Recap / The Interns S 4 E 12

Go To

Kisegach is extremely cold to Bykov after him cheating on her. She even refused to pay him his bonus money. Meanwhile, Phil learns about a labor codex violations, and decides to organise a strike. Bykov learns about Phil's strike attempt, and decides to use it in his favour. But once he persuades Kisegach into paying him his money, he immediately betrays Phil and forces the strike to end (by lying that he was fired, and same fate awaits anyone who would try, which forces everyone to abandon Phil). After that, Bykov finally explains to Phil that his attempt to organise a strike was not that good idea after all, because in attempt to fight for his own rights, he forgot about his patient; what kind of doctor he is after that?

Varya must once again work under Kupitman... and she's ready to do anything, up to and including doing his chores, to avoid actual venereology-related work — because she is deeply afraid of it. Kupitman considers this to be an anomaly, and any medical anomaly must be treated. Unfortunately, the problem becomes worse when Varya notices some acne, and decides that she is now infected... and attempts to "cure" it with various drugs only makes the situation worse.

Gleb and Semyon suddenly realises that their new patient is actually their neighbour, with whom they already had many conflicts before. They have many, many options for revenge... but can't decide on just one. This becomes irrelevant once she gets discharged from the hospital. Strangely, but after that she actually becomes a lot nicer, since she realised that they are actually doctors, not two marginals.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Apathetic Citizens: Phil learns about Russian indifference to labor codex violations (specifically, tendencies to overwork people without paying them extra, though he quickly finds more issues), and decides to organise a strike. Once people learns that they could actually learn more if they win, they supports him. Bykov, who previously had problems with Kisegach over their breakup, decides to use this situation against her. But once Bykov earns his money, he immediately betrays his "allies", by lying that he was fired, and same fate awaits anyone who wouldn't give up now, which scares off all Phil's supporters (despite Phil's claims that firing them like this is illegal too, and they must sue Kisegach).
  • Compressed Vice: Varya is extremely afraid of catching something while working under Kupitman — despite her being a medic, and it being not even the first time she has to work under him. Once the episode ends, that fear gets forgotten and wouldn't be ever referenced again.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: Phil learns that being a doctor sometimes requires to just suck up and do your job first, and lament unfair conditions later: when you're a doctor, the other people depends on you, and you can't just tell them "sorry, I'm busy striking, so your pneumonia can wait".
  • Heel–Face Turn: Gleb's and Semyon's patient is their extremely unpleasant and suspicious neighbour, whom they hate. She suddenly becomes nicer once she gets discharged from the hospital, solely for two reasons: because they are doctors (she thought that they are marginals), and because they didn't take advantage of the situation to take revenge on her, and even gifts them with a cake. Though they don't believe in this, and wonders wether the cake can be poisoned. We never learn the truth.
  • Jerkass: Gleb's and Semyon's neighbour is a grumpy and rude old woman, who constantly bothers them for dubious reasons. Once she even called police, because she think that they are vandalising the elevator (why them, of all people?). Though their ideas for "revenge" on her are moronic at best and outright criminal at worst (they never follows with any of them, though). She gets better in the end... presumably.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Still angry at Bykov after he cheated on her, Kisegach started acting like this to him, and him alone; he can only meet her at the very specific time, has only ten minutes to explain what he needs, and he is specifically the only one who didn't receive a money bonus.
  • Sanity Slippage: The longer Varya's fear of germs goes, the more insane her behaviour becomes. Ultimately she becomes outright hysterical, and starts blindly taking various drugs in attempt to "cure" the "infection", unaware that it's simple acne. Predictably, it causes allergic reaction, which makes the acne stronger — as well as Varya's panic. Kupitman snaps her out of it by publicly humiliating her, which makes the shame suppress her fear.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Bykov joins Phil's strike against labor codex violations, but once he stays alone with Kisegach, he immediately makes it clear that his only reason for this was to receive his bonus money. Once he gets them, he forces everyone to end their strike immediately. But after that, Bykov explains to Phil that medics must prioritise their patients' well-being before anything else, otherwise the patients would die, due to their doctors being busy attempting to win more goods for themselves. Then he asks Phil about his patient, and Phil has nothing to answer: he doesn't know. Bykov also mentions that according to that same "labor codex", he can simply fire Phil for that, but instead would just punish him with a night shift.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: After every other revenge idea against their Cranky Neighbor proves to be too insane (or criminal) to work, Gleb and Semyon decides to just imitate her own behaviour. But before they manages to proceed with it, they realises that she was already discharged from the hospital.
  • Terrified of Germs: For whatever reason, Varya becomes dreadfully afraid of catching disease from Kupitman's patients; it wouldn't come into play ever again after this episode.
    • Varya must work under Kupitman, but she's extremely afraid to catch something from his patients. This surprises Kupitman, who outright asks her why she chose medicine in the first place if she's so afraid of getting infected. She barely manages to do her work after that, but then she makes a mistake of grabbing a plush toy hare... unaware that it belongs to a little girl with skin disease. Without gloves. Fortunately, the girl's disease is not contagious.
    • Some time after leaving Kupitman, Varya notices some acne, and decides that she was infected by that girl anyway. Not even Kupitman manages to convince her otherwise, and situation quickly escalates to near insanity. She also takes several drugs in attempt to "cure" herself, which predictably makes the situation worse. Kupitman only snaps her out of it when he humiliates her before the other patients, and shame overwhelms fear. Unfortunately, now she must treat all those patients as a punishment.
  • Woman Scorned: Kisegach still can't forgive Bykov for his infidelity, and decides to use her position as the Chief Doctor to make his life a living hell.
