Recap / The Interns S 12 E 4

Go To

Since both Kupitman and Lyuba fell asleep, Lyuba is still at Kupitman's by the morning, and to not get busted by Gleb and Sophia, they must wait for them to leave. Everything goes wrong immediately, since Gleb suddenly returns while Lyuba is still in the shower, and despite all Kupitman's attempts to distract him, Gleb realises that there's someone fourth and gets interested to find out who it is; meanwhile, Lyuba decides to stay for longer, since she suffers from hangover and feels extreme headache. Gleb tells Bykov about his suspicions, and Bykov decides to find out by himself whether Kupitman actually started a new relationship. During his investigation, Bykov learns that Lyuba got wasted on previous night, but not details, and tries to ask Kupitman — who insists that nothing happened. As Kupitman normally brags about his conquests (and long stopped being ashamed of failures, after so many of them), Gleb presumes that he's hiding something else — like his new "girlfriend" being a prostitute. Sophia believes in this, and from her, Lyuba learns about this theory too — and doesn't take it well. She confronts Kupitman, thinking that it was him who said this, but he states that he didn't tell anyone, and the rumour was likely started by Gleb. Lyuba agrees with this version, and states that the next time, they would do it at hers instead, with which Kupitman agrees. Then Bykov presses Kupitman by himself. Kupitman snaps and angrily tells that "she's not a whore", only to agree with Bykov's version at the last moment when he notices Lyuba and realises how close he was to reveal their secret; he words it in such a way that Bykov feels shame for pressing him... and later comes to apologise; fortunately, Kupitman actually went to Lyuba, so he doesn't learn anything.

Polina's patient Julia is a divorced woman herself. She, just like Polina, considers her divorce to be a great decision, since it freed her from constant presence of asshole husband, but states one major problem — lack of sex. It used to be regular; not anymore. She warns Polina that same would happen to her, and that she would desperately search for any non-loony guy for one-night stand. Polina then remembers about Phil, and suggests her patient to try with him: he is just as lonely. Polina even promises to hint Phil. But since Polina doesn't mention patient and only asks what he thinks about "one-night-stand sex", he naturally thinks that she's asking for herself. Phil feels uncomfortable about it, wile Gleb encourages him to try, as she'd offered it first. Then Julia asks on her own, and now Phil thinks that both girls are after him. Gleb suggests to just do them both, on different days. Later Gleb learns that Julia is Polina's patient, and that they're on suspiciously friendly terms, and starts suspecting that they're planning a threesome. Of course, better safe than sorry, so they must find out more before going any further. Phil asks Polina, who (thinking that her plan is working) "confirms" everything. Phil is nervous, fearing that he may do something wrong due to inexperience and stress, but Gleb suggests him to just take viagra as a "failsafe". Phil prepares for the main event, taking horse dosage of viagra, hiding condoms everywhere, preparing some wine and even fixing a scratching bed. But Julia decides not to go after all, and asks Polina to call Phil and inform him. When Phil tries to invite Polina, she only laughs, and hangs up. Now, Phil doesn't know what to do with all this...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Brick Joke: Gleb jumps into conclusion that Kupitman was with prostitute, and tells this version to Bykov. This would later cause a couple of awkward moments when two characters in a row calls Kupitman in the middle of the night:
  • Heel Realisation: Kupitman "agrees" with Bykov's version about being with prostitute, and states that he was drunk while doing it, and is now strongly embarrassed and wants to forget it, while Bykov keeps reminding him. This makes Bykov feel like a jerk for pushing him, and he later comes to apologise, only avoiding busting Kupitman with Lyuba because Kupitman did take Lyuba's advice and went to hers instead.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Sophia takes offence at Bykov and Gleb discussing Kupitman's personal life right in front of her (ignoring her repeatedly asking them to stop), since he is her uncle and they know it.
  • Mistaken for Prostitute: Since Kupitman hides his new girlfriend from everyone, and stubbornly denies to even have one, Gleb suspects that the real reason for this is him hiding a prostitute. Unknowingly to him (and Bykov, to whom he tells this), it was really Lyuba.
  • Out of Focus: Sophia has only minor role in this episode, while Alexei is absent outright.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Since Polina, instead of mentioning her patient Julia, just asks Phil what he thinks about "one-night-stand" sex, he naturally thinks that she's asking it for herself. When Julia asks him too, he starts thinking that both girls are after him. Then Gleb learns that Julia is Polina's patient and starts suspecting that they are trying to "trick" Phil into threesome. It causes a lot of awkwardness when Julia changes her mind, and Phil tries to ask Polina directly.
  • Raging Stiffie: Phil was supposed to take one viagra pill, to "feel more self-confident". He takes five. And then that threesome never happens...
  • Relationship Upgrade: Kupitman and Lyuba actually starts considering themselves being something more than mere friends a possibility. Lyuba even suggests that they may do a "third round", on which Kupitman agrees (and which they actually do later). Both are completely sober, so no alcohol influence.
  • Shower of Love: Kupitman "invites" himself to Lyuba, thinking that they can continue lovemaking in the shower; Lyuba, who's suffering from heavy hangover, angrily rejects him.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: After almost slipping out that he was with Lyuba, Kupitman decides to go with Bykov's version about a prostitute after all — also managing to make Bykov look bad in process, since in Kupitman's version of events, he was too drunk to remember anything, and now because of Bykov can't forget it. Kupitman later uses the same excuse again when Bykov comes to apologise while Kupitman was at Lyuba's, stating that he is "in bordello". While Lyuba comments on this, she agrees that this was the only option to shut Bykov up.
  • A Threesome Is Hot: Due to Polina and her patient Julia being too subtle in their attempt to hook Julia with Phil, Gleb started thinking that they are secretly planning a threesome. He considers this idea being awesome, and actually envies Phil.
