Recap / The Interns S 13 E 20

Go To

It's the last day before wedding — and Kisegach is nervous due to it, to the point that she can't hold her tears: she fears that Gleb would distance from her after that, and that it would be point of no return for her bond with her son. Unfortunately, today is another meeting of all Heads of the hospital, and she must attend it as the Chief Doctor. Kisegach almost manages to concentrate on work, but Kupitman, surprised that she didn't cancel that meeting, reminds her that with things like the wedding of her son and his niece, they have more important things to think about, and can postpone it a little. This snaps her back into her neurotic conditions, and to calm her down, Kupitman has to give her some of his cognac — but it doesn't work, and when Gleb visits her to personally invite on his wedding, she starts crying: she just wants to look on him for the "last time"! What "last time"? She can't explain. Gleb, worrying about his mother, asks Bykov and Kupitman whether they knows anything. Kupitman then mentions that he gave her some cognac, and Bykov realises how ugly this may end, and rushes to prevent the meeting before it's too late. Unfortunately, it already is. Kisegach has started the meeting, but the other doctors, due to not being informed, accidentally provokes her with poorly-chosen metaphors and idioms (always, in one way or another, related to either the marriage, or someone leaving), which makes her slip into neurosis again. Then one guy, who was late due to traffic jam, mentions registry office, which works as the last straw, and Kisegach runs away in tears. Bykov comes after this, and, when asked, just tells them that they caused this by their "bad performance". Bykov and Kupitman manages to catch Kisegach. She finally agrees with them that it was a bad idea to go on the work today, since she was in not nearly as good condition as she thought. Bykov suggests that if she really needs to cry, better do it now, so she may finally get a hold on herself and be in adequate condition tomorrow. When Gleb tries to enter, Kupitman with hand gesture makes it known that it's not the good time, and Gleb leaves.

Sophia wants to throw a party at the last day before the wedding — but it seems that all they can do is to obtain one bottle of champagne and share it between Sophia, Rita, Lyuba and Polina. Fortunately, turns out that it was Rita's joke, and Polina has prepared a real party. Except, for Sophia it sounds so lame, she takes it as another joke which hides the "real" surprise. After she leaves, turns out that it was not a joke — which means, now they must prepare something better until the end of the day. When asked about her plans for the party by Gleb, she says that she doesn't know yet, because it would be surprise. Gleb congratulates her... on her last time. She, naturally, starts suspecting something bad after these words, and turns out to be right: he again starts talking about his great plans for their wedded life, which leaves no place for fun or freedom. Sophia, who just recently broke out of her father's gilded cage, isn't happy with such perspectives. Meanwhile, Sophia's friends prepares their plan for the party, but turns out that it's gonna cost a lot. Lyuba complains that "fun" can be achieved without spending anything, but gets ignored. Their discussion gets interrupted by Sophia, who, to distract herself from "great" perspective prepared for her by Gleb, needs to talk about something good — like the party they would throw; so let's discuss details, no more surprises! But when she hears out their ideas, she dislikes them all... because the "last in her life" party should be as crappy and wild as possible, so she would remember it forever. After failing to come up with anything on her own, Polina calls Timur to help with organisation: they have no idea how people of Sophia's age are making fun (Polina doesn't count, she's a "home person"). Timur, after hearing what they wants, starts making suggestions, each new one more absurd and disgusting than the previous one (amongst them things like "sex museum"). It's exactly what Sophia wants, but it would cost 50K just for the party, while Lyuba considered even 15K being "too much"; naturally, Lyuba complains again and suggest to stick with original plan instead of trying to come up with something "creative" and likely fail miserably. Meanwhile, after hearing the plan which Timur had prepared for him, Gleb starts worrying whether he would be alive from all this fun on the next day, and asks what is known about Sophia, since the same is likely true for her. Timur "reassures" Gleb that at least Sophia would be completely sober on their wedding: her friends have neither money nor imagination. Gleb isn't happy with this, so he asks Timur to put all the money they planned to use for his bachelor party — and all Timur's imagination — on Sophia's party instead, she needs it more. The party Polina and others organises for Sophia turns out to be the best party she ever had. But, after realising that it was the last party she would ever have, Sophia also realises that she doesn't want to marry anymore, since it would cost her freedom.

Timur tries to prepare a bachelor party for Gleb. Unfortunately, turns out that they both have several patients... but Alexei volunteers to take all patients for himself, to their gratitude. But then he starts constantly bothering Bykov with questions, and Bykov gets angry at him doubting himself instead of just making one final decision and sticking to it, and warns him that from now on, he would punish him with a night shift for any question. Alexei "earns" two just by asking whether Bykov is serious, before realising that Bykov isn't joking, and starts asking him only medicine-related questions... receiving a third one. To avoid earning even more, Alexei tries to ask Timur and then Gleb, but they're busy. So he has to start asking Bykov again, but this time subtler, either wording his questions as statements, expecting Bykov to react, or sending his patient to pretend that he's in doubt. It doesn't fool Bykov, and now Alexei has seven shifts. Alexei tries to just cheat, and give Bykov the list of diagnoses he prepared, asking "wnether everything is correct?" (one question), but Bykov doesn't fall for it, either, and refuses to even look at it until Alexei accepts those as his final decision. But Bykov agrees to play a little "game" (by the way, request to explain the rules is by itself a question, so now it's nine shifts); if Alexei wins, Bykov would lift all night shifts he had accumulated so far, but if not, he would double them. Alexei agrees... and quickly accumulates one hundred and forty four night shifts; even Bykov feels surprised. He, however, reveals to Timur that he would lift those as soon as Lyosha apologises — it's his method of showing Alexei why self-doubt is a terrible quality for a doctor. But Lyosha not only doesn't apologise, but decides that since he has nothing left to lose, he may as well try and see how far he can push already bad situation, and starts pressing Bykov with a hurricane of questions, most of them rude, nonsensical or both. He quickly raises it all the way to 365 days, with one day per question. Alexei finally apologises, and Bykov indeed lifts the night shifts... those one hundred forty four he accumulated initially; the rest are completely his fault, he accumulated them in his self-destructive apathy. Alexei tries to ask him one last question, but Bykov warns him that if he would like it, he would lift those; otherwise, he would triple them. Alexei pulls back immediately, admitting that Bykov certainly wouldn't like that question. Bykov actually likes this decision and counts it as success, as it means that Lyosha is confident in at least something for once.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Binge Montage: Montage of Sophia's party, which goes from place to place, becoming progressively more drunk, wild and insane.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Whatever Alexei planned to achieve by provoking Bykov further, this only results in him accumulating 365 days of night shifts (with only 144 being the original ones), one shift per question. When Alexei apologises, Bykov lifts the 144 shifts he promised, but the rests stays in effect: it's entirely Lyosha's fault.
  • Epic Fail: Alexei receives one night shift for each question (he just bothered Bykov too much), and quickly accumulates almost ten. But Bykov would lift them all if, after checking Alexei's work, he wouldn't find any mistake. If he would, then for any mistake he would double the amount of mistakes Lyosha accumulated. By the time he finishes, Alexei accumulates whopping one hundred and forty four shifts. Even Bykov gets surprised. Subverted in that Alexei accumulates all this from just four mistakes (out of ten patients!), as Bykov reveals afterwards; it's the quirk in the rules which got him so severe punishment.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kisegach was already extremely neurotic due to wedding being planned tomorrow. Kupitman, in attempt to calm her down, gives her cognac. When Bykov learns about this, he remembers that she would adhere a meeting today, and rushes to her in panic, realising that it would end very ugly. He arrives when it's already too late.
  • Stag Party: Sophia wants to throw her last party as unmarried girl, and asks her friends (Rita, Polina and Lyuba) to organise everything. At first, they comes with only a lame and cheap plan. Then they tries to come up with a better one (after Sophia thought that it was a joke to maintain the secret), which costs much more, but after that Sophia reveals that she wants something "wild and crappy". They then asks Timur, who comes up with actually good plan — but it's too expensive for their little budget. Fortunately, by that moment Gleb learns about their problems (from Timur), and cancels his own bachelor party to organise everything for Sophia instead, thinking that she needs it more.
  • Trauma Button: Kisegach starts another round of "oh my god, what if Gleb would go away from me forever?!", very painfully reliving the fact that her son would marry and thus "officially" become an adult, and anything even remotely related to wedding can provoke her into snapping into neurosis again. Which is exactly what happens during her ill-fated attempt to throw a meeting, due to several doctors using wedding-related metaphors and idioms (and one mentioning registry office). Kisegach snaps and runs away in tears.
  • Wham Line: After telling to Polina that it was the best party in her life — and, unfortunately, the last one — Sophia realises that she doesn't want to marry anymore, which she tells to Polina.
