Recap / The Muppet Show S 1 E 23

Go To

Kaye Ballard guest stars. Meanwhile, the Electric Mayhem, sick of performing the "embarrassingly square" theme song, announces they're quitting the show.

Songs and Sketches

  • "In The Summertime"
  • "Oh Babe What Would You Say"
  • Muppet Newsflash: Mrs. Gretchen Powers tries to break the record for world's longest sentence.
  • At The Dance
  • UK Spot: "Life Gets Teejus Don't it"
  • Talk Spot: Kaye attempts negotiate on Kermit's behalf.
  • A monster gets a haircut.
  • Vendaface
  • "One Note Samba"

This episode has examples of

  • Aggressive Negotiations: Kaye suggests Animal explain his problems to Kermit about the band's situation. Animal beats the stuffing out of Kermit, leaving him Squashed Flat.
  • The Alleged House: The UK spot has a lazy redneck reciting a poem called "Life Gets Teejus Don't It". Apparently unwilling or unable to work, he's poor to the point where he's out of food, has no presentable clothes, and his house is in terrible disrepair. In his own words: "Tinnote  roof leaks, chimney leans..." His house literally falls apart at the end of the sketch.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Just hearing the theme makes Animal bite Kaye.
    • At the end of the show, Kaye makes a "hog" remark about Piggy, who then does what she does.
  • Consummate Professional: Nigel steadfastly does his job of conducting the end credits even though Rowlf is the only one left playing.
  • Couch Gag: Fozzie tries telling a joke about a fat pig, but Ms. Piggy is nearby and attacks him.
  • Credits Gag: Due to the band refusing to play the theme song anymore, it's just Rowlf playing the piano while Nigel conducts.
  • Motor Mouth: One Muppet Newsflash has Kaye play a woman going for the record of world's longest sentence, and a video is shown of her talking very quickly.
  • Negative Continuity: Despite the band quitting in this episode, they're back in the next episode as if no conflict ever happened.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: When Kermit first asks Animal if he likes the show's theme, he initially agrees, until Floyd tells him he doesn't.
  • The Prima Donna: Piggy tries upstaging Kaye during "One Note Samba".
  • Suddenly Speaking: The trumpet lady from the orchestra utters her first and only line in this episode. She also vocalises with the rest of the band when they play Floyd's proposed new theme song.
  • True Art Is Incomprehensible: Floyd tells Kermit that the band won't quit after all... if Floyd is allowed to write the new theme song.
Kermit: Oh, well, that'll be fine with me.
    Floyd: No, it won't, man.
    Kermit: Uh, why not?
Floyd: You'll hate my music. You won't understand it.
Kermit: Now, listen here. I'm pretty hip too, you know.
Floyd: Not hip enough. Nobody understands my music. I mean, I don't even understand it.
    Kermit: You don't?
    Floyd: If I didn't know I was a genius, I wouldn't listen to the trash I write.
Kermit: Gee, I can hardly wait to hear it.

[Rowlf, the only musician left in the orchestra pit, is playing the closing theme on piano as Nigel conducts.]
Rowlf: Well, you must admit, Nigel, this does sound a little square.
Nigel: Play, hound, play!
