Recap / The Interns S 11 E 19

Go To

Bykov suddenly gets confronted by suspiciously-looking guy, in whom he recognises someone called Avdeev. Avdeev calls him "asshole" and puts a gun at him. Turns out that some time ago, Bykov caused him being hospitalised in a psychiatric clinic, where he spent half a year — forever ruining his life, because no one would want to deal with "psycho". But suddenly Avdeev has a heart attack (about which Bykov tried to warn him, knowing about his medical condition due to being his former doctor), and now requires help himself. Bykov takes away Avdeev's revolver, and invites Kupitman to play a Russian Roulette. Kupitman initially refuses, but changes his mind at the last moment when called "chicken". They proceeds with the game, though Kupitman, realising into what he was almost tricked, refuses to shoot himself after all, even after being called a "coward" again. Bykov, to show that he's "braver", just tries to shoot himself again, and that's when Kisegach enters. She's less than amused, especially since he continues acting like lunatic even in her presence, and, even when Bykov reveals that the gun isn't loaded at all, takes it away for Bykov's own safety. Now, Kupitman thinks that it's Bykov who's a coward, as he was aware that the gun is empty, while Kupitman almost shot himself without knowing it. Bykov, in turn, suggests to steal the gun back, load it with ammo and try again. When Kisegach returns, she sees that the gun is no longer in the locker. She immediately realises what this means, and runs to Kupitman's office to prevent the catastrophe. Meanwhile, Bykov already started loading the gun; Kupitman tries to stop him, stating that he already "proved" everything, but Bykov insists that they must go "to the end", and shoots. Kisegach hears a loud "blam" and Kupitman crying "Andrey, what have you done?!", and feels as if the shot was done right into her heart. She rushes inside... and sees that Kupitman is crying over his ruined collection of cognac, while Bykov is sitting in deep shock, still holding the revolver. Turns out, he chose to shoot something else at the very last moment, which saved his life.

Alexei still tries to win Sophia through his weird scheme which involves making her envy of his "relationship" with Rita. Rita, who expected that this would become the real relationship, decides that she is tired of this and must just dump Lyosha already (idea which Lyuba supports). She proceeds to do exactly that, not even caring about "good excuses" anymore (which Alexei tried to use in his defence). Alexei looks so sad over this "breakup" that Sophia tries to comfort him. Lyosha realises that he may exploit this, and asks Rita for help: all she needs to do is to confirm whatever Sophia would ask her about Lyosha. But the claims she has to confirm makes her look like some sort of monster — her forcing Alexei to take a bank loan to buy a new fur coat; badmouthing Torzhok; considering anything beyond MKAD to be a "rathole"; and so on. Now, Alexei has Sophia's sympathy — and Rita's antipathy, as Sophia now hates her. She refuses to participate in any his plans again. He tries to continue the scheme anyway, but it irritates Sophia, as all he does is to talk about Rita and Rita only, complaining like a spineless whiner. This forces him to unleash the "ultimate weapon" — the "real" reason why they broke up; she cheated on him with a "pizza delivery guy" in his own bed. It was the last straw, and Rita just tells Sophia about the whole scheme. Sophia angrily calls Alexei out on his behaviour towards Rita, and orders to leave her and Gleb alone — and apologise before Rita. Alexei actually tries, with the "pizza delivery guy" being the best way he can think of. Somehow, it works.

When the girl he just spent a night with recognises his room (starting from the sound of his alarm and ending with sounds his bed makes), Phil starts suspecting that Gleb might using his room for sex while he's on night shifts; he is certainly not okay with this. But Gleb claims that he is innocent. Phil tells Gleb that he would install locks, but Gleb insists that it wasn't his fault. Phil suggests to invite the same girl again; if she would recognise Gleb, then Phil is right, otherwise, Phil would apologise. They three goes to a restaurant, where the girl recognises Gleb — and he recognises her (on the second try). Phil decides that he needs no further proof, and leaves, before Gleb has a chance to explain. At home, Gleb interrupts Phil when he starts installing the locks, and reveals how he actually met that girl. Back in the past Halloween, Gleb invited two girls (Gleb was a vampire, girls were dressed as nurse and fairy); Phil was wasted after "celebrating" with Kupitman, and since Gleb was busy with "nurse", they leaved the "fairy" to watch over Phil. Phil only now realises that his dream about a night of love with a fairy was not a dream at all... while Gleb realises what funny story he would tell everyone tomorrow.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Kisegach took away the gun from Bykov, who tried to play Russian Roulette with it. Bykov steals it back, which she realises too late to prevent. She runs to Kupitman's office (where Bykov "plays" it wit Kupitman), only to hear a sudden gun shot and Kupitman crying "Andrey, what have you done?!". She rushes to them... and realises that Bykov had shot not himself, but the cabinet with Kupitman's cognac.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Avdeev; he wants to present himself as a genuine threat to Bykov, but he is a nervous wreak (which he makes worse by consuming some vodka) with serious heart condition. Bykov's insults quickly provokes him into heart attack (despite Bykov actually trying to calm him down when he realises where it's going). As result, Avdeev self-disposes in the first few minutes of the episode.
  • Brick Joke: Remember that lie about Rita "cheating on Lyosha with a pizza delivery boy"? Guess how Alexei tries to apologise before Rita in the end of the episode. Strangely, it works.
  • Call-Back: When Rita dumps him, Alexei tries to use her own argument about "needing a good excuse" to stop her from doing this. It doesn't work.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Barely averted; Bykov spent a whole episode "playing" Russian Roulette for his sick amusement, even if it means "playing" it solo, because Kupitman refused to participate, even when called "coward" for it. The first couple of times, Bykov just uses the empty gun to make fun on Kupitman, but the very first shot he does when he actually loads the gun turns out to be real, only missing Bykov's head because he had a weird feeling and put in not to his head, but to the cabinet with Kupitman's cognac, at the very last moment.
  • Jerkass Ball: Alexei normally is nicer one amongst new interns, but this time he starts badmouthing Rita before Sophia in his ill-fated attempts to win her sympathy; if anything, he makes her despise him more.
  • Love Dodecahedron: Gleb and Sophia are in love with each other. Alexei is in love with Sophia, but pretends to be in love with Rita as part of his weird scheme which involves making Sophia envy and then exploiting it. Rita is (or at least close to it) in love with Alexei, and needs to somehow distract him from Sophia.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!:
    • Kupitman initially tries to talk Bykov out of playing Russian Roulette, but when Bykov pretends that he would ask someone else, "more brave", this hits Kupitman's weak point and forces him to agree to "prove" that he isn't "chicken". He almost immediately snaps back and tries to trick Bykov into doing first shot, though, and then outright refuses to participate, realising in what he was tricked to participate. He does not fall for being called "chicken" again, either.
    • When Kupitman learns that Bykov fooled him and that the gun was never loaded in the first place, he accuses him of being "chicken", because while Bykov was aware that the gun is empty, Kupitman wasn't, yet he still did put it to his head and almost shot. To "prove" that he is wrong, Bykov suggested to steal the gun back from Kisegach, and try again. He actually almost shoots himself, and only survives because he backs out at the very last moment and decides to put it on Kupitman's booze stash instead.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kisegach checks the locker in her table to make sure that the gun she took away from Bykov is still here... and doesn't find it. She runs to Kupitman's office in panic — and midway hears the sound of gunshot and Kupitman's crying, meaning that she's too late. Fortunately, turns out that Bykov just shot not himself, but Kupitman's cognac collection.
  • Reckless Gun Usage:
    • When Kisegach tries to take the gun away from Bykov, she tries to forcedly tear it out of Bykov's hand, despite it supposedly being loaded and pointed at Kupitman.
    • Downplayed with Bykov; while he did unload the gun even before visiting Kupitman in the first place, him pointing it around and clicking at himself, Kupitman and even Kisegach is still a safety violation.
  • Russian Roulette: Entire premise of Bykov's plot; he obtains the gun from his deranged old patient, and tries to force Kupitman into playing with him. After Kisegach prohibits him from doing so and confiscates the gun... he just steals it and resumes. Eventually, the gun does fire, but Bykov survives because he decided to point it not to his head, but to the cabinet with Kupitman's cognac.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: When Sophia starts "pitying" Alexei, and even suggests to kiss him or, better, let him touch her breast, he completely misses the obvious sarcasm in her voice and actually tries to grab her; after that, she calls him out on his bullshit and forces him to leave her alone — and to apologise before Rita.
  • Shout-Out: Gleb's "theory" how Phil could have already invited that girl and just forgot about it gets illustrated by the scene taken directly from Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures (that one where Shurik looks into girl's conspectus over her shoulder). Phil dismisses this theory as ridiculous; he also fails to recognise either the movie from which it was taken, or even the name of its director.
  • Slasher Smile: Bykov's smile when he makes the first shot in his Russian Roulette game with Kupitman (gun doesn't fire, obviously) is outright maniacal.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Only when Gleb reveals the story how he leaved the girl dressed as a fairy back in the past Halloween in his room (which also explains why the girl has only sketchy memory of Phil's room besides the part that she was here, once), Phil realises that the dream about him having sex with a fairy was... not a dream at all.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Bykov, of all people. He takes the the revolver from his former patient Avdeev (which he tried to use against him; emphasis on "tried") for himself, and then suggests to Kupitman to play a Russian Roulette (Kupitman is not exactly motivated to participate, to say the least, and only gets convinced when Bykov calls him a "coward"); it turns out that Bykov never loaded the gun with the bullet, though. He continues doing this even after being directly prohibited by Kisegach (this time with a loaded one), and ultimately the gun does fire, with Bykov only surviving because he at the last moment decided to point the gun not to his head, but to the cabinet with Kupitman's cognac.
  • Troll: Bykov organises the whole Russian Roulette to make fun of Kupitman, whom he calls a coward, knowing that the gun isn't loaded, so he can freely point it to his head and click, while Kupitman thinks that he's in genuine danger. This almost backfires on Bykov himself, with tragic consequences, when he gets accused of being a coward, and falls for it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never learn what happened to Avdeev after his ill-fated attempt to attack Bykov, not even whether he survived his heart attack or not.
