Recap / The Librarians S 4 E 03 And The Christmas Thief

Go To

Santa Claus takes Flynn, Eve, and Jenkins on a vacation with him, leaving his sleigh in the Library for safekeeping. Meanwhile, Ezekiel visits his family of small-time thieves to celebrate Thankstaking.

Tropes

  • Beard of Evil: The Saint of Thieves sports a narrow white beard, even though the rest of his hair is dark.
  • Bedsheet Ghost: Cassandra uses Flynn's mirror trick to pretend to be the "Ghost of the Christmas Future" to Ezekiel's sisters in order to obtain their help. Later on, the sisters come down and see Cassandra in the flesh, causing them to scream and run back upstairs.
  • Beneath the Mask: The Saint of Thieves turns out to be nothing more than a petulant little boy, trying to one-up his brother, Santa Claus.
  • Call-Back: Jacob shows off the martial arts skills he picked up in "And the Fatal Separation" by effortlessly beating up a group of guards.
  • Compelling Voice: The Saint of Thieves is able to compel Lenore to spill the beans about Ezekiel and the sleigh with a deep voice. It's implied that it only works on thieves.
  • Decomposite Character: The idea of Santa's brother being the Saint of Thieves appears to be loosely based on St Nicholas being the patron of penitent thieves.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: While Ezekiel is no longer a criminal, this trope still applies, especially when the head of the Bank of Thieves tells his mother that she's nothing. Ezekiel nearly flies off the handle.
  • Fictional Holiday: Thieves all over the world celebrate Thankstaking around Christmas time. The main difference is that they give each other gifts with price tags still attached, proving that they have been stolen. The tags of good gifts are placed under the picture of the Saint of Thieves. Ezekiel's mother and sisters are shocked when he gifts his mother something he bought.
  • Gratuitous Russian: Jacob is able to use his knowledge of the language to distract a Russian mobster.
  • Happily Adopted: While they have their ups and downs, Ezekiel genuinely loves Lenore for taking him in and raising him as her own.
  • Honor Among Thieves: The Bank's clients are encouraged to behave and treat one another with respect. It doesn't always work.
  • Horrible Vacation: Neither Eve nor Jenkins enjoy the vacation. Even Flynn admits it was too much. Guess they forgot how much Santa/Odin loves to party.
  • It Runs in the Family: It turns out Ezekiel didn't randomly become a thief. His adoptive mother is a petty thief, who taught all her children the trade. Ezekiel simply took it to the next level, not that his family would know it, considering him a failure.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: Ezekiel eventually reveals to his mother why, despite being called the greatest thief in the world, he isn't super-rich. He has been using the stolen loot to help the needy, redistributing wealth from those who earned it unfairly to those who got unlucky.
  • Laser Hallway: The vault in the Bank of Evil is protected by one. Ezekiel has to backflip through it to return the painting.
  • Morton's Fork: Thanks to Jenkins arriving to deliver Santa's letter, in which he freely gifts his sleigh to his brother, along with the deed to said sleigh, the villain of the week is unable to enact his plan, as his very nature makes accepting what has been given freely impossible.
  • Mugging the Monster: Ezekiel is horrified when he learns that his mother stole Johannes Vermeer's painting The Concert from the head of the Bank of Thieves, knowing that he doesn't forgive anyone taking from him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Ezekiel gets sick of his mother always telling him how terrible a thief he is, so he takes her to the Library, resulting in her taking the Backdoor and going on a stealing spree across the world. On the other hand, Ezekiel taking the sleigh to return the gifts with his mother ends up topping off the sleigh's Christmas cheer meter, which was almost empty at the beginning. Lenore also gets a Heel–Face Turn realizing how much she enjoyed giving to others more than stealing, and now she and Ezekiel are also on better terms than they were at the start.
  • Sibling Rivalry:
    • This appears to be the main reason why the Saint of Thieves wants Santa's sleigh. He wants to end Christmas to get back at his brother.
    • Ezekiel and his sisters seem to have a fairly strong one, if their reaction when he shows up is anything to go by.
  • Trrrilling Rrrs: The Saint of Thieves speaks in this manner. Steven Weber at his hammiest.
  • True Meaning of Christmas: Lenore eventually learns that giving is better than taking and is saddened that she and Ezekiel have given away all the gifts she stole. She wants to give more.
  • We Need a Distraction: Ezekiel steals a Russian mobster's wallet and makes it look like a Chinese Triad member took it. The resulting fight distracts the Bank's guards long enough for Ezekiel and Lenore to slip through the door to the vault.
  • Welcome to Evil Mart/Wretched Hive: The Bank of Evil is an underground facility, where any thief can leave his or her stolen loot without fear of it being taken by anyone. Anyone attempting to steal at the Bank or defraud the bankers is considered a bad asset and "liquidated". The entrance to the Bank is an innocuous old man in a park with a chessboard. The chess moves (completely illogical from the viewpoint of the game) turn out to be the entrance code. In the Bank's basement, the Librarians find members of organized crime from all over the world. The Bank turns out to be run by the Saint of Thieves himself.
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: Lenore complains about Ezekiel giving her an egg one year for Thankstaking Day. Ezekiel points out that it was a Faberge egg. While going through the Thieves Bank, they overhear another thief depositing a Faberge egg and its estimated value. When Lenore tells him that he should've told her how much it was worth, he points out that she could have easily Googled it.
