Recap / The Interns S 7 E 17

Go To

Today is Lobanov's birthday... the first birthday without Olga. He would prefer if Gleb would not speak about it near him. But now everyone "congratulates" him (either genuinely or mockingly): Bykov, Lyuba, Varya, Phil and finally Kupitman. While he's busy working, Olga remembers about their tradition: she always gifted Semyon with home-breed breakfast with secret message addressed to him, which awakes the memories of good old times. Meanwhile, Gleb organises everyone to provide Lobanov with a real party for once (all their previous attempts to "gift" him resulted in fiasco). In the end, Olga even visits Semyon in his apartment, alone, dressed only in a new shirt she prepared for Semyon. This results in... you know. It seems that his friends' party would go without him.

Varya is unsure how her relationship with David would proceed now. She asks Lyuba, Kisegach and then Bykov what to do, and all of them tells her to just ask David directly; she rejects Lyuba because she "had only very simple men, while David is special", rejects Kisegach because she is "too old to be competent in such questions", and Bykov just tells her that he doesn't give a crap (but she still may try and ask David directly). Then she asks Kupitman, who tells her a story of his first love. Despite the message being pretty obvious, she still doesn't get it, and Kupitman also has to tell her to just go and ask David directly. This ends when David confronts Varya first: he's not happy with her bragging about their relationship to everyone, especially since people now annoys him by trying to "teach" him how to treat Varya. He nearly dumps her, but gives her a second chance.

Lyuba suspects that Phil's patient is... an evil sorcerer. After talking with him a little, Phil starts suspecting that this is indeed the case; especially because he started suffering from bad luck after provoking his ire. But once Bykov visits him, he learns that this guy is just some eccentric artist (who doesn't even believe in magic). Which means that yes, Phil is just unlucky today. Patient later pretends to be a sorcerer for real (which scares Lyuba), just to punish her for messing with Phil... and it's when Phil's good luck returns to him, which he attributes to "sorcerer" being merciful.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Birthday Hater: Today is Semyon's first birthday without Olga... and anything that reminds him about it only ruins his mood further. For this reason, he doesn't want to celebrate it, or even speak about it. But now everyone "congratulates" him (either genuinely or mockingly): Bykov, Lyuba, Varya, Phil, and then Kupitman. But in the end, he gets congratulated by... Olga, who repeats her traditional gift, home-breed breakfast (or, in this case, dinner).
  • Blatant Lies: When pretending to be a sorcerer, the patient claims that alcohol somehow helps him control his evil. Lyuba falls for it.
  • Contrived Coincidence: It just so happened that Phil manages to repair his phone and learn that his father (one of them) was not, really, seriously injured right after Lyuba fulfills the "sorcerer's" request for alcohol (he claimed that it helps him to control his evil force).
  • Convenience Store Gift Shopping: Everyone who learns about Lobanov's birthday, gifts him... a new pen. He pretends to like it, despite it actually being irritating past certain number of pens gifted. The only ones who differs are Bykov (who "gifts" him with angrily-written order, and a threat to punish him with a night shift if he screws up), and Kupitman (who gifts him cognac — and then drinks it himself when Semyon can't accept it due to having a job to do).
  • Eccentric Artist: The "evil sorcerer" with sinister speech manner and creepy look turns out to be simply a rather eccentric artist who acts like this out of habit, but doesn't actually believe in magic.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Phil's patient is suspected to be an evil sorcerer, which starts his plot:
    • Lyuba suspects that Phil's patient may be a sorcerer, and that he may inflict a curse on somebody he doesn't like with his weird eye. Due to the guy's speech manner, Phil starts suspecting that it may indeed be the case, and suggest to call Bykov. In truth, he is just an Eccentric Artist (and considers Lyuba to be crazy for believing in magic).
    • To punish Lyuba for starting all this mess, the patient later pretends to be a sorcerer for real, and scares her. That, and to receive free alcohol.
  • I Have This Friend: Kupitman's story is pretty clearly about his first love, despite him claiming that it's some of his friends. He even slips once, by mentioning his own name and quickly correcting himself.
  • Lethally Stupid: Lyuba, due to her beliefs in magic, falls for "sorcerer's" claims that he uses vodka to control his magic; unfortunately, his medicine is incompatible with alcohol, and he now has a serious poisoning. What's strange is that, unlike interns (who commits that kind of idiocy on regular basis), she has many years of experience and should've known better.
  • Magical Incantation: One of the factors why the patient gets mistaken for sorcerer is his weird speech manner which resembles him saying some curse; Lyuba certainly interprets it as such.
  • Overly Long Gag:
    • Everyone after Bykov (who uses Semyon's birthday just as excuse to slightly differ his insult) "gifts" Lobanov with a pen; he pretends to like it despite it quickly ceasing to be funny. When Kupitman shows up, Semyon preemptively asks him whether he's gonna gift a pen, too; but Kupitman has more adequate gift, a bottle of cognac... which he later drinks by himself, cause Lobanov has the job to do, while Kupitman can't hold himself for long near alcohol.
    • David quickly gets irritated by everyone teaching him what to do with Varya, to the point he snaps and shouts on the last one who tries.
  • Relationship Upgrade: This happened, but Varya has no idea how to interact with David now, or even their current status — are they Friends with Benefits, actual couple or it was just accidental and nothing special. Everyone whom she asks suggests her to just ask David directly, but she always manages to find excuses to reject their advices. Ironically, in the end, David calls Varya out on telling everybody, because everyone she asked for advice later tried to teach him how to interact with her, to his irritation. He almost dumps her here and now after that.
  • Sex with the Ex: Olga still has feelings to Semyon, and in the end "gifts" him a night of love. Unquestionably, the best gift that day (especially amongst all those pens)!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Varya asking everyone for advice regarding her relationship with David results in everyone giving David advices regarding that relationship. David thinks that Varya is bragging about sleeping with him, and calls her out on it. He almost dumps her, but gives her a second chance after all.
