El Toro is the fifth episode of The Last Ship's first season.
Dr. Scott is ready to start testing a vaccine prototype and requires monkeys to conduct animal trials.
Heading to a monkey reserve, the crew discovers that it's not a viable option as it's being used as a refuge by people infected by the virus. Chandler sends Scott back to the ship while he, XO Slattery, and some others head deeper into the jungle. There, they run into El Toro, a vicious drug lord who's carved out his own fiefdom and is using the girls under his control as sex slaves.
- Asshole Victim: Of course, El Toro.
- Karmic Death: El Toro is stabbed to death with his own knife after throwing it down while taunting Chandler about the Navy's unwillingness to kill him. The man who does the deed is the father of a girl who El Toro raped and later sent into the wilderness.
- Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: El Toro's exploitation of the girls in his camp sends the expedition, particularly, Slattery into a fury and the sailors come back to stop him once and for all.
- Tranquil Fury: Slattery is seething because El Toro is raping young girls and Danny is eager to go back and take down the drug lord and his gang. Chandler, on the other hand, is coldly calculating in how he wants to take down El Toro.
- You Are in Command Now: Chief Engineer Garnett is left in charge of Nathan James while both the Captain and XO are off looking for monkeys.
