Recap / The Lion Guard S 3 E 11 The Tree Of Life

Go To

Kion and the Lion Guard finally arrive at the Tree of Life. Though they run into some trouble when they meet the protectors of the tree, the Night Pride.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Crime of Self-Defense: The whole conflict between the Lion and Guard and Night Pride was kicked off by Baliyo throwing the first punch and Kion using the Roar on him in frustration, which leads to Rani turning them away without allowing them to clear up the situation.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Though she does eventually allow them to come to the Tree of Life, the next episode makes it clear that Rani is still distrustful of the Lion Guard, especially when she finds out they were unwittingly followed by Makucha and his gang.
  • Heroic BSoD: Kion falls into one when he and the rest of the Lion Guard are denied entrance to the Tree of Life by Rani.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Non-lethal example. Kion states that he's willing to accept not being welcomed to the Tree of Life if it means allowing Ono to get his eyes healed since he wasn't involved in the fight that started the whole mess. Seeing Kion put his friend's wellbeing above his own is what convinces the Night Pride to allow the Lion Guard entry to the Tree.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: People may find Rani denying the Lion Guard entrance to the Tree of Life to be too harsh, considering that it was Baliyo's own fault for causing the whole misunderstanding that led to Kion using the Roar on him. But until she spoke with her grandmother, she had no idea about the Roar of the Elders or what it even was, and was clearly very worried for her brother's safety after seeing him get blown away. Kion's aggressive attitude beforehand also didn't help, either.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: After being blown away by the Roar, Baliyo suffers only a concussion but is otherwise unharmed.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Bunga attempting to reach a beehive on an unstable rock wall at the pass's entrance results in a rockslide caving in on the entrance and the protectors of the Tree of Life taking this as an attack on their turf, not helped by Kion's literally ill temper. The Guard ends up not being welcomed at the Tree of Life and has to earn the Night Pride's trust.
  • Not Helping Your Case: While Fuli tries to explain to Rani that the Guard doesn't mean any harm, Kion gets frustrated while fighting Baliyo and says that "[he] won't let anything get in their way to the Tree of Life" before using the Roar to blow him away. Predictably, Rani isn't convinced.
  • Rejected Apology: Rani rejects the Lion Guard's attempt at apologizing and explaining the situation and tells them to stay away from the Tree of Life. Fortunately, she changes her mind after talking with her grandmother and deceased parents.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Rani gives one to the Lion Guard, saying that if they're supposedly good guys, then them blocking the pass and intentionally using a dangerous superpower on her little brother that could have gotten him seriously hurt or killed provides evidence to the contrary.
    • Kion chews out Bunga for not listening to him about not pursuing the beehive, since it not only blocked the entrance to the pass, but also ruined their first impression with the Night Pride.
