Recap / The Loud House S 3 E 1 Tripped

Go To

The Louds have worked hard to save for the family vacation. But as they drive to their destination, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong.

"Tripped!"

  • Ace Pilot: Rita flies the plane that the family finds, and she's shown to be really good at it, thanks to Pop-Pop teaching her how to use one.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Luan suggests Lori fly the plane they found:
Luan: She's been crop-dusting us all day!
The Loud Family (except Lori): (bursts out laughing)
  • The Alleged Car: Vanzilla, per usual. When the Louds reclaim Vanzilla and use it to finally make it to the hotel, the tires are busted and the entire top half of Vanzilla is lost.
  • Battle of the Bands: After losing Vanzilla, and both Mr. Loud’s wallet and Mrs. Loud’s purse along with it, the Louds are forced to participate in an open mic contest to try and win some cash for the bus. It works.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Rita borrows her father's once Lily spots Vanzilla in the car hauling truck. "Let's take it to 'em!"
  • Bottomless Fuel Tanks: Averted. After the Louds get Vanzilla back, their biplane is stolen by the prisoner they accidentally helped escape earlier. However, it runs out of fuel and crashes, right into the prison.
  • Bystander Syndrome: When the Louds attempt to hitch a ride, nobody will stop for them. This is justified, however, because, as Lisa points out, no one would be able to fit an additional 13 passengers into their car.
  • Chase Scene: Between the Louds in their biplane, and the truck that Vanzilla accidentally ended up on. The reason the driver tries to lose them is because he broke the speed limit and fears the Louds are the police.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Lynn Sr., who brought his cowbell, and Luna who is capable of composing on the fly so they could enter the open mic contest.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Even though they are already behind on schedule, Mrs. Loud insists the family stops to help a farmer with a flat tire. This turns out to be a good thing since the farmer was also on his way to the same hotel, and pays back the Louds for their help by letting them stay in the rooms he rented (the entire top floor of the hotel) after they arrive too late to claim their own rooms.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Contrived Coincidence: Just when it seems the Louds are stranded without any form of transportation, Lana finds an abandoned biplane, of all things, on the side of the road, and fixes it up again.
  • Dance Line: The Louds collectively form a conga line in order to celebrate having enough money for a vacation.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The Louds manage to have a great vacation, though they went through hell to get it.
  • Expansion Pack Past: Mrs. Loud reveals unforeseen piano skills, and later, that Pop Pop taught her to fly a plane.
  • Gasshole: Lori was snacking on low-calorie bean chips during the road trip. She then mentions that her chips contained a high amount of fiber, leading to her slipping a noxious fart inside Vanzilla less than a moment later. Unfortunately for everyone, Lynn Sr. had a rule prior to that to keep Vanzilla's windows closed. He very quickly changes his mind after Lori's flatulence overwhelms the entire family, which is after Lori tried blaming her seat for it.
  • Gasoline Lasts Forever: The plane that the Louds find after losing Vanzilla has clearly been abandoned for some time, but the fuel in its tank is still perfectly usable.
  • Good News, Bad News: When the door of Vanzilla falls off:
Lana: The good news is, the crash made the windows go back up. The bad news is, now we have no door. No way I can re-attach this baby.
  • Good Parents: Played straight and inverted.
    • Inverted: Rita repeatedly forgetting Lily (and in one case, Luna).
    • Played straight: Rita insists on helping "Farmer Speedy" because it's kind and she wants to set a better example for her winning-obsessed child Lynn Jr. This ends up working out to the family's advantage when they meet the farmer again at their resort.
  • Green Around the Gills: All the Louds when the egg salad sandwiches, which Leni made weeks before the trip, make them sick.
  • Hard-Work Montage: The flashbacks of the Loud family each raising money for the vacation, in their own way:
    • Lola and Lana ran a lemonade stand (and Lola made sure they got customers).
    • Luna busked in front of the house (to Mr Grouse's annoyance)
    • Lori and Lynn Sr. ran a food truck.
    • Rita worked overtime at the dentist (and nearly fell asleep on a patient in process).
    • Leni gave out fashion advice.
    • Lynn shoveled snow out of driveways (while offering furniture moving and jar opening services).
    • Luan performed at birthday parties.
    • Lucy held funeral services for pets.
    • Lincoln delivered newspapers (though he didn't get much money due to causing damage to public property).
    • Lisa performed dances with Lily providing music.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: The Louds immediately rush to a gas station to hurl when they realize they ate expired egg salad sandwiches.
  • Ignored Expert: Mr. Loud ignores Lisa’s warnings about driving Vanzilla down a hill at top speed, and just like she predicted, they crash.
  • Instant Illness: Inverted. The Louds all simultaneously eat their sandwiches so it's no surprise they all got sick within moments of each other. But all it took was them pulling over at a gas station to throw up, and they were all fine again. Traveling at the Speed of Plot helped here.
  • Lethal Chef: Leni. The family all compliment how tasty the egg salad sandwiches were. Unfortunately, Leni, in her excitement, made them weeks before their trip; so the sandwiches give them food poisoning. The family hastily relieves her of any food related duties going forward.
  • Lots of Luggage: Even for a family of 13. Luna brought a bass drum and high hats, Lucy brings her coffin and Lynn Sr. packs an enormous bag with nothing but puzzles. Lisa's ability to play Luggage Tetris saves the day.
  • Luminescent Blush: Lori is shown with a aggressive one when Vanzilla's windows are opened to air itself out from her overwhelming flatulence.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: When the Louds stop to help a farmer, Mr. Loud accidentally puts Vanzilla in reverse and the car rolls down a hill, onto a truck. By the time the Louds notice their mistake, both the truck and Vanzilla are gone. This is ultimately subverted, however, as the farmer shows up at the hotel, and books the whole first floor for the Louds.
  • Oh, Crap!:
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten:
  • Overturned Outhouse: Mr. Loud rams a line of portable toilets with Vanzilla, and they topple over like dominoes. Turns out the last one was occupied.
  • Overworked Sleep: Mrs. Loud started working overtime to raise money for the vacation, causing her to fall asleep on top of a patient.
  • Race Against the Clock: The hotel the Louds are going to has a very strict check in policy. If the Louds don’t make it there before 8, they risk their rooms being given to someone else. They ultimately fail to make it.
  • Running Gag:
    • Mrs. Loud almost forgetting Lily.
    • One of the Louds (specifically Lisa and Lana) fixing a problem in no time, being asked by the others how they did it, and going into a detailed explanation only to be cut off when the others lose interest and get back in Vanzilla.
  • Secretly Wealthy: The farmer the Louds keep running into and at one point even help out is eventually revealed to be Jerry Kling, the Cherry King.
  • Shout-Out/Homage:
    • As a reply to Mr. Grouse paying her to stop playing her music, Luna says "Vacation, all I ever wanted".
    • Home Alone: The youngest child is forgotten in the hubbub of preparing a huge family to leave for vacation. Unlike with Kevin, however, Rita remembers Lily at the last second.
    • Adventures in Babysitting: The Louds end up singing the blues in order to be able to continue their adventures.
    • The escaped prisoner said this well-known line from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney) before landing in prison: "I'm free! Dang it."
    • One low angle shot of Mrs. Loud piloting the plane is based on an iconic scene in Porco Rosso of its titular character being shown at a similar angle.
    • To Cherry 2000: The license number on Jerry Kling the Cherry King's truck is CHRY2K.
  • Toilet Humour:
    • Mr. Loud rams a line of portable toilets with Vanzilla, and they topple over like dominoes. Turns out the last one was occupied.
    • Lana goes to do some business behind some bushes later in the episode. When Lana says "you guys gotta see this", Rita thinks Lana wants to show the family her "mess". Lana proves that wrong immediately by saying that she found "[their] ticket out of here" (a crop duster), though Lana does warn the others not to step in the "mess" (which is very likely to be the remnants of the cherries she ate earlier). The fact that Lana does not bury her droppings as is conventionally done when doing business outdoors is another major character-defining moment for her.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: When the family gets sick from eating weeks-old egg salad sandwiches (sans Lily, who didn't get one), they immediately rush to a gas station to hurl. Luna doesn't make it to the bathroom, so she does it behind the building. Lola does make it, but after seeing that all the toilets have been taken by her family, she rushes off-screen to vomit elsewhere outside. And Lana completely avoids the bathroom (possibly for the same reason as Lola) and rushes to hurl off-screen outside as well.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: Happens to Lola due to the heat inside Vanzilla; its air condition was broken.
