Recap / The Interns S 11 E 12

Go To

Olga's replacement decides to quit, and Kisegach invites Olga to return to her old position. Semyon insists that she must stay at home, with their daughter — only for Olga to accuse him of disliking the prospect of them once again working together, forcing him to back down. As he later admits to Gleb, the real reason for his negative reaction was fear that Olga would take away what little freedom he has on his workplace — and that he is tired of always being supervised. Gleb suggests him to learn more about why the other accountant wants to leave, and try to prevent it (meaning that Olga would have no way to return). Semyon tries to do so by asking Lyuba. He learns little — except for the fact that she's completely lone (she doesn't even have a cat!), and comes up with a plan how to exploit this: what else, besides love, can force a lone woman to change her mind and not quit her job? He and Gleb would invent an "anonymous suitor", to bait her interest; at the very least, it would buy them some time to come up with another plan. But Gleb refuses to participate in this, so Semyon proceed without him. The plan seemingly works well — in fact, a little too well, since now she tries to learn as much as possible from Semyon (who expected that everything would work on its own, without further involvement from him), forcing Lobanov to invent new details on the go. Semyon has no other option than to lie that this suitor is Gleb, after which he forces Gleb to play along, despite Gleb stating his disliking of the plan right from the start. Accountant decides to talk with Gleb, but when she sees him with Sophia, she realises that Lobanov lied. In attempt to salvage the situation, Semyon tries to switch her attention to Phil; Phil reacts negatively to the plan, but reluctantly agrees to play along — only to flirt with the wrong woman, as Semyon never bothered to show him how their accountant even looks like, and then get busted by said accountant. The accountant then confronts Semyon — she just realised that all this time, that "anonymous suitor" was him. Unfortunately, they can't be together — Semyon is married, and she can't allow him to just ruin his marriage like this. And before he has a chance to explain, he realises that Olga is here and can hear them! Semyon barely manages to explain the situation to Olga, but now it seems that her returning to the old job is inevitable, whether he likes it or not.

Alexei is late to work, and since Bykov is too busy with his new game to even bother, he just orders him to take bixesnote  and bring them to Kisegach. Bykov realises too late that he meant to say "to Lyuba", but decides to not attempt to correct Alexei, thinking that he would "realise by himself". Alexei doesn't, and just delivers them to Kisegach. Irritated by Alexei not even bothering to double-check blatantly meaningless order (which means that he can't think for himself, and thus, isn't good doctor material), Bykov decides to teach him doubting. Firstly, he orders him to give his patient some pills without explaining what they're supposed to do, then asks what he just did. When Alexei tries to defend himself with "you just ordered me" excuse, Bykov points out that it's Alexei's patient, not Bykov's, and it's Lyosha's duty to know what happens to him. Alexei orders his patient to make a lavement, just to make sure... and then Bykov orders him to give the patient the same pills. When asked why, Bykov states that Alexei was supposed to ask Bykov about these pills right from the tart, not blindly trust him. Then the patient's test results turns out to be bad, and Alexei tries to ask Bykov. Bykov, irritated by him refusing to think for himself, provides him with three options what he may do — ECG, ultrasound or dropper — and report to Bykov once he makes a decision. Alexei fails to make a decision, and just does all three, and now patient (whom Lyosha never bothered to warn just why he needs all this) is on the brink of mental breakdown. Bykov gives Alexei the last chance: he must defuse the situation, with one option being "sedatives", and other being "mustard plasters"; one would help the patient, the other is blatantly unrelated to the problem, and Alexei is not allowed to pick both. Alexei still fails to see his point, and, after sedating the patient, tries to give the patient mustard plasters...

Kisegach tries to analyse just what secret message Bykov could possibly sent to her via the bixes, which Lyosha brought to her on his orders, and their content. She remembers their conversation about Kisegach's mother visiting them (or them visiting her) to let Marina see Ilya, and starts thinking whether it's Bykov's way to give her answer — but if it is, then is it "yes" or is it "no"? She asks Kupitman, who "confirms" that this is some kind of secret message, and even has a version what it was supposed to mean: Bykov grew bored of "normal" sex, and wants something new. They tries to come up with something else, but Kisegach rejects all Kupitman's ideas as being beyond ridiculous. Kupitman decides to go and find out more by himself. While he fails to find anything, Kisegach finds the "answer" by herself: Bykov hints on wanting a new bike! They decides to confront Bykov about this before it's too late... only for Bykov to find her "theory" (and attempt to make a mini-bike from bixes) being very funny.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, it's easy to interpret Semyon's reaction to Olga returning to her job as him just being opposed to her working, in general, especially considering his comment about Kisegach, but in reality he just fears that, with Olga always watching over him, he would lose what little freedom he has left (which also would cause major stress for him).
  • The Bus Came Back: After spending full tenth season and half of eleventh one offscreen, Olga finally returns to continue working as the hospital's accountant.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Lobanov's attempt to make accountant believe that she has a new anonymous suitor works too well, forcing Semyon to just point her to Gleb, and then to Phil. Ultimately, she just starts believing that said "suitor" is Semyon himself. And then Olga busts them when accountant explains to Semyon why they can't be together!
  • Didn't Think This Through: Semyon's plan was doomed right from the beginning, because he failed to take into account several crucial details:
    • Passing Gleb as anonymous suitor for new accountant? Gleb is in relationship with Sophia (who isn't in the plan), and isn't exactly motivated to even bother playing along (Lobanov just forced him), so this legend gets ruined the instant the accountant busts them together.
    • Passing Phil as anonymous suitor? Phil agrees to play his part, but was never warned how this girl is even looks like, so he starts flirting with a wrong woman — and accountant actually busts them together!
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: According to Lyuba, it's Bykov's fault that interns don't doubt his orders; they're too broken by Bykov's methods, which better suits to train unwilling slaves, not thinking doctors. Bykov ignores her.
  • I Don't Pay You to Think: Inverted. While Bykov actually dislikes Alexei's blind obedience, considering it being detrimental to Lyosha'd duties as doctor, Alexei acts like this is how things should go, always expecting that Bykov would provide him with correct instructions for any situation (which raises question, why even keep Alexei around if he can't do anything without being supervised by Bykov). Lyuba attributes it to interns being suppressed into total compliance, but Alexei tends to act like this in general, not only on duty. So, the rest of their plot involves Bykov trying to force Alexei into realising that Bykov actually does pay him to think.
    • Bykov orders Alexei to deliver some bixes to Kisegach (he made a mistake: he meant to say "Lyuba" instead), but Alexei didn't even bother to ask why. When Bykov learns that Lyuba never received them, he gets irritated by Alexei's lack of mind flexibility, and decides to "train" him.
    • When training starts, Bykov orders Lyosha to give his patient some strange pills, expecting that Alexei would at least ask "why?" or "what are they supposed to do?", because, you know, his patient is his responsibility. He doesn't, and Bykov asks him whether he's sure that this wouldn't turn out being a blatantly wrong suggestion. Alexei misses his point and interprets it as order to give the patient a lavement (to get rid of "wrong" pills), only to being ordered to give them again, this time with explanation what these pills are for. When asked why he then bothered with lavement, Bykov provides him with a predictable answer "because you are dumbass".
    • Alexei notices that his patient has weird test results, and asks Bykov what to do (which is against the rules). Irritated, Bykov provides him with three possible options (ECG, ultrasound and dropper), with Alexei choosing the last one. Then Bykov orders him to translate clinical history to Romanian; this time, Alexei at least bothers to ask "why?", which Bykov takes as a sign of progress. But, as it then turns out, Alexei "just in case" did the other two options, too. Bykov points out that the patient is now on the bring of mental breakdown due to all of this (Alexei also never bothered to explain to him anything), and provides him with two options, one being sedatives, and other being (blatantly unrelated to the case) mustard plasters, and even accents that he must chose only one of them. He still tries both (starting with sedatives, and then applying plasters)... It seems that some people never learn.
  • Love Letter Lunacy: Semyon's plan involves setting up something like this on purpose, by inventing "anonymous suitor" for their accountant, so she wouldn't quit her job and instead would stay to find out more about him (meaning that Olga wouldn't take this job for herself). This horribly backfires.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Semyon was so "subtle" in his plan to assure their accountant that she has a new anonymous suitor, that it resulted in her mistaking him for that suitor. Olga arrives "just in time" to bust her stating that they can't be together, because accountant doesn't want to harm Semyon's marriage. Considering the morning discussion (when Semyon asked Olga to not resume working here), it looks very ugly for Olga. Semyon only manages to defuse the situation by admitting real reason why he needs to keep Olga away from her old job (to which she reacts as well as he expected, but at least she believes him).
  • Morton's Fork: When Semyon reacts negatively to Olga returning to her old position of the hospital's accountant, Olga takes it as a sign of him reacting badly to them once again working together. This forces Semyon to either accept this interpretation — thus offending her; admit why he reacted badly to it (he fears that she would take away what little freedom he has left on his workplace, plus here he can have some "rest" from Olga), which opens whole new can of possible problems; or just submit to her. He choses the last one... but tries to manipulate a new accountant into staying on her job, which causes the whole mess to unfold.
  • No Name Given: Despite being important character for Semyon's plot, replacement accountant never gets called by name.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: When Semyon thanks Gleb on "agreeing" to play part in his plan and hugs him (so tight, Gleb can't go anywhere), Gleb tries to point out that he didn't, only to realise that Semyon wouldn't release him from his bear hug until he agrees.
  • Out of Focus: Except for brief appearance during Semyon's plot, Sophia has no role in this episode.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Bykov is too busy to pay attention to Alexei even when he punishes him, so he orders him to bring bixesnote  to Kisegach. He realises that he meant to say "Lyuba" (giving wrong address by mistake), but decides not to bother with correcting Alexei, thinking that he would realise by himself. Naturally, he doesn't, being "taught" to never questioning Bykov's orders and now Kisegach wonders what a new game Bykov just started. It only goes downhill from here.
    • Because Semyon never bothered to explain to Phil how the girl whom he's supposed to flirt with even looks like, Phil starts flirting with the other woman, ruining Semyon's legend when they gets busted.
