yeah, 'cause our version won't always follow the book.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Downplayed. After being shrunk, Brooke then goes too far the other way during the caterpillar scene, so tall only her legs are visible.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Fozzie mistook the night's theme as The Wizard of Oz and comes dressed as the Tin Woodsman. In the end, he leads the show in a rendition of "We're Off to See the Wizard".
  • Continuity Nod: Much like in the Lynn Redgrave episode, Miss Piggy tries to become the female lead by removing the guest star.
  • Hair-Raising Hare: Downplayed. After Kermit introduces Alice in Wonderland as being "crammed with warm, lovable characters and cute, fluffy little bunny-rabbits", the bunny that plays the White Rabbit gets on stage and threatens to tear Kermit's head off if he doesn't tell him where the rabbit hole is.
Kermit: And also cruel, heartless, violent little bunny-rabbits.
  • Incredible Shrinking Man: Poor Brooke gets subjected to this for most of the show. The first time is after she eats some cake in Wonderland to follow the White Rabbit through a door too small for her, as per the story. The second is after her mushroom-induced growth to huge size wears off and then goes too far in the other direction, leaving her so tiny that Kermit can't find her for the trial scene. Fortunately, she grows back to her normal size off screen in time for the Mad Tea Party.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Some of Carroll's nonsense words in Jabberwocky are interpreted this way by the Muppets. When the Jabberwock is said to be "burbling as he went", he literally goes "Burble, burble!"; and then Scooter and the Jabberwock's head say "Galumph, galumph" as they go "galumphing back."
  • The Show Must Go Wrong: The Muppets' performance of Alice in Wonderland runs into several snags, such as Fozzie showing up as the Tin Woodsman from The Wizard of Oz and Brooke, Alice's actress, growing and shrinking uncontrollably offstage. Kermit even tries to put a stop to it when Brooke can't be found for the trial scene, only to instead fall victim to Marvin Suggs's various gavel-related shenanigans as the judge.

[Statler and Waldorf are still in their Tweedle-Dee Tweedle-Dum costumes. They are looking down.]
Statler: What's that noise?
Waldorf: I think that's Lewis Carroll turning over in his grave!
