Recap / The Interns S 13 E 15

Go To

Timur's new patient is no one else but famous comedian Garik Harlamov. Unfortunately, rumours spreads fast, and now more and more his (mostly female) fans start swarming around. Garik prefers some privacy, so he asks Timur to get rid of them. Gleb, after learning about Garik being here, has an idea: they may trick him into believing that he's deadly ill, and "save" him. He would owe them — and they may ask him to act as toastmaster for Gleb's wedding. Gleb and Timur proceeds with the plan, scaring Harlamov into thining that he has some deadly illness which causes thrombus, from which only they can save him. To make it more believable, they acts as vague and counterintuitive as possible, to prevent him from realising anything. Right in Garik's presence, the two starts discussion position of toastmaster on Gleb's wedding, and, just as planned, Harlamov offers his position, as long as they saves him. Gleb goes to tell this to Sophia, only for her to not recognise who "Garik Harlamov is". Then she remembers, and states that she dislikes his style of comedy, which is too vulgar for her tastes (she also dislikes his voice, like of old alcoholic). Naturally, having him as a toastmaster is no longer an option, and now Gleb and Timur must somehow reject his offer without sounding rude. Harlamov, meanwhile, starts calling his agents to cancel every planned show; he's in panic. When Gleb announces that he no longer needs him, Harlamov interprets it as the doctors leaving him to die, and starts begging them to save him anyway. To calm him down, they tells him that he has no thrombus at all. But when Gleb tells Sophia about refusing Harlamov's services, she reacts badly, saying that while she dislikes him, mere fact of having a celebrity guest on the wedding would drastically increase her reputation in the eyes of her friends. Gleb now has to re-hire Harlamov without causing suspicions, but Garik now plans to go to Germany instead, thinking that his doctors don't know what they're doing. On the way out, he insults Sophia in an elevator, and now she wouldn't accept him even if Gleb somehow hires him. To please Sophia, Gleb pretends that he hired him, just so he may promise to go and "deal with him".

Kupitman, without Phil, starts overworking, and now needs someone to help him with it. Bykov points that under Kupitman, Phil was suffering all this and more, so he has no rights to complain, and then realises that Kupitman just asks to give him one of his interns again. But Kupitman needs not intern — he needs Lyuba. He would invite her regardless of Bykov's opinion, but decided to at least inform him, to not look like a jerk. Lyuba, meanwhile, overhears their discussion, and mistakes it for Kupitman planning to propose to her. Bykov agrees that Lyuba would move to Kupitman sooner or later by herself, without even listening to him, but asks Kupitman to wait a little more: an inspection would happen soon, and only Lyuba may organise everything just right to not cause them any problems. When Kupitman goes to Lyuba, to ask to rent some coats, she feels disappointment, expecting completely different request. Rita thinks that maybe Kupitman is just too shy, and Lyuba decides to help him with gathering courage — by giving him cognac. Unfortunately, he misses every hint, which Lyuba interprets as him intentionally avoiding this conversation, so he may do it as surprise at evening. But Kupitman never asks about marriage, and Lyuba starts suspecting that perhaps she just jumped to conclusions? Rita goes to Kupitman and suggests to just tell Lyuba as is. He, thinking that she's referring to him inviting Lyuba to work under him, tries to talk about this to Lyuba, but she interrupts him by inviting to a restaurant, to talk it over; he agrees. Only there, Lyuba realises that Kupitman isn't gonna marry her, and she's so disappointed, she actually refuses his offer. Now, Kupitman doesn't know what to do. He isn't ready to marry Lyuba, as he was already married thrice and every time it ended with an ugly divorce and drunk depression, and is just afraid to try again. But he also fears losing Lyuba. Meanwhile, Rita convinces Lyuba to give Kupitman another chance; even if he's not ready yet, it doesn't matter that he wouldn't try later! And besides, the offer was actually very good — it's not a marriage yet, but a large step towards it, as now they would work together.

This episode provides examples of:

  • As Himself: Garik "Bulldog" Harlamov, Russian artist and comedian, best known by (TNT-hosted) show Comedy Club, shows up as Timur's new patient (with Gleb joining in in hope to hire him as toastmaster).
  • Batman Gambit: Gleb firstly convinces Harlamov that he's deadly sick, then starts discussing his need for toastmaster with Timur in Garik's presence, expecting that Harlamov would offer his help in return for being saved; it works, albeit Gleb later ruins everything himself due to not communicating with Sophia properly.
  • Gushing About Guest Stars: Inverted; Sophia reveals that she strongly dislikes Garik Harlamov and his comedy routine. She still wants to have him as toastmaster when hears about the plan: even if she dislikes him, having celebrity guest is very prestigious.
  • Induced Hypochondria: Gleb and Timur lies to Harlamov that he has some (hard-to-pronounce — and completely fake) "deadly" illness, which only they can cure. Their plan relies on him believing them, and offering to do anything for them as a sign of his gratitude. Instead, he complains to Kisegach when they wastes too much time without giving any meaningful info and jumping back-and-forth with whether he has a thrombus or not.
  • Never My Fault: Gleb tells Timur that, formally, Harlamov was Timur's patient, so if he would actually go through with his threat to sue them, it's Timur who would be at danger, not Gleb. Never mind that the whole plan was Gleb's idea.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: Kupitman discusses with Bykov inviting Lyuba to work under him. Lyuba overhears it, but without hearing the beginning, interprets it as them discussing Kupitman's plans to propose to her.
  • Out of Focus: Neither Alexei nor Polina have any role in this episode.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had Gleb asked Sophia whether she wants Harlamov as their toastmaster right from the start, she would have agreed. Instead, he just informs her about him being here, receives a negative reaction (she dislikes his shows), cancels everything and only then informs about the plans to hire Harlamov, which she actually likes, as she's willing to tolerate him if it means having celebrity guest on their wedding.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure: Subverted. At first Sophia not recognising Harlamov looks like yet another case of her being unaware of the Russian media, due to mostly concentrating on European movies, but then she finally remembers him — and reveals that she dislikes him.
