Recap / The Interns S 13 E 19

Go To

Bykov and Kupitman plans to go to their favourite bar and spend time together, drinking — of which they informs Kisegach and Lyuba. Kisegach quickly voices that she has nothing against them doing something like this sometimes, but Kupitman suddenly states that they don't ask for permission — they inform them about their decision. Everything seemingly goes fine... but then they both awakes at some random house, inhabited by two girls — and not their girls! What if they cheated on their women while wasted? And, to make matters worse, they are already late to work, so Kisegach and Lyuba would search for them. After talking with the girls, Bykov and Kupitman learns that they didn't cheat on their women — not in the last turn because these girls (same ones who were barmaids in the bar they were drinking at) are actually lesbian. Bykov reacts with disgust (though at least it means that he's still faithful to Kisegach), while Kupitman reacts with pure relief. They prepares a cover story to explain how their women missed them, which involves sneaking into Kupitman's house and sleeping there. Unfortunately, this story has one major hole in it — Lyuba was there, waiting for Kupitman. Bykov, as fast as he can, tells the real version, but Kisegach doesn't believe in it, thinking that it was extremely blatant and lazy attempt to lie. But then Kisegach and Lyuba starts suspecting that something is wrong: the lie as ridiculous as that story about "lesbian barmaids" is just too bad, Bykov is much better liar than that! They should at least check up before continuing conflict. They visits the same bar which Bykov mentioned. For now, everything goes in according to Bykov's story; at least, barmaids are here. Kisegach suggests to just ask the girls directly about their orientation, since otherwise they would speculate forever. But neither she nor Lyuba can spit it out, and instead orders even more champagne. Soon they becomes drunk enough to not even bothering with asking for anything else than more alcohol, and then even starts dancing... with each other. Cut to them awakening in the same bed... in the house of those same girls. After talking with them, they realises that Bykov and Kupitman indeed were there. Meanwhile, Bykov and Kupitman tries to call them, only to realise that they turned off their phones. They thinks that they just blatantly boycotted them, which is too boring to even pay attention, and leaves home.

Sophia worries that she may be pregnant. Or, it may be stress-related... The only way to make sure is to go and buy pregnancy test for once. But since she's too shy, she asks Rita to do it for her. The test shows that she's not pregnant, and Sophia tells Gleb the "good news", but he doesn't react with joy; while he isn't actively trying to impregnate her, he sees no reason why having children would be "bad" either. But Sophia wants to live for herself for now, and thinks that it's too early to have children... while Gleb already imagines their future with big family, with "at least" three children. Sophia tries to imagine it too... and such future looks like a nightmare for her. Sophia offers Gleb to discuss their plans for the future. He agrees... and drops on her a large and complicated list of his own plans for their future life... which leaves no place for Sophia's own wishes and dreams.

Rita worries that something is wrong with Alexei: he became much colder to her; no compliments, no flowers, no sex. Lyuba suggests to seriously talk with him and find out what's going on. But after seeing her buying a pregnancy test for Sophia, Alexei (who thinks that she's buying it for herself) starts avoiding Rita even more actively. Especially since Rita wants to talk about "their future". Thinking that Rita is pregnant from him, Alexei realises that there's no going back now, and "prepares" himself for serious talk, with vodka. Alexei, now not exactly sober, comes to Rita with flowers and proposes to her. Rita is completely happy, since he finally did what she waited for so long, but Alexei insists that she should tell him what she wanted to discuss at the morning. When she calls it "non-serious", he reacts negatively, asking whether she considers their first baby being "non-serious", and only then Alexei learns that Rita isn't pregnant, and he "sacrificed" his freedom in vain. Of course, this ruins the moment, since now Rita thinks that her pregnancy was the only reason for this, and Alexei barely salvages the situation by lying that he was sincere, and it's just a coincidence. Timur, when hears about this, can't help but laugh at stupidity of Alexei's situation, and asks why he didn't just tell as is; now, any attempt to dump Rita would be downright suicidal.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Alexei completely ruins his attempts to break up with Rita, by panicking and proposing to her. Now, he indeed no longer can back out.
  • Cassandra Truth: After Kupitman tries to lie, and fails miserably, Bykov tells the real version where they have been (that one with two lesbian barmaids). Kisegach thinks that it was very lazy attempt to lie, and doesn't believe him.
  • Control Freak: Gleb starts developing the "best" qualities of Sophia's father Yakov — like a long list of the plans for years to come, which establishes the course of their life in so much details, there's no place for improvisation. And all of this without asking what Sophia wants, even once.
  • Honorable Marriage Proposal: Alexei spent a whole season (and part of the previous one) trying (and failing) to dump Rita, only to mistake her for being pregnant from him and deciding to marry her after all, thinking that not leaving her alone with his baby is more important than his own happiness, because it would be right thing to do. Rita doesn't react well when she learns that Alexei proposed only for this reason, but he convinces her that it was just a coincidence.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Two girls in whose apartment Bykov and Kupitman (and later Kisegach and Lyuba) awakes after drunk night in the bar are actually a lesbian couple. Because they both looks feminine, neither one of the main characters recognises that something is wrong until they kisses each other.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Alexei busts Rita buying a pregnancy test (it's actually for Sophia), then she tells him that she wants to make a serious talk. His conclusions are obvious — and obviously wrong.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Exaggerated, during the kiss scene, the focus is set to Kisegach and Lyuba (resulting in kiss itself being heavily blurred), to avoid conflicts with censors for "advertising" homosexuality to minors (the series has 16+ rating).
  • Skewed Priorities: Gleb can't choose the colour of blankets without Sophia, since he fears to choose something wrong and offend her... but he thinks that he may plan ahead how many children they would have without ever asking her whether she wants children in the first place (and the list of decisions like this which he made without consulting with her just goes on).
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: After drunk night in the bar, Bykov and Kupitman awakes in unfamiliar house which belongs to two girls they only vaguely remembers. Fearing for the worst, they asks them what exactly happened; fortunately, turns out that they didn't cheat on their women... not in the last turn because these two girls aren't into men.
