Recap / The Interns S 13 E 16

Go To

Lyuba moves to work under Kupitman, which means that Rita once again replaces her as the Head Nurse of Therapy, this time permanently. But Bykov, obviously being unhappy with losing one of his oldest friends and most trusted underlings from his team (even if she stays in the hospital, Therapy wouldn't be the same anymore), to cope with it, starts acting openly hostile to Lyuba's replacement — Rita. Meanwhile, Alexei realises what a mistake he did when proposed to Rita, because Rita now plans to introduce him to her great-grandmother, and it would be even more awkward to dump Rita after that. Bykov using any opportunity to insult Rita (or, failing that, making one up by himself) only makes the situation worse, and Lyosha decides to wait a little longer. Rita realises why Bykov acts this way, and goes to Lyuba, to ask her for advice about Bykov. After talking with her, she realises that Bykov expects her to act like Lyuba and fight back. It seemingly works, but spoils Rita's own mood, making Lyosha again unable to dump her; he decides to ask Bykov to stop yelling at Rita, at least for today, to which Bykov agrees once he hears why Lyosha needs it. But when Bykov goes to Rita to apologise for acting rude (he overreacted, and he's indeed sorry), he finds her crying: her great-grandmother just died, never having a chance to meet Alexei. Then Alexei finds her, thinks that she's crying due to Bykov, and rushes to confront him. When Bykov tells him the real reason, Alexei feels... relief, which disgusts Bykov so much, he kicks him out from his sight. Alexei manages to comfort Rita, but now he has to attend funeral, where even more of her relatives would see them together...

As she explained to Sophia, Polina wants to continue having sex with Timur, but since she already offered it twice on her own accord, it makes her look like she "owes" him. Nope, third time should be initiated by Timur, with her "agreeing". To help Polina, Sophia starts "hinting" Timur that he should talk with Polina, by using one patient (who had no sex for a month due to being too shy) as an example of what she means, and then stating that Timur has one such "patient" himself, not realising this yet. But Timur makes entirely wrong conclusions, and thinks that this "patient" is Sophia herself. He warns Gleb about it, worrying whether they have some problems, and Gleb suddenly realises that Timur may be right: he was too busy preparing for the wedding to pay attention to Sophia. He catches Sophia at first opportunity to "make up" for not satisfying her previously, to Sophia's surprise. And there would be another one at evening. After talking with Polina, Sophia realises that Timur didn't get any hints, and requires more work. She tries again, this time using food as analogy, but Timur again takes it as her not being satisfied by Gleb. When Gleb again tries to "make up for his mistakes", Sophia herself starts suspecting that something is wrong. But even the third attempt gives the same result. When Gleb takes her to remote room for a third time, Sophia rejects his attempts, and, from his reaction, realises that Timur, instead of Polina, talked with Gleb. She explains everything; Gleb calls her out on being too subtle, and insists on doing everything by himself. He just tells Timur directly, without even bothering with hinting, and leaving coming up with a good excuse to Timur himself. Sophia thinks that Gleb had "ruined everything", as it was supposed to be "more delicate", but Gelb insists that she already tried subtlety, and failed miserably; no, they need most blatant and obvious approach. Because women seeks for double-meaning where it doesn't exist, while men only understands when you tell them as is. Now, it's for Timur to utilise his chance and not ruin everything.

Since Lyuba now works under Kupitman, she wants to know with whom of his nurses he previously had affairs — but he insists that there were none; even he has standards! It's, of course, a lie, with him having affairs with basically everyone, and now he collected them all in his office, warning that this should remain a secret. The nurses utterly fails at keeping it, however, and Lyuba learns everything anyway, getting very angry at Kupitman. Kupitman, in turn, gets equally angry at his nurses for screwing up like this; when one of them tries to argue that they "did nothing wrong", he just fires them all. Lyuba is ready to forgive Kupitman, who's willing to let past go and start from scratch, without lying, but this time, Lyuba would pick the nurses herself. Kupitman agrees and gives her carte-blanche.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Alexei wants to avoid visiting Rita's great-grandmother. He wouldn't, because she just died... but now they would adhere her funeral, where the rest of Rita's relatives would be, so if anything, the situation only became worse.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Kupitman asks his nurses to keep the fact that he slept with them in the past from Lyuba. They reveals it at the first opportunity, since when Lyuba starts bragging about her sex with Kupitman, they don't even bother to play along, immediately slipping the fact that they know him very close (and he didn't impress them, for that matter). They only realises that they spilled important secret when angry Kupitman fires them for this screwup.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Bykov may be not the nicest one out there, not even bothering to pretend that he likes relatives of his wife, but when Alexei openly shows relief at Rita's great-grandmother's death (he never even met her in person before!), he reacts with utter disgust.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Whenever Alexei tries to talk to Rita, so he may dump her, he chooses the absolutely worst moment, when she's very angry after conflicting with Bykov, and decides to wait for other time. Then he tries to ask Bykov to leave Rita alone for some time, but the news about her great-grandmother dying arrives, meaning that now it would be downright cruel to dump her.
  • Hint Dropping: Sophia tries to "hint" to Timur that he "has a patient who needs some sex", due to not having it for month, meaning Polina, but it's so vague, he thinks that she's referring to her relationship with Gleb — all three times she tries. It works much better for Gleb, who just tells Timur as is, that Polina wants him and he just needs to give her some "excuse" for visit.
  • Jerkass Ball: Rita's plot runs entirely on Bykov being unusually hostile to her out of a blue, despite normally getting along with her quite well. In the end, he apologises, explaining that he's overreacted to Lyuba leaving.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Bykov is angry at Lyuba for leaving to Kupitman, so he deals with stress... by yelling on Rita, who replaced her.
  • Servile Snarker: Bykov misses occasional verbal fights and snarky comments from Lyuba; when Rita (who replaced her) realises that he bullies her in attempt to provoke her, and retaliates, it makes Bykov leave her alone.
  • That Came Out Wrong: After learning that Rita cries not because of Bykov and instead because of the death of her great-grandmother to whom she wanted to introduce Alexei, Lyosha (who utterly feared to witness her, due to planning to dump Rita at first opportunity) reacts with relief (aloud), to Bykov's disgust.
