Recap / The Interns S 11 E 13

Go To

Sophia asks Bykov to assign her to Kupitman, then Kupitman to assign her to Phil. Since Gleb just asked for leave to visit his grandmother (who is on the plan and would cover for him if asked), it means that they are free to be together for the full day. Their plan has one weak point, however — Phil, who would break under any pressure. But, to their surprise, when Gleb tests him, turns out that Phil already has the answers prepared. What they didn't take into account is that in Sophia's absence, Bykod dumped her patients on Alexei, who's not happy about it at all. Overworked, Lyosha starts making silly mistakes, which attracts Bykov's attention; when pressed, he accidentally slips more information than intended, and Bykov decides to check what Sophia's doing under Kupitman — and learns that she and Gleb are in relationship. Since not even Kupitman was aware that relationship isn't fake, they decides to check Phil to confirm or disprove Bykov's suspicions that this may be just an excuse for those two to have sex. They takes Phil's keys, but finds neither Sophia nor Gleb. They then checks Kupitman's own apartment, again without results. And then Bykov finds them hiding in the shower, when searching for restroom and seeing shower curtain being closed — and calls Kupitman. Kupitman reacts extremely badly, considering that Gleb just "betrayed" his trust. Now, Gleb, Sophia and Phil must spend a night shift together — Gleb and Sophia for skipping work (and lying to Bykov about it), and Phil for covering for them. Just to be sure that they would not try to have sex again, Bykov would call them often — at unpredictable intervals — and supervise them via Skype! Thinking that they have some time, Gleb and Sophia leaves the on-call room... only for Bykov to call again immediately, with only Phil being around.

Semyon receives a patient, who was injured while visiting a market; Semyon interprets it as him being beaten during stealing attempt and now trying to defend himself. He leaves for short time, and when returns, finds that the patient is gone — and so is Lobanov's phone! Of course, Lobanov assumes that the patient have stole it — unaware that he just dropped it right in his office. Olga convinces Semyon to just go and buy a new phone. He goes to the nearby underground to find the cheapest one available — and sees something which he mistakes for his old phone, thinking that the shopkeeper deals in stolen phones. He goes into conflict with the guy, and then calls police, but when the cop sides with a shopkeeper, refuses to believe his arguments, now thinking that police is part of the "scheme". Lobanov goes to cop's boss, but receives the same answer: this "criminal scheme" exists only in Semyon's head. Then Olga calls from Semyon's phone (she gave him her own for a time), stating that she just found it, in his office. And due to the phone being too loud, everyone else hears it, too. Lobanov quietly mumbles "sorry", and rushes out.

Alexei's patient recognises him as a plumber — and now doubts whether he should trust such doctor. He goes straight to Kisegach, asking her to replace Alexei. She knows Lyosha well enough to trust him, and instead suggests to supervise him to make sure that nothing bad would happen, to which patient agrees. It works, but results in the rest of Alexei's patients learning about his plumber job, and reacting the same way. Kisegach again defends him, but gives Alexei an ultimatum: he must either quit his plumber job, or quit internship. Alexei then gets asked by Lyuba to help with fixing a broken pipe in restroom; he reluctantly agrees, but gets busted by Kisegach after finishing. To his surprise, she actually congratulates him on a job well done, since he helped the hospital, even if in non-standard way... and asks him to help her with a broken air conditioner.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bad Liar: Averted with Phil, for once. His lie gets revealed not because his cover story is bad (he actually fools Kupitman), but because Bykov was already aware that something is fishy, and insisted on thoroughly checking every single excuse Phil could use (most of them preventively), leaving him no chance. Everyone (including Phil himself) still reacts like it was his fault, though.
  • Back-Alley Doctor: Invoked. When one of Alexei's patients recognises him as a plumber whom he once hired, he reacts badly, not trusting such "doctor's" competence. Kisegach manages to convince the guy that Alexei is competent, but then the rest of Alexei's patient learns about this, with the same results. Since Kisegach can't defend him every time something like this happens (and it would happen again!), she forces Lyosha into choosing between medicine and his side job; he choses medicine. Of course, it only affects his side job, nobody prohibit him from fixing something in the hospital.
  • Comically Inept Healing: When Alexei's patient complains to Kisegach about being treated by a "plumber" instead of "actual" doctor, short montage of Alexei using plumbing gear to treat him gets shown. This looks as ridiculous as it sounds.
  • Double Standard: Kisegach insists that Alexei must choose between being a locksmith/plumber/whatever, and being a doctor. He choses medicine, but gets asked by Lyuba to fix a broken pipe in restroom (he agrees because it's that urgent)... and Kisegach, when learns about this, not only congratulates him on it, but also asks to fix her conditioner. Perhaps, when it's for the hospital instead of own profit, she considers it to be okay.
  • Epic Fail: When Olga finally finds Semyon's phone, rather than apologise, Lobanov insults the police and claims that it's him "giving up on the hopeless case". Unfortunately, due to the phone being too loud, they overheard everything that Olga has said to him, and knows what really happened.
  • Freudian Slip: When pressed about his silly mistakes, Alexei accidentally slips a rude comment about Gleb and Sophia... well, having sex instead of doing their work. Bykov instantly notices that something is wrong, and decides to check what exactly Sophia does under Kupitman... only to learn that Gleb has a relationship with Sophia.
  • Hope Spot: When Gleb silently begs Bykov to not rat him and Sophia out to Kupitman when Bykov (who went at the restroom at the last moment) busts them in Kupitman's shower, at first it seems like Bykov (just as silently) agreed (he even flushes the toilet, despite never actually using it)... and then immediately calls Kupitman to the restroom.
  • Internal Reveal: Bykov learns about Sophia's relationship with Gleb, from Kupitman. Then Kupitman (from him) learns that this relationship is real, and not a facade as they previously agreed.
  • Never My Fault: Semyon refuses to apologise even when turns out that he indeed just misplaced his phone, and continues insulting police, saying that he's taking back his statement because "this case is hopeless". Unfortunately for him, they heard everything what was said by Olga.
  • Oh, Crap!: Phil panics when immediately after Bykov announced that he would call to check whether they remain on their post during night shift, Gleb and Sophia rushes out to have sex, and Bykov actually calls the instant they exits.
  • The Paranoiac: Semyon. He is rude, he is loud, and he is very stubborn in calling everyone around him "thieves" because he believes that his misplaced phone was actually stolen.
    • When he notices that his phone is gone, he doesn't even try to find it, and instead immediately accuses his patient of thievery. Note that his phone is very old and cheap, even by Russian standards, making it questionable why anyone would even bother to steal it.
    • When he gives up on trying to catch the "thief" (in fact, Semyon himself sent him to do X-Ray, but promptly forgot about it) and goes to buy a new phone as Olga suggested, he accuses the shopkeeper of "selling stolen phones" (specifically, his phone!) just because he notices vaguely similar phone, judging by "familiar" cracks (completely ignoring all shopkeeper's arguments, who states that since he sells second-hand phones, nearly all of them have such defects), and only gets prevented from going close and personal with him by the glass case. Then he calls police to check shopkeeper's documents, and insists that he must be a thief even after being told that he is innocent. When the cop dismisses this as paranoia, Semyon accuses him of being a part of this "scheme", and proceeds to insulting him and his job, to cop's irritation.
    • When patient returns, Semyon forces him, shopkeeper and the cop to go with him to the cop's boss, to continue conflict there. Even when his phone gets found (by Olga) and he gets forced to take back his statement, instead of apologising, he continues insulting all four, trying to make it look like he just gave up on a hopeless case. Unfortunately for him, they overheard everything due to a phone being too loud, forcing Semyon to quietly mumble "sorry" and rush out.
    • When he notices that Olga, Gennadiy and two other people are sitting, talking and laughing at something, he immediately assumes that Olga has told them about this incident with a phone and calls her out on this, in rather rude form. While (when he leaves) Olga confirms that yes, they laughed at this story, she still feels annoyed, because he always expects the worst from people.
