Recap / The Interns S 1 E 16

Go To

Varya's finds a woman crying: she was robbed, stealing her last money. Varya decides to help her and give her own money, saying that she just "found" her lost banknote, but the patient assumes that Varya just stole it, as the patient "clearly" wasn't where Varya has found it. Varya decides to put her money into patient's bag, so patient would see that she wasn't robbed, and apologise. But then Lyuba gives her another banknote (subtly, to make her think that she'd found it herself), so Varya tries to take the money back... and gets busted mid-process, with predictable results.

Lobanov's new patient turns out to be a trans woman, which squicks Lobanov to no end. But Bykov would not give him another patient, so Semyon must find a way to deal with his squeamishness and do his job. Gleb suggests Lobanov to just get drunk — no sane patient would agree to be treated by non-sober doctor. But instead, this leads to them finally getting along... and getting busted by Olga, who mistakes it for Semyon cheating on her. Lobanov's patient allows him to record her naked body, as a proof that Semyon is innocent, but they gets busted by Bykov mid-process.

Kisegach gets tired of her son's constant unpunctuality, laziness and outright incompetence, and she punishes him by taking away his car keys. He would only receive them back if Bykov would, for once, be satisfied with Gleb's work. Gleb accidentally learns about Levin's affair with Lyuba, and decides to just blackmail Levin into doing his work for him. Unfortunately, Bykov finds out, and punishes Gleb by forcing him to do manual work — clean up the floor. He attempts to blackmail Lyuba, so she would clean it for him, only to learn that she doesn't see anything shameful in her relationship with Levin. Levin, on the other hand... Unfortunately, Lyuba busts Levin cleaning up the floor, and instantly realises the reason for that. Gleb does get his keys back, but then Bykov forces Semyon to show everyone his footage, and Levin, thinking that they're laughing at him and Lyuba, tells that yes, he Lyuba are in relationship! He also accuses Gleb of betrayal, revealing that Gleb did, in fact, cheat, so he doesn't get the keys back after all.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Gleb, when told about Lobanov's patient, starts with "it's the same patient as any other", which Lobanov takes as him siding with "pervert", but Gleb instead means that Semyon can use standard tactics how to get rid of that patient, like getting drunk.
  • Blackmail: Kisegach is tired of Gleb slacking off, so she takes away his car cays until he does something well for once. Gleb, in turn, tries to blackmail Levin and Lyuba into doing the job for him; emphasis on "tries".
  • Blackmail Backfire: Gleb repeatedly tries to blackmail someone into doing his work for him, only to fail every time:
    • Gleb learns about Levin's affair with Lyuba, and uses a recording of them making out to force Levin into doing his work for him. This backfires, as patient reveals to Bykov that he was treated by Levin, and Gleb instead gets publicly humiliated.
    • Gleb volunteers to do some manual work under Lyuba, only to try and blackmail her to work for him, the same way as he did with Levin. This completely fails, since unlike Levin, she doesn't care if anyone would find out. She reacts by kicking the trash can, increasing amount of work Gleb should do.
    • After failing with Lyuba, Gleb recruits Levin to clean the floor for him, but then Levin mistakes everyone laughing for them making fun at him and Lyuba, and accuses Gleb of not fulfilling their agreement, which makes Kisegach take the keys back.
  • Blatant Lies: Levin does the job for Gleb, but has no time to tell him at which ward the patient is before Bykov shows up, so he has to hint him by showing two fingers. Bykov sees it, and Levin (badly) pretends that he's dancing, surprising Bykov. Gleb lies that it's Levin gloating that Gleb has lost his car. Somehow, Bykov falls for it. Then he has to do it again in the ward, to tell which patient Gleb needs; Bykov still believes it, only saying that he has to make Lyuba double-check the drugs. It becomes a moot point, however, as the patient just tells that he was treated by Levin.
  • Buffy Speak: Lobanov's attempt to explain what he just saw sounds almost incomprehensible, even when he actually speak rather than yells:
Lobanov: Andrey Eugenievitch! I would not! Let someone who doesn't care! I do care! I wouldn't even talk to it!
Bykov: Lobanov! Add some information into your angry barking! What happened?
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Kisegach takes away Gleb's car keys, until Bykov compliments his work for once. But instead of doing his work, Gleb spends a whole day on blackmailing Levin and Lyuba into doing his work for him. It backfires on Gleb each time he tries this, for one reason or another. He does get the keys back in the end (for floor cleaning), but then Levin reveals that it was him who did the job, which makes Kisegach take the keys back.
  • Chekhov's Gun: That discussion between Semyon and Olga at the beginning of the episode (about Semyon always spending nights not at home, and her suspecting that he just cheats on her) foreshadows what would happen when Olga sees drunk Lobanov with his trans woman patient.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Gleb's initial plan doesn't account for him obviously knowing nothing about the patient, and patient knowing that he was treated by the other doctor (and having no reason to keep it secret).
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Lobanov gets busted recording his transsexual patient (he needs evidence for Olga that he wasn't cheating on her). The situation is already awkward, but Lobanov tells that it's not for him, it's for wife. Bykov says that now, he really wants to hear the whole story, but quickly changes his mind and just leaves.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even if Bykov doesn't like transsexuals either, it's still a patient, and thus should be treated as patient, personal sympathies and antipathies be damned.
Bykov: Lobanov, did you give some other Hippocratic Oath? Wherever I go, I would go only for the betterment of the patient... unless it's a transvestite? [...] It's the same human as you, just in "non-standard configuration". So go and treat the tax-payer!
  • Exact Words: Gleb gets his keys back (temporarily) because Bykov compliments his floor-cleaning job; it wasn't said that he has to compliment his medical skills.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Gleb's advise to Lobanov how to get rid of his patient involves Lobanov getting drunk (so patient would just demand replacing him). Instead, this leads to them coming along at last... only for Olga to find them and mistake this for Semyon cheating on her; this doesn't even save Semyon from Bykov, as he gets busted while recording an evidence for Olga.
  • Gossipy Hens: Not only the woman accuses Varya of stealing, she tells two other women, whom Lyuba identifies as gossipers and warns that they would make Varya "famous" around entire hospital, unless something gets done quickly.
  • Insistent Terminology: Bykov uses the right term, transsexual, but Lobanov doesn't bother to memorise it and sticks with "transvestite".
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Lyuba learns that Levin is ashamed of their relationship when she finds out that Gleb has blackmailed him by threatening to reveal it.
    • When Levin sees Bykov, Gleb and Kisegach laughing at some video (actually recording of Lobanov's trans woman patient), and angrily yells at them that his and Lyuba's relationship is their personal matter, and they shouldn't laugh at it. Obviously, from now on, their relationship is no longer a secret.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: When Olga sees Lobanov with his patient (a trans woman, with unfinished transition), she takes it as confirmation that he's indeed cheating on her.
  • Mistaken for Thief: Varya's attempt to help her patient (an old woman) to find "her" money only leads to said patient accusing Varya of being a thief... because how otherwise she would find the banknote somewhere where the patient never was? Later, when Varya tries to return the rest of her money which she put in same patient's bag during second attempt to help the patient, she gets busted mid-act, now actually looking like a thief.
  • Not What It Looks Like:
    • Varya's second attempt to help her patient only leads to her being mistaken for thief. Why? Because she decided to put her own money into patient's bag, and when the patient found her original money in the book (actually put there by Lyuba), Varya tries to "steal" her money back... and gets caught during the act.
    • When Olga sees Lobanov with his transsexual patient, she mistakes this for him cheating on her. Lobanov then records the patient's naked body (with patient's permission), so Olya would believe him that this is really not his mistress... only for Bykov to come in. Lobanov attempts to explain that it was not for him, but for his wife, but it only makes the situation even more awkward.
    • At the end of the episode, Bykov plays Lobanov's recording for Gleb and Kisegach to laugh at, only for Levin to see them and mistake it for them laughing at him and Lyuba.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Lyuba put another banknote for the patient, in such a way that she would think that she'd found it herself. This makes Varya putting money into bag unnecessary, but Varya only learns this after doing so... and makes the worst thing possible — tries to take the extra money back, which unsurprisingly leads to her getting busted.
  • Relationship Upgrade: When Levin announces that yes, he's dating Lyuba, he officially confirms it as the actual relationship; previously, it was little more than affair. This is also the first time when Levin actually shows that he does care about it going on; not long ago, he was willing to end it.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: The woman whom Varya tries to help wasn't robbed; she just can't remember where she puts her money, as she has sclerosis.
  • The Slacker: Gleb's plot gets kickstarted by his mother growing tired of him being chronically late (to the point that he's two hours late for that discussion), and slacking off whenever he does show up at the hospital after all; he must somehow earn Bykov's approval today.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Gleb suggest Semyon to get drunk, so his patient would just refuse him. The patient instead opens up to Lobanov, which makes them come along when they show a similarity of interests... and leads to them being busted by Olga, causing Semyon even worse problems than whatever he had from Bykov.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Bykov just told Kisegach that Gleb is the same idiot he always is, but today, Lobanov surpassed him, by recording this weird footage (for his wife, no less). Then he learns how Levin was blackmailed into doing the work for Gleb (and hears Levin's weird confession), which he finds even more idiotic. Then he learns that Varya got accused of stealing money. At this point, he just asks what sin he commit to deserve all this.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal: Lobanov's patient, Alexandra Bondarenko, reveals that she has prostatitis. Once Lobanov realises that it's not a joke, he rushes to Bykov, screaming incoherently that he wants nothing to do near his "transvestite" patient. Bykov tells him that it's transsexual, and forces to finish the job. After taking some alcohol, Lobanov somehow overcomes his homophobia and comes along with patient just fine (though he doesn't bother with learning the term Bykov told him, sticking to "transvestite").
