The episode features examples of:

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: This happens during the Talk Spot.
Kermit: Well, uh, this is the part of the show where I usually spend a few moments talking to the guest stars, but in this case, the Mummenschanz don't talk, do you?
    [They all nod.]
Kermit: Yeah? Oh... well... in that case, uh, say something. I mean, say anything. It doesn't have to be important. You can say something silly.
[One of the Mummenschanz blows bubbles in his face.]
Kermit: Ask for silly, you get silly.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Sam introduces Wayne and Wanda, he reads from a review written by Leonard Bernstein, who calls them, "an example of musical mediocrity that passes for entertainment these days." Sam adds, "I like that."
  • Expressive Mask: The Mummenschanz trio play with, deconstruct, mash back together, and otherwise have all sorts of fun with this trope. In their first act, two of them show their feelings for each other by tearing off pages of notepads on their faces showing different eyes and mouths. In the finale, two of them are wearing masks made of clay, which they sculpt into different shapes.
  • Mysterious Note: Miss Piggy finds an unsigned love note to her on her dressing room door, saying that the writer of it is waiting inside the room. Assuming it's from Kermit, she hurries inside to meet him.
Miss Piggy: I am here, my love!
    [Gonzo throws himself at her.]
    Gonzo: Kissy, kissy!
    [Miss Piggy screams.]
  • Negative Continuity: Despite the band quitting in the previous episode after getting tired of playing the theme song, they're back in this one as if no conflict had ever happened.
  • The Voiceless: Kermit is a bit stymied on how to do his usual interview segment with the week's guest, which this time is a mime troupe who never break character. The three finally do speak at the end, saying a single line in unison: "Thank you, Kermit. It's been great."
Kermit: Say, you guys really do work as a team.

Waldorf: That was a funny show.
Statler: Yes, it was. I wonder if they meant it that way.
