Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 25 Beshte And The Beast

Go To

A gorilla warrior named Shujaa comes to help the Lion Guard in the battle against Scar.

  • Animals Not to Scale: Shujaa is way too large for a gorilla, comparable in size to hippos and rhinos. This is something typical for cartoon gorillas.
  • Ax-Crazy: Scar is positively ecstatic when he decides to trick Shujaa into practically destroying the Pride Lands on his own.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Shujaa is a friendly and cheerful fellow who happens to enjoy smashing and crashing.
  • The Bus Came Back: Kifaru makes his second appearance after "Ono the Tickbird". Without Mwenzi, due to having given him the day-off.
  • Catchphrase: "Shujaa Ponda", which can be translated as "Shujaa Smash".
  • Clothing Appendage: Shujaa's sagittal crest has a pattern of dark and light fur resembling a headdress worn by warriors in a number of African tribes, befitting his name. Furthermore, he has silvery fur on his legs that resemble a pair of shorts, perhaps as a subtle nod to The Incredible Hulk.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • King Sokwe has heard of the war in the Pride Lands, hence why he sent Shujaa.
    • Just like Bunga, Chungu mistakes a gorilla for a big baboon.
  • Dark Reprise: "Shujaa Ponda" gets a sad one, where the giant gorilla laments about how much destruction his strength causes.
  • Destructive Savior: The main theme of the episode. Shujaa wants to help the Pridelanders, but he causes lots of damage while doing so.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Shujaa is aware that he's really strong - what he isn't aware of is how much destruction it causes.
  • Dumb Muscle: Shujaa is not the brightest gorilla around.
  • Gentle Giant: Although Shujaa has trouble controlling his strength, he's generally friendly and well-meaning.
  • Heroic BSoD: Shujaa when he unintentionally destroys the home of two rock hyraxes and starts believing all his strength does is cause destruction.
  • Hulk Speak: Shujaa speaks like this. His Catchphrase, "Shujaa Ponda" can even be translated as "Shujaa Smash".
  • "I Am Great!" Song: The first rendition of "Shujaa Ponda", in which Shujaa boasts about his great strength.
  • Killer Gorilla: In his first scene, Shujaa seems to be one of these, chasing away a herd of zebras and giraffes from the watering hole. As the Lion Guard get ready to fight him, he reveals that he is actually quite friendly, and came to help the Lion Guard and believed that the zebras and giraffes were the enemies. He causes a lot of destruction later in the episode, but it is either accidental or targeted at Scar's minions.
  • Meaningful Name: "Shujaa" means "warrior" or "hero", fitting for a heroic gorilla who is incredibly strong and good at fighting.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Shujaa has one when he punches a hole through a rock wall so that Kifaru can go through, destroying a hyrax's home in the process, resulting in a Heroic BSoD.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Shujaa causes heavy damage to the Pride Lands practically every few minutes. After hearing of Shujaa’s strength, Scar decides to deliberately exploit this trope, and orders more attacks so that Shujaa will continue wreaking havoc on the Pride Lands, doing Scar’s work for him.
  • Primal Chest-Pound: Shujaa does one during the first rendition of "Shujaa Ponda", and again at the start of his first battle with Scar's minions. He does it with his fists instead of his palms, which is also typical of fictional gorillas.
  • Third-Person Person: Shujaa rarely refers to himself in the first person.
